Let The Malenko Hit The Floor
By Scott Keith on September 29, 2018
Hi Scott.
So, Souled Out 2000. Opening match, Catch as Catch Can Rules, Billy Kidman vs Dean Malenko. You can win by pinfall, submission or your opponent touching the floor outside. As you said yourself in your rant for this event, it was a stupid rule for a match that didn't need any gimmicks.
We know the story, Malenko rolls out, Kidman wins.
Is there an official or mostly understood line as to what the hell had happened? Did Malenko seriously forget the stipulation and make a genuine mistake? Was it one last moment of defiance from Dean before he jumped to the WWF? Or, and remember, this is year 2000 WCW we're talking about, was it actually booked to end that way?
Or is this just going to end up in the same pile as who drove the Hummer, we'll never know the answer? Malenko himself answered the question shortly after: It was a complete brainfart on his part and he just instinctively rolled out as a typical heel move.
