WWF Wrestling Challenge – July 12th, 1992
By Brian Bayless on October 23, 2018
July 12, 1992
From the Ottawa Civic Center in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
Your hosts are Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan
This week in action are Ric Flair, Crush, El Matador, and High Energy. Plus, an interview with Papa Shango and more!
Ric Flair w/ Mr. Perfect vs. Jason Knight
Flair sends Knight to the mat with a back elbow smash. Flair stays in control as the camera shows Perfect nodding with approval. We then hear from Flair & Perfect in an insert promo telling Randy Savage its destiny for Flair to become champion again. Flair stays in control then puts Knight away with the figure four leg lock (1:41).
Thoughts: A boring squash match win for Flair to hype the cold World Title feud and to make matters worse the crowd did not react to Flair as a star.
WWF Special Report with Lord Alfred Hayes. This shows us the Randy Savage video tribute that already aired on Superstars.
Tony Ulysses & Nick Danger vs. Beverly Brothers w/ The Genius
The Genius’s promo was about how the “LOS” is going down as Gorilla says that Rocco will have something to say about that. The Beverly Brothers beat on Ulysses then do the same to Danger until they hit the Shaker Heights Spike for the win (2:02).
Thoughts: The LoD are pretty much needing a puppet to fight back against being called sissies by the Beverly Brothers. This storyline is so fucking bad.
WBF Bodystars ad.
Joe Milano vs. El Matador
The announcers talk about the wonders of ICOPRO and how every athlete in the world will be using it as Gorilla believes it will be prevalent into the next century. Matador works over Milano until he gets his eyes raked. Milano uses some terrible-looking strikes but Matador fights back. Matador hits a dropkick then the El Paso de Muerte gets the win (2:04).
Thoughts: This was mostly about shilling ICOPRO as some sort of revolutionary product.
“The Model” Rick Martel vs. Scott Colontonio
Martel beats on Colontonio then we hear from him in an insert promo warning Tatanka that if he comes seeking revenge he’ll go the way of the buffalo. Colontonio gets a nearfall with a sunset flip but Martel hits a slam then ducks a crossbody before the Boston Crab gets the win (1:59).
Thoughts: The Tatanka/Martel feud continues with boys guys now promising to make each other extinct.
Crush vs. Glen Ruth
Crush overpowers Ruth with ease then comes off of the top rope with a forearm smash. Crush stays in control then uses a head vice for the win (1:49).
Thoughts: They are still putting over Crush’s size and agility while playing up his vignettes about him loing to crush things as a child.
We get a montage of Papa Shango’s curses that leads to a vignette where we see Shango laughing as the Ultimate Warrior’s face is shown in the flame as he promises to end him once and for all. Good lord was this corny.
Dublin Destroyer vs. Bret “The Hitman” Hart
Heenan makes fun of Bret’s greasy hair and wonders how much cholesterol it contains. We hear from Shawn Michaels with Sherri in an insert promo saying nothing would look better than himself with the IC Title. Bret takes control of the Destroyer then uses the Sharpshooter for the win (2:02).
Thoughts: Basic hype for the Bret/Shawn feud which needs to involve more than insert promos.
Razor Ramon vignette from Superstars airs.
High Energy vs. Kerry Davis & Joe McMullen
The announcers talk about the High Energy/Nasty Boys feud. High Energy take control with Owen hitting a few different suplex variations. Gorilla plugs a “WWF Magazine” article on High Energy as Heenan mentions Luger’s return to WBF Bodystars then High Energy hit stereo missile dropkicks for the win (2:33).
Thoughts: They plugged the WBF and the lower card tag team feud here.
In action next week are Tatanka, Nailz, and Legion of Doom. Plus, an interview with Ric Flair and the SummerSlam main event announcement.
Final Thoughts: The big news is learning of the SummerSlam main event but the rest of this show was quite bad. The Shango segment was pathetic and these feuds puhsed on the feuds are all either stale, repetitive, or just plain terrible.
