WWF Superstars – July 4th, 1992

By Brian Bayless on October 22, 2018

July 4, 1992

From the Copps Coliseum in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.

Your hosts are Vince McMahon and Mr. Perfect

In action this week are Bret Hart, Papa Shango, and Crush. Plus, an update on the Big Bossman and an interview with the Repo Man.

High Energy vs. Bob Bradley & Joe Milano

The announcers talk about High Energy facing the Nasty Boys. Owen works over Milano while showing off his agility. Bradley tags in and is hit with an atomic drop. The Nasty Boys are in an insert promo telling High Energy they are going to get “nasty-cized.” Jimmy Hart was not present for the promo. Milano is back in the match and Owen lifts him up so Koko can hit a missile dropkick then Owen uses a jackknife cover for the win (1:54).

Thoughts: The only thing notable here was Hart not being with the Nasty Boys for their insert promo and when you add that with last week’s talk about their possibly being jealousy between Money Inc. and the Nasty Boys its clear something will happen between these teams.

WWF Update with Gene Okerlund. We are shown photos of the Bossman’s attack at the hands of Nailz then the attack itself. After that, Okerlund conducts a phone interview as Bossman says he has lost weight and is physically weakened but on the road to recovery. Bossman says that he will return because he cannot let trash like Nailz takeover but does not know when he will return but its a lot sooner than Nailz thinks. We then end the segment with a closeup of Nailz hitting the nightstick in his hand while the music that played for Sid Justice’s introductory promos airs. More hype for this feud as they sell the beating Bossman suffered but talk about him coming back eventually to face Nailz.

“The Model” Rick Martel vs. Jason Knight

Vince laughs at the “Model is a Moron” sign in the crowd. Knight is in fact Jason of ECW fame. We hear from Martel in an insert promo telling Tatanka it was so easy to embarrass him and next time he lets it happen he’ll take more than just feathers. The announcers plug WBF Bodystars and the return of Lex Luger as Martel drops Knight with a back elbow smash. Knight tries to mount some offense but Martel blocks a monkey flip then Martel uses the Boston Crab for the win (2:21).

Thoughts: We got hype for the Martel/Tatanka feud and for the WBF.

An ad for the WWF Fan Club airs.

Crush vs. Kerry Davis

Crush overpowers Davis with ease as the announcers put over his agility. Crush hits a forearm smash from the top rope then uses a head vice to put Davis away (1:46).

Thoughts: Another win for Crush as they are trying to get him over by pushing his size and agility. Its certainly better than his crappy vignettes.

Papa Shango vs. Joe McMullen

Before the bell rings, McMullen starts clutching his knee as we are led to believe this is the result of Shango’s curse. Shango works over the knee and stays in control until using a reverse shoulderbreaker for the win (1:16).

Thoughts: More voodoo from Shango here as his push continues.

Sgt. Slaughter vs. Barry Hardy

Slaughter kicks Hardy while holding on to his wrist. Slaughter then uses a double stomp before the camel clutch gets the win as Vince wonders what will happen when Mountie and Slaughter face off (1:51)

Thoughts: The Slaughter and Mountie feud continues to get pushed but there is no heat for it at all.

Vince plugs the Coliseum Home Video release of the WBF Championship.

Gene Okerlund welcomes the Repo Man to the interview platform. Repo Man comes to the platform on a repossessed bike. Repo Man then tells British Bulldog he will not make it to SummerSlam and will lock him in the car on a hot Summer day with the windows up and if that doesn’t work he will get him “fixed.” The Repo Man’s delivery can be amusing at times but this interview was horrible and for a feud no one cares about.

Bret “The Hitman” Hart vs. Barry Horowitz

Bret hits an inverted atomic drop and a clothesline before we see him an insert promo telling Shawn Michaels it will take more than a high opinion if himself to become the Intercontinental champion. The announcers then talk about Sherri being a factor in that future match

Thoughts: More hype for the Bret/Shawn feud as they are now pushing how Sherri’s involvement might be too much for Bret to overcome.

We get another vignette of Razor Ramon at an outdoor market. Razor says he is like Adam in the Garden of Eden and how everyone wants to be like him then tells the “bambinos” to forget about school as to be like Razor, you take whatever you want. Razor then takes a piece of feud and asks the vendor if he has a problem but the poor guy is scared. Razor then tells anyone in the WWF who interferes in his mission then they will have a really big problem. Razor ends by spitting a piece of the fruit into the camera lens. Another great vignette from Razor. In a sea of terrible cartoon characters, Razor stands out as being fresh and edgy.

An ad for WBF Bodystars airs. The hype for the WBF remains relentless.

Beverly Brothers w/ The Genius vs. Scott Taylor & Phil Apollo

Vince runs down the WBF Bodystars episode that will air next week. The Beverly Brothers beat down Taylor as the announcers talk about the Legion of Doom reuniting with the doll known as Rocco. The Beverly Brothers stay in control before putting Taylor away with the Shaker Heights Spike (1:30). After the match, the Beverly Brothers paint “LOS” Across Taylor’s chest and then the Animal wig.

Thoughts: The future Scotty 2 Hotty gets humilated after the match as the LoD/Beverly Brothers feud continues.

Next week in action are Money Inc., Shawn Michaels, The Undertaker, Nailz, and the Legion of Doom.

Final Thoughts: Nothing much happened here on the holiday episode as the biggest segment was an interview with the Repo Man. The Razor vignettes are cool but the rest of the promotion continues to struggle.
