WWF Wrestling Challenge – May 3rd, 1992
By Brian Bayless on October 8, 2018
May 3, 1992
From the Sports Arena in Toledo, OH
Your hosts are Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan
This week’s featured match is British Bulldog vs. Repo Man. Also in action are the Legion of Doom and Ric Flair plus an interview with Shawn Michaels & Sensational Sherri.
Legion of Doom w/ Paul Ellering vs. Tom Stone & Eric Freedom
Hawk catches Stone with a powerslam then hits a big boot. Freedom is in now and Hawk press slams him on top of Animal’s knee. We hear from the Beverly Brothers & The Genius in an insert promo as they call the LoD & Ellering the biggest sissies in the WWF. The LoD stay in control then put Freedom away with the Doomsday Device (2:10).
Thoughts: More of the Beverly Brothers & Genius calling the LoD sissies. Its not getting any heat.
An ad on how to join the WWF Fan Club airs.
WWF Special Report with Lord Alfred Hayes. Same as Superstars about UT/Berzerker angle.
Col. Mustafa vs. George Anderson
We get some USA chants from the crowd. Mustafa stomps Anderson as Gorilla taunts Heenan for Flair losing the WWF Title. Mustafa hits a few different suplex variations then uses the Camel’s Clutch for the win (1:57). After the match, Mustafa tosses Anderson outside.
Thoughts: This was Mustafa’s final match of this run and last appearance until the WM X-7 Gimmick Battle Royal. He had nothing to offer at this point of his career.
The announcers plug “WBF Magazine” featuring an article on how to improve your golf game. That sounds fucking tremendous.
Crush backstage promo airs.
Ric Flair w/ Mr. Perfect vs. Jim Powers
Heenan goes off on commentary about Flair’s photos of Elizabeth being real. Flair grounds Powers as Heenan tells us that Cameo from WBF Bodystars is in love with Mr. Perfect. Powers fights back and lands a few punches but gets tossed outside. Perfect takes out a foreign object from his pants and decks Powers then rolls him inside where Flair uses the figure four and gets the win (2:27).
Thoughts: Was it really necessary for Flair to get a cheap win over Jim Powers? Like, you couldnt just have Flair beat the guy clean being that he is the #1 challenger for the World Title. Anyway, the Flair/Savage feud is becoming more contrived with each passing week.
Natural Disasters vs. Brooklyn Brawler & Warren Bianchi
Brawler bounces off of Typhoon a few times then we hear from Money Inc. & Jimmy Hart as they taunt the Disasters. Typhoon suplexes Bianchi then Earthquake tags in and maintains control until the Disasters hit a pair of splashes for the win (3:09).
Thoughts: The Disasters are still not over and this Tag Title feud has been dreadful.
An ad for WBF Bodystars airs.
Gene Okerlund welcomes Shawn Michaels & Sensational Sherri to the interview platform. Okerlund asks Shawn about his future Intercontinental Title shot against Bret Hart. Shawn says he has what everyone is looking for and cannot believe people are calling him “conceited.” Shawn then says never confuse conceit with confidence and that he has the most confidence as Sherri fawns all over her man. Shawn says its fact he has more wrestling ability than anyone in the WWF and as the “night gets longer, he gets stronger.” Sherri then says Shawn will soon be champion and warns Bret what he faced at WrestleMania will be small compared to what Shawn will do to him. Sherri then puts over Shawn and warns the girls to keep their hands off then Shawn tells Bret to take a good look at the wrestler of the 90’s. Solid promo here as with Sid now gone Shawn is currently the most interesting heel on the roster. He stands out more than the goofy gimmicks and its a fresher act.
El Matador vs. Barry Horowitz
Heenan says Matador’s theme makes him want to put on gold-pointed shoes and stomp on roaches. Matador takes control early then quickly puts Horowitz away with the El Paso de Muerte (1:39).
Thoughts: Matador gets a win as this was a backdrop for Heenan to make more ethnic jokes I guess.
Repo Man vs. British Bulldog
Heenan talks about Repo Man hating dogs and why anyone would want to own a dog in the first place. Bulldog fires away then kicks Repo Man in the face. Repo Man bails then returns but Bulldog stays in control. Bulldog accidentally knocks out the ref while he has Repo Man over his shoulders then Repo Man beats on Bulldog with his grappling hook. Repo Man now chokes out Bulldog with his rope then hangs him over the top rope as the crowd barely reacts. Several agents run out and stop Repo Man then the ref finally wakes up and calls for the DQ (4:00) DUD.
Thoughts: The action was terrible and half of the match took place while the ref was out. Feuding with the Repo Man is not exactly a plus for Bulldog but then again the heel side of the roster has been decimated.
Gorilla tells us that preliminary reports are that Bulldog is okay.
Next week’s featured match is Ted DiBiase vs. Earthquake as we hear from both men.
Final Thoughts: The big angle revolved around the Repo Man so that tells you how exciting things are on Challenge. The build to WrestleMania VIII was great but the fallout has been anything but as the company is trying to find its way amid recent scandals and talent departures.
