Ryback in 2012

Was Ryback ever slated to get a run with the WWE Championship in 2012? I was watching some of his work on the network from back then, and it really seems they missed the boat on him at that stage.
God no. The rushed Punk feud really exposed him. Although the continued burial afterwards, most notably the bizarre clean job to Mark Henry, was definitely no help either. But no, he was never in line to get the title at any point that I'm aware of.
