WWF Superstars – August 22nd, 1992

By Brian Bayless on November 2, 2018

August 22, 1992

From the Worcester Centrum in Worcester, MA

Your hosts are Vince McMahon and Mr. Perfect

This week’s featured match is Repo Man & Beverly Brothers vs. Jim Duggan & The Bushwhackers. Also in action are Nailz, Bret Hart, Razor Ramon, and Crush.

Repo Man & Beverly Brothers w/ The Genius vs. Jim Duggan & The Bushwhackers

The Repo Man & Beverlys attack from behind but are quickly foiled. We get a triple battering ram into the corner then Duggan & Bushwhackers clear the ring and march around. Perfect keeps teasing Vince about which corner he will be in at SummerSlam then Beau cheap shots Butch from the apron. The heels cut off the ring until Butch is able to fight back and tag out. Duggan beats on Repo Man in the corner then fights off the Beverly Brothers. The match breaks down as The Bushwhackers hit everyone with battering rams then Repo Man drags Duggan outside and that causes a distraction so Beau can hit Luke from behind with The Genius’s scroll and that gets the win (4:23) 1/4*.

Thoughts: Seeing how one team was not booked on SummerSlam it was clear who was going to win. Since saving the Bushwhackers last week from the Nasty Boys it seems that they are doing some sort of an alliance with Duggan and The Bushwhackers. And those three could still get some fan reactions but well past their primes and rightfully settling into the lower card.

WWF Update with Gene Okerlund. This focuses on the involvement of Mr. Perfect in the SummerSlam main event. We hear from the Ultimate Warrior as he says Perfect in your corner guarantees victory then asks Savage who will make the sacrifice before promising to leave SummerSlam as the champion. After that, we hear from Randy Savage as he says he will seek and destroy then become victorious at SummerSlam with the Macho Maniacs right behind him. The mind games from Perfect & Flair have worked brilliantly as they’ve pitted Warrior and Savage against each other. Like with Bret vs. Bulldog they found another way to create heat for a babyface vs. babyface program.

Papa Shango vs. Scott Taylor

Shango beats down Taylor as Vince talks about Warrior/Savage and how it could be one of the greatest matches ever then Shango uses a reverse shoulderbreaker for the win (0:46). After the match, Shango beats on Taylor with his stick, even breaking it over his back. Shango tosses referee Tim White outside and kicks the other ref outside but Bret Hart runs out and holds Shango from the apron in order for Taylor to escape. Vince tells us that Bret will be in action later on as he heads backstage.

Thoughts: Looks like we are getting a program between Shango and Bret after SummerSlam is finished.

We are shown a segment from “Prime Time Wrestling”where Jimmy Hart shows Gene Okerlund the contract for a match between the Nasty Boys and Ultimate Warrior & Randy Savage. Apparently Hart had an open contract for his team and chose to face Savage & Warrior. Okerlund cannot believe it while Hart is jumping for joy. This match is taking place at the “SummerSlam Spectacular” Prime Time special, which will happen the following day. They are now selling the special on seeing whether or not Savage and Warrior are capable of putting their differences aside to team up against the Nasty Boys. Since they are going against each other at the PPV I don’t know if there is a reason for them to get along, especially since they have no real beef with the Nasty Boys, but at least makes for an interesting dynamic to see if one of them will completely turn on each other.

Crush vs. Peter Motts

Although not announced this is in fact Motts (Perry Saturn) in job duty. The History of WWE lists him as “Jeff Daniels.” Crush overpowers Motts with ease and quickly puts him away with the head vice (1:37).

Thoughts: An easy win for Crush as he continues to get built up based on his size and ability.

Razor Ramon vs. Tony Roy

Razor beats down Roy as Vince talks about Warrior & Savage teaming up. Razor smacks Roy around and hits a super back suplex before the crucifix powerbomb gets the win (2:10).

Thoughts: Razor impresses yet again while the focus on commentary was about Warrior & Savage teaming up.

Bruce Hart promo from “Wrestling Challenge” airs.

Bret “The Hitman” Hart vs. Richie Rich

Bret takes control as we hear from Owen Hart in an insert promo saying while the family is divided he is still picking Bret to win at SummerSlam. Bret works Rich over as we see Papa Shango head out to ringside. Shango leaves the Bret puts on the Sharpshooter for the win (2:10).

Thoughts: We finally have Owen giving his opinion on the SummerSlam match as this is clearly the #2 most important match on the card.

SummerSlam Report with Gene Okerlund.

Vince plugs the “World Tour 1992” Coliseum Home Video release.

John Armstrong vs. Nailz

Nailz chokes out Armstrong in the corner to start. Nailz kicks Armstrong in the ribs and chokes him out again as Perfect says Big Bossman is nuts to want to face Nailz. We hear from Virgil in an insert promo as he tells Nailz that he’s “too legit to quit” then Nailz uses a chokehold for the win (1:52). After the match we see Nailz choke out Armstrong with the nightstick as Vince says Nailz does not belong in the WWF and probably does not even belong in society.

Thoughts: They tried to make us care about the Nailz vs. Virgil match but it’s not working well as the only interest there is in Nailz is against Bossman.

We hear from the Nasty Boys hyping up their match against Warrior & Savage. Also, on the SummerSlam Spectacular we will find out which corner Perfect will be in for SummerSlam. Vince closes by saying we will have highlights of the tag match next week on Superstars.

Final Thoughts: The main focus here was on the SummerSlam Spectacular, primarily about Savage & Warrior teaming up. They also threw in at the end that Perfect will reveal whose corner he’ll be in at the PPV. Besides that we got more SummerSlam hype as the show is just over one week away.
