WWF Wrestling Challenge – July 5th, 1992

By Brian Bayless on October 22, 2018

July 5, 1992

From the Ottawa Civic Center in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada

Your hosts are Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan

The Undertaker w/ Paul Bearer vs. Bob Knight

The Undertaker overpowers Knight as we hear from Berzerker & Mr. Fuji in an insert promo where Berzerker threatens to put his sword “upside” the Undertaker’s head. Undertaker stays in control then uses a tombstone for the win (2:12). After the match, The Undertaker puts Knight inside of a bodybag.

Thoughts: Typical squash match win from The Undertaker as his feud with The Berzerker continues.

WWF Special Report with Lord Alfred Hayes. We are shown from last week’s Superstars when the Legion of Doom & Paul Ellering find their doll Rocco among a pile of debris. Lord Alfred believes Rocco will be the inspiration they have been seeking out. I can only imagine a fan of the Road Warriors several years prior watching them here needing Ellering as a ventriloquist for inspiration.

JA Gooden vs. Kamala w/ Harvey Whippleman & Kimchee

Kamala beats down Gooden then knocks him down with a headbutt. The announcers talk about WBF Bodystars and the return of Lex Luger as Kamala chokes out Gooden. Heenan tells us that Luger injured his arm in a motorcycle accident as Gorilla calls that convenient happening right before the WBF Championship then Kamala uses a splash for the win (1:36).

Thoughts: My only takeaway from this was how they used a real-life accident, almost a tragic one, as a storyline to make us question whether or not Luger was afraid to do his special pose at the WBF Championship. Good lord.

Tatanka vs. Glen Ruth

Tatanka uses a flurry of offense then we hear from him in an insert promo as he promises to make Rick Martel extinct. Tatanka uses a delayed vertical suplex and hits a few chops before the Samoan Drop gets the win (2:42).

Thoughts: Tatanka’s new thing is now promising to make Martel extinct.

Nailz vs. Bruce Mitchell

The ref pats Nailz down like he is still in prison. That’s a nice touch I suppose. The announcers talk about the Big Bossman and when he will return as Heenan warns him to stay in Cobb County because Nailz will put him away forever. Nailz continues to beat down Mitchell then uses a choke hold for the win (1:20). After the match, Nailz attacks Mitchell with the nightstick then he chases off the medics who came down with a stretcher.

Thoughts: Nailz is still being presented as a monster but odd they are building up someone as a monster for a guy in Bossman who while talented hasn’t done shit since his feud with Mountie ended last Summer.

Money Inc. w/ Jimmy Hart vs. Rene Figuero & Phil Apollo

IRS tells the crowd he would double their taxes if Prime Minister. Money Inc. works over Figueroa to start then we hear from them in an insert promo telling the Natural Disasters to put their money where their mouths are as DiBiase cracks that even he might not have that much money. Gorilla rags on Money Inc. for how they retained the titles at WrestleMania as IRS puts Apollo away with the Write Off clothesline (2:37).

Thoughts: This feud is repetitive and uninteresting as it gets.

An ad for WBF Bodystars airs.

Gene Okerlund welcomes the Ultimate Warrior to the interview platform. He asks him about the curse put on him by Papa Shango. Warrior says he reaches out to the Warriors and will destroy Shango with the power of the Ultimate Warrior. Basic interview by Warrior for a feud that is not getting over. This was really rushed and in a way that makes you think Warrior will go on to do something else soon.

Jason Speed vs. Shawn Michaels w/ Sensational Sherri

The camera shows Shawn dancing and taking off his jacket while looking into the mirror. Shawn grounds Speed then tosses him outside as we hear from him in an insert promo vowing to become the Intercontinental Champion. Back inside, Shawn hits a super kick then the teardrop suplex for the win (1:37).

Thoughts: Besides the IC Title feud there was a running gag on commentary were Heenan was choking on something.

Gorilla shills the WBF Championship release on Coliseum Home Video while Heenan is still choking.

Razor Ramon vignette from Superstars airs.

British Bulldog vs. Brooklyn Brawler

Heenan’s choking has stopped. The announcers talk about the Repo Man trying to end Bulldog’s career. Bulldog works the arm then we hear from Repo Man in an insert promo saying he will turn Bulldog into a puppy when he puts his leash around Bulldog’s neck. Bulldog now works a chinlock then soon after that uses a running powerslam for the win (2:21).

Thoughts: Another horrible feud was being pushed here as this just needs to end ASAP with Bulldog going over strong.

Heenan lets us know that Shawn Michaels has left the building.

Next week in action are Koko B. Ware, Texas Tornado (He never ended up on the show and was fired by the time this aired I believe), Crush, and Ric Flair.

Final Thoughts: The only exclusive thing here was a brief, generic interview with Warrior. The rest of the show focused primarily on midcard feuds and lousy ones at that as the company continues to put out an inferior product.
