WWF Superstars – August 1st, 1992

By Brian Bayless on October 30, 2018

August 1, 1992

From the Glens Falls Civic Center in Glens Falls, NY

Your hosts are Vince McMahon and Mr. Perfect

This week in action are Bret Hart, Papa Shango, Legion of Doom, and the Nasty Boys. Plus, an interview with The Undertaker and announcement of more SummerSlam matches.

Nasty Boys w/ Jimmy Hart vs. Kerry Davis & Ross Greenberg

The Nasty Boys beat on Greenberg as Vince talks about their feud against High Energy. Hart is on the outside telling us that the boys are back in town as his team now beats on Davis. Knobbs talks trash then the Nasty Boys put Davis away with the running powerslam/flying elbow drop combo (2:47).

Thoughts: The push to rebuild the Nasty Boys into something other than a lower card team continues as they continue to feud with High Energy as the talk about possibly being upset with Money Inc. on the backburner for now.

WWF Update with Gene Okerlund. This shows us last week’s face-to-face between Ultimate Warrior and Randy Savage with Ric Flair & Mr. Perfect coming out to interject themselves, leading to Savage attacking Flair and getting double-teamed until Warrior made the save then Savage and Warrior had to be separated.

Iron Mike Sharpe vs. Bret “The Hitman” Hart

Sharpe works the arm as the announcers talk about Bret facing British Bulldog at SummerSlam and how it is causing friction within their family. Bret fights back and hits an inverted atomic drop then we see Bret’s mom Helen in an insert promo and how this match is like a nightmare tearing the family apart. Bret stays in control then puts Sharpe away with a Sharpshooter (1:55).

Thoughts: Now we are really seeing the push of the family dynamic storyline for this match. And it will only intensify as we get closer to the PPV.

A plug for WBF Magazine featuring an article on host Cameo Kneuer.

“The Model” Rick Martel vs. Bill Pierce

Martel works the arm as Vince says this year’s SummerSlam is the “SummerSlam you’d never thought you’d see.” We hear from Martel in an insert promo as he promises to give Shawn Michaels everything to be jealous about as Vince wonders if Sherri will leave with Rick Martel at SummerSlam. Martel then hits an inverted atomic drop after blocking a monkey flip and soon after that uses a Boston Crab for the win (2:25).

Thoughts: Odd how Vince randomly mentioned the possibility of Sherri leaving Shawn, the man she is obsessed with for the most part, in order to be with Martel. Let’s see if that will happen.

We get an ad set to “London Bridge” to promote SummerSlam.

Gene Okerlund welcomes The Undertaker & Paul Bearer to the interview platform. Bearer tells Okerlund he cannot understand why Harvey Whippleman & Kimchee want Kamala to face Undertaker. After that, Undertaker assures Kamala that the maggots and worms will feast on his carcass after SummerSlam. A generic promo for a match that so far has little heat.

Papa Shango vs. Tony Roy

Perfect wonders if Shango could put a curse on Warrior to prevent him from coming to SummerSlam. Roy lands some shots but they do not have any effect. Vince wants to know what happens when Shango meets with Warrior as Shango slams Roy. We get talk about voodoo now on commentary then Shango uses a reverse shoulderbreaker for the win (2:02). After the match, Perfect wants to know if Heenan & Flair can join him in asking Shango to put a curse on Warrior.

Thoughts: They are having Perfect & Heenan mention the possibility of trying to persuade Shango to put another curse on Warrior in order to get Flair into the main event at SummerSlam. It makes sense from a storyline perspective but its clear the Shango character is clearly being phased down the card.

SummerSlam Report with Gene Okerlund. New matches announced are Natural Disasters vs. Beverly Brothers for the Tag Team Titles, Nailz vs. Virgil, and Legion of Doom vs. Money Inc. Those are not matches that cause any excitement.

Flex Armstrong & Richie Rich vs. Legion of Doom w/ Paul Ellering

The LoD toss around Rich as the camera shows Rocco with Vince acting like this is hilarious. Armstrong tags in and Hawk beats the crap out of him as Vince is still laughing like a dipshit over Rocco then LoD hit the Doomsday Device for the win (1:48).

Thoughts: The Rocco gimmick is so awful but that did not stop Vince in treating it like quality entertainment. I’m sure it was great to Vince but the LoD act has lost pretty much all of its luster between this and the crappy feud with the Beverly Brothers.

We now see Razor Ramon as he calls out the old men around them for living in the past and playing dominoes. Razor says no one cares where you come from, they care where you are going and he’s going to the very top of the WWF. Razor then calls out The Undertaker, Warrior, and Savage as he will knock down all the heroes like a stack of dominos. Another good promo from Razor as he is calling out the top faces and based on how many vignettes he is getting seems primed for a top spot soon.

Next week in action are Kamala, British Bulldog, Natural Disasters, and the debut of Razor Ramon. Plus, an interview with the Ultimate Warrior and more!

Final Thoughts: The push to SummerSlam continues with more matches announced and the previously announced matches all getting hype. With the PPV four weeks away expect more matches announced and other angles to build it up.
