WWF Superstars – May 2nd, 1992
By Brian Bayless on October 8, 2018
My WWF reviews are back, folks. Since I had a lot of them written up already ( I go back and fill in the “thoughts” stuff later) I’ll be posting a review of Superstars and Challenge daily for the next week or two.
May 2, 1992
From Wings Stadium in Kalamazoo, MI
Your hosts are Vince McMahon and Mr. Perfect
This week’s featured match is Skinner vs. Ultimate Warrior. Also in action are Money Inc., Big Bossman, and the debut of High Energy.
Big Bossman vs. Mark Roberts
Bossman drops Roberts with a back elbow smash then we hear from him in an insert promo telling the convict he is not afraid of any man then promises he will be ready. Bossman drops Roberts with an uppercut as Vince tells us this convict will get released next week. Vince denies Bossman abused any prisoners then Bossman puts Roberts away with a sidewalk slam (1:54).
Thoughts: The debut of this convict will soon be upon us as this storyline will get a lot more play going forward.
WWF Update with Gene Okerlund. We are shown last week when Berzerker nearly stabbed The Undertaker with his sword. After that, Berzerker & Fuji say they proved that Undertaker his human. We then hear from Undertaker & Paul Bearer as Undertaker asks Berzerker & Fuji if they expected the reaper after knocking at the devil’s door then tells them to rest in peace. They are building up to another Undertaker/Berzerker match as this feud seems official.
Red Tyler vs. Papa Shango
We get more cuts to the crowd as they appear shocked and scared at Shango’s appearance. Shango is shown in an insert promo laughing and saying “raise the dead, the river is red.” Shango beats down Tyler then hits a slam and a leg drop before using a shoulder breaker for the win (1:49). Vince says that Shango is even a threat to the Ultimate Warrior.
Thoughts: With Vince implying that Shango is a threat Warrior its even clearer that a feud between the two will happen.
We see a new set for the Event Center. Its more modern anyway and the intro kinda resembles SNL Weekend Update.
Tatanka vs. Brian Costello
Tatanka follows Costello outside and hits a few chops. They head back inside as Vince says people are saying that Tatanka had luck on his side at WrestleMania and that Martel wants a rematch. Tatanka suplexes Costello back inside then we hear from Martel in an insert promo telling us that “Indian” smells so bad he will have to spray an extra dose of Arrogance in the ring. Tatanka then hits Costello with a flying chop before a Samoan Drop gets the win (2:23). After the match, Martel heads out and tells Tatanka he smells then proceeds to spray Arrogance everywhere. Tatanka pushes Martel from behind off of the apron and that angers Martel, who tells Tatanka to do that to his face. Tatanka slowly gets on the apron and yells but flies off and gets Arrogance sprayed in his eyes. Martel then laughs about Tatanka now smelling good then sprays more Arrogance. Martel then takes Tatanka’s eagle feathers and sprays them too as Vince is telling us they belonged to Tatanka’s grandfather. Martel then puts it on his hair and says he started a new title then heads up the aisle. A few road agents head out to help Tatanka backstage.
Thoughts: I really thought Martel did a good job in this segment. He played his character well. They are trying to heat this feud up.
Backstage, we see trainers putting drops into Tatanka’s eyes.
Money Inc. w/ Jimmy Hart vs. Ron Cumberledge & Chris Hahn
Before the match, IRS tells the crowd to pay their taxes because DiBiase is sick of supporting everyone. Money Inc. beats on Cumberledge in the corner as the announcers talk about the Money Inc. vs. Natural Disasters feud. Money Inc. stays in control then IRS puts Hahn away with a clothesline (1:56).
Thoughts: The Money Inc. is just not any good. The crowd does not care and there is little chemistry between DiBiase & IRS in the ring.
An ad for the WrestleMania VIII Coliseum Home Video release as they show the end of the Flair vs. Savage match.
Okerlund welcomes Randy Savage to the interview platform. After congratulating Savage on his title win and by winning Elizabeth’s honor, Okerlund talks about the win possibly being tainted. Savage says its the 90’s and that he had to do whatever it took because Flair would have done anything to him. Okerlund asks about those thinking he stole the title as Savage says he did not and the only thing stolen was the kiss Flair stole from Elizabeth. Savage then tells Flair he now has the kiss of death and how its the first time that the champion issues the challenge. They are really reaching in how they are continuing this feud and why even bother now that Savage is the champ.
We get a vignette of Crush as he’s in a junkyard. Crush talks about loving baseball as a kid as we see a video of him crushing a baseball but says that now he is in the WWF there will be no more games. There was no point to this vignette.
Tom Bennett & Duane Gill vs. High Energy
High Energy are Koko B. Ware & Owen Hart. Koko is wearing his birdman gear. The camera shows two large women in the crowd dancing as Perfect asks Vince if they came here with him. Owen works the arm of Gill as we hear High Energy issuing a warning to the rest of the teams in the WWF. High Energy stays in control then hit stereo missile dropkicks for the win (2:10).
Thoughts: A lower card tag team cutting generic babyface promos is not a role you want as a performer. It just means you will be putting over all the other teams.
An ad for the next WBF Championship, which takes place on June 13th.
Skinner vs. Ultimate Warrior
Skinner spits in Warrior’s face but ends up getting slammed twice. Warrior tosses Skinner into the corner then hammers away. Warrior tosses Skinner outside then poses to the fans before heading out with a clothesline. Warrior brings the action back inside and hits another clothesline then hits a flying shoulder tackle/splash combo for the win (1:38). Vince says that Sid Justice is looking on and wonders what will happen when they face off. Warrior poses to the fans.
Thoughts: An easy win for Warrior to establish that he is back but this feud with Sid would not happen because Sid had quit by the time this aired.
Next week’s featured match is Ric Flair vs. Sgt. Slaughter as we hear comments from both men.
Final Thoughts: Warrior had his first TV match since last Summer and we saw an angle for the Martel/Tatanka feud. Plus, we got another crappy vignette for Crush. The real problem though is that Sid quit and the title feud is lacking heat and the roster depth is shallow. Sid quit after the 4/26 Boston Garden show after his match against the Ultimate Warrior where he lost by DQ. Sid said that the house drew a poor crowd and he was told by the agents that Warrior would kick out of his powerbomb Sid said he would do that but then he’d quit after the match because he was pissed about his move not being protected and sick of the “lies” told to him by Vince McMahon. I’ll go more into Sid’s departure tomorrow.
