June 20, 1992
From the Rupp Arena in Lexington, KY
Your hosts are Vince McMahon and Mr. Perfect
This week in action are Papa Shango, Legion of Doom, The Undertaker, and Money Inc. Plus, an update on Ric Flair and more!
Legion of Doom w/ Paul Ellering vs. Tom Bennett & Barry Hardy
The LoD beat down their opponents right after the bell. They rough up Bennett now as the announcers talk about their feud against the Beverly Brothers. We then hear from the Beverly Brothers & The Genius in an insert promo as they say the LoD celebrate Mother’s Day on Father’s Day because they paint their face with makeup stolen from their mothers. Back to the match as LoD now beat on Hardy before putting him away with the Doomsday Device (1:42).
Thoughts: More hype for this tiresome LoD/Beverly Brothers feud. All we’ve seen is the Beverly Brothers taunt the LoD relentlessly while the LoD has not done anything about it at all.
WWF Update with Gene Okerlund. This shows us clips of his empty arena interview with Randy Savage that aired last week. After that we hear from Ric Flair & Mr. Perfect. They tell Savage he can say anything he wants but its Flair’s destiny to become champion again. The feud is now firmly about the title with Elizabeth completely removed from the picture.
Chris Hahn comes out for his match against Papa Shango. Vince says Shango has made a lot of believers out of many fans. Vince then talks about Warrior stepping up to Shango and spitting in his face to point out how he is a great competitor. Hahn finally steps into the ring as he is holding a towel in his hand. Hahn’s back turns away briefly then we see that hand which held the towel is now on fire. Hahn then runs away as Vince sells in a way that only he can do but it was not enough. These “curses” from Shango look anything but creepy due to how obvious the stunts are planned.
We now see that ICOPRO is sponsoring the Event Center segments, complete with a voiceover ad.
Sgt. Slaughter vs. Red Tyler
Slaughter beats on Tyler as Perfect sings another verse of Mountie’s theme song. We then hear from Mountie & Jimmy Hart in an insert promo as Mountie tells Slaughter to forget about Father’s Day because when they meet it will be the mother of all battles. Slaughter pulls up Tyler at two after a clothesline then uses the Cobra Clutch for the win as he calls out The Mountie (1:37).
Thoughts: The Mountie/Slaughter feud continues.
Vince plugs the newest edition of “WBF Magazine” with an article titled “Life After Steroids” as Vince puts it over as must-read stuff for all inspiring athletes. The WWF going hard in pushing an anti-steroid stance.
Repo Man vs. Brian Costello
Repo Man beats on Costello then pokes him in the eye. Vince says that soon the British Bulldog will be all over the Repo Man as we hear from Bulldog in an insert promo saying he is coming for revenge. Repo Man stays in control until he puts Costello away with a single leg crab (1:45).
Thoughts: With Bulldog’s suspension over expect him back on TV soon so this feud can continue.
Crush vs. Brooklyn Brawler
Vince puts over Crush’s appearance on “WBF Bodystars” and teases Perfect about host Cameo Kneuer being smitten with Crush. Perfect has a running gag about Cameo being in love with him. Vince then tells Perfect that his dad was an all-time great wrestler and refers to him as “The Ax.” Crush stays in control the puts Brawler away with a head vice as Vince gushes over his ability (1:56).
Thoughts: They continue to push Crush’s size and agility, which was smart, but he still has an incredibly lame character despite a good look.
Gene Okerlund welcomes Shawn Michaels & Sensational Sherri to the interview platform. Sherri comes out with the mirror and ask who is the “sexiest man in the land” as Shawn looks into the mirror. Okerlund calls out Shawn for being vain but Shawn keeps putting over his looks as the back of his vest reads “I’m Too Sexy For This Crowd.” Shawn then says besides being the sexiest and hottest man in the WWF, he also looks into the mirror and sees the next Intercontinental Champion. Okerlund asks Shawn about Bret Hart and having the opportunity to become champion and should worry about that but Shawn laughs at the notion of worrying about Bret and that next he will see his own reflection in the Intercontinental Title. Shawn now says in the interest of his own personal safety, claiming ladies are jumping the railing to come after him, he should leave the building. But first, Shawn looks into the mirror and says “Here’s looking at you, kid.” Shawn amped up his character here and I thought he did a good job even if the segment itself felt too long. Sure, it was over-the-top but so was his character at this time. And odd how Sherri is now reduced to holding a mirror during his interviews, which I guess is a sign that they are more confident in Shawn to let loose on his own during his mic time.
We get another vignette of Razor Ramon. He is in Miami, FL and pulls up in his custom Cadillac complete with fur seats and dice in the mirror. Razor says that 90 miles away they are living like pigs and in squalor while being told what to do but no one tells him what to do and that he’s coming to the WWF. Razor says no one will tell him what to do in the WWF and refers to himself as “El Jefe” Razor Ramon before tossing his toothpick into the camera. After that airs, Perfect says he seems like a pretty cool dude. These vignettes have been awesome and much better than most of the ’92 vignettes we have seen. Hall is doing wonderful with the character and in a company with loads of terrible gimmicks, this is quite refreshing.
Duane Gill vs. The Undertaker w/ Paul Bearer
Perfect talks about Undertaker will be staying down after The Berzerker uses his sword but Vince says Undertaker is supernatural. Undertaker hits a chokeslam and follows with the ropewalk attack. Undertaker then hits a clothesline before the tombstone gets the win (2:05). After the match, Gill is stuffed into a bodybag.
Thoughts: Basic hype for the Undertaker/Berzerker feud.
We now get highlights of the WBF Championship PPV. We see it will be available on Coliseum Home Video on July 2nd. We are shown a clip of Lex Luger recuperating in the hospital (they never mentioned what happened) before we get highlights of this bodybuilding PPV and all its wacky poses and themes. Gary Strydom retained the title.
Howard Finkel informs us that Shawn Michaels has left the building.
Rock Werner & Butler Stevens vs. Money Inc. w/ Jimmy Hart
Before the match, IRS tells the tax cheats in the crowd to pay up and pull the country out of this recession. After a few fans are shown chanting “Irwin,” DiBiase works over Butler. Money Inc. & Hart are shown in an insert promo tossing around money then IRS uses a clothesline on Werner for the win (1:42).
Thoughts: Not much mention of the Money Inc./Natural Disasters feud as that is a sign the feud is winding down.
Next week in action are Tatanka, Kamala, British Bulldog, Nailz, and Virgil. Plus, another vignette of Razor Ramon.
Final Thoughts: Not a whole lot of newsworthy stuff on this show, which is usually the case when its the last show of a TV taping cycle. They showcased edgier gimmicks like Shawn and Razor and now the Savage/Flair feud is all about the title instead of Elizabeth.
