Shawn Michaels WCW 1997 What If

By Scott Keith on October 6, 2018

So since the issue of "What if Shawn Michaels defected to WCW in 1997" has come up a lot in the recent month, I have a question about that. If Shawn did defect, what would have happen?

1. Stuck in the NWO hell as a fourth string member of the NWO, completely neutered and forced to play clown to Hall, Nash, Waltman and be treated by Hogan, the same way Tazz was treated by Austin during the Invasion (IE bullied and mocked and treated like a slave)?

2. WCW super rushes the blow-off to the NWO storyline (going so far as to have Sting Vs Hogan take place on Nitro), so they can have Shawn stroll in to immediately seize control over the NWO from Hogan, who then goes babyface again and feuds with the now led by Michaels NWO?

3. Michaels comes in and becomes the top babyface, effectively killing Sting's career dead as he's treated as an afterthought and you get Michaels as the one who defeats Hogan and the NWO at Starcade? Perhaps run with the angle that Michaels explicitly opposes the NWO on the basis of the view that Hogan explicitly neutered Hall and Nash and turned them into his flunkies and Michaels seeing that as the greater crime than Hogan being evil?

4. Does Michaels end up debuting with minor fanfare, before ending up like Raven: stuck in mid-card as a heel, fighting Benoit, Jericho, Malenko, and DDP and isolated from the NWO because Hogan not wanting him near the group and Hall and Nash pretty much telling Shawn "you're on your own" politically backstage?

Also, as for WWF; with Shawn gone, there is no need to get rid of Brett Hart. Which makes me wonder: does the Austin gravy train even take off? I doubt Brett would pass up the chance to solidify his standing as champion with Shawn gone; which makes me wonder if he would drop the belt to Austin at WM 1998. In this case, does Vince convince Brett to drop the belt to Kane and Kane does the job to Austin in 1998? Kane and Austin eventually DO cross swords; would Austin's rise be harmed if he gets dragged into the Undertaker/Kane feud earlier?

Similarly, what happens with Rock, Mankind, and HHH? Do they pair Rock and Mankind together sooner? Does Triple H become "The Corporate Champion" under the guise of Vince selecting HHH as his avatar as well? Do we get Brett and Owen as a tag team vs the New Age Outlaws, who remain a third party heel team going after legends?

Real talk, I feel like what would have legit happened is that Shawn would have gone there and hung with the nWo a bit and then he would have overdosed and died. I'm 100% sure that he would not have made it to the Invasion if he had left the WWF in 1997 like he was threatening.

As for the WWF side, the Austin train was comin' no matter who was on top. Bret was seemingly ready to step aside willingly for it, but D-X was also a big factor in things taking off around Austin like they did. So I dunno, Montreal was kind of a perfect storm of crazy circumstances, like the Flash getting hit with a lightning bolt in a shower of chemicals to gain super-speed, and I don't know that any other outcome would have left the business in the same form as we got.
