WWF Wrestling Challenge – April 12th, 1992
By Brian Bayless on September 17, 2018
So, I went on vacation last week and my plan was to finish up the “thoughts” sections of my recaps because I did everything else but that never got to take place so expect a lot more reviews over the next several days because I am back.
April 12, 1992
From the Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, MS
Your hosts are Vince McMahon and Bobby Heenan
Same clips from WrestleMania VIII that were shown on Superstars.
John Allen vs. British Bulldog
Bulldog takes Allen over with a corner as Heenan tells Vince Elizabeth asked Flair to kiss him. Bulldog then hits a delayed vertical suplex as Vince tells Heenan the photographs of Flair & Elizabeth are false as Bulldog hits a running powerslam for the win (1:22).
Thoughts: More hype for the Savage/Flair feud.
Jake Roberts vs. Jim Powers from the Road to WrestleMania VIII special airs. Jake had quit at the PPV itself.
Tatanka vs. Brad Avery
Heenan screams “hit the deck…indians!” when hearing Tatanka’s theme. Tatanka chants and hits a pair of hip tosses. Tatanka dances around as Heenan says its gonna rain then Flair assures Vince everything is great with Flair. Tatanka hits a few chops and puts Avery away with a Samoan Drop.
Thoughts: Besides more talk about Flair/Savage we got some casual racism from Heenan. No mention of Tatanka’s feud with Martel.
WBF ad Airs.
El Matador vs. Bob Morgan
Morgan complains to the ref as Vince says Matador is one of only two wrestlers that have appeared at every WrestleMania and debates with Heenan whether or not he will make it to next year’s show. Well, he got a dark match win over Papa Shango on that show. Matador works a side headlock as the announcers talk about the Ulitmate Warrior’s return. Matador stays in control then hits the El Paso de Muerte (1:45).
Thoughts: This was mostly focused on the return of the Ultimate Warrior.
WWF Special Report with Lord Alfred Hayes. Same as the “Update” segment from Superstars that focused on what took place after the Flair vs. Savage match at WrestleMania.
Koko B. Ware & Ian Weston vs. Beverly Brothers w/ The Genius
Ware & Weston get an entrance as Vince tells us that Koko is back. And saddled with an enhancement talent partner. The Beverly Brothers now have theme music. The announcers talk about Paul Ellering coming back to manage the Legion of Doom as Blake mocks Koko while taking control. Koko fights back then tags out but the Beverly Brothers beat on Weston then put him away with the Shaker Heights Spike (2:00).
Thoughts: Just the day prior on Superstars Vince talked about Koko & Owen teaming up and now we see Koko return and paired up with a no-name enhancement talent losing in two minutes. Goes to show you what the company thought of the Koko & Owen team. The Beverly Brothers vs. LoD are now the #2 tag feud in the company.
Same vignette of Nailz from Superstars airs.
Gene Okerlund welcomes Big Bossman to the interview platform. Okerlund asks us about this individual we keep hearing from. Bossman says this convict without a name but rather a number wants to blame someone else and says if you can’t do the time then don’t do the crime. Bossman then wants this convict to look at the crowd and see that they believe in justice as the camera shows a cop. Bossman tells the convict he will put him back in prison. Bossman is acknowledging the man as “convict” and Dave Meltzer reported that was in fact going to be the name but it would be changed.
Scott Allen vs. Papa Shango
Vince tells us that Gorilla Monsoon will return next week. He then teases Heenan about being a victim of a voodoo curse. Shango beats down Allen then drops an elbow. Shango stays in control then hits a reverse shoulder breaker for the win (1:37). After the match, Shango puts a curse on Allen.
Thoughts: They are still putting over the voodoo aspect of Shango’s character.
Repo Man vs. David Taylor
This is not the Taylor from England. Repo Man stomps on Taylor then yells at him to start paying up. Taylor is standing on the apron then Repo Man yanks him off as Taylor splats on the floor then Repo Man rolls Taylor back inside for the win (1:57). After the match, Repo Man leaves.
Thoughts: Repo Man is without a feud at the moment I guess since there was no mention of his electrifying program against Virgil.
Next week, Bret Hart will be in action plus an interview with the Ultimate Warrior.
Final Thoughts: This show really just highlighted the WrestleMania fallout more than anything else. In the coming weeks we will continue to build towards the Summer feuds.
