WWF Prime Time Wrestling – March 16th, 1992
By Brian Bayless on August 24, 2018
March 16, 1992
Vince McMahon is your host. Panelists include Bobby Heenan, Mr. Perfect, Gorilla Monsoon, and Reverend Slick
Matches are Jimmy Snuka vs. Repo Man, British Bulldog vs. Shawn Michaels, The Undertaker vs. Col Mustafa, and Tatanka vs. Warlord
The panel talks about the Ric Flair & Elizabeth photos. Heenan says that Randy Savage is lying and the photos prove the relationship took place.
Natural Disaters defeat Jim Cooper & Paul Simpson in a match first shown on the 3/14 edition of “Superstars of Wrestling.”
Big Bossman vs. Lee Armstrong
This match also aired on the 3/22 edition of “Wrestling Challenge.” We get Gorilla Monsoon and Lord Alfred on commentary this week. Bossman beats on Armstrong as Gorilla talks about Sid Justice being “schizophrenic” and a ticking time bomb. Bossman stays in control then hits a sidewalk slam for the win (1:50).
Thoughts: Just a backdrop for the announcers to talk about Sid Justice, which goes to show you how badly the IRS feud cooled off Bossman.
WWF Update from the 3/14 edition of “Superstars of Wrestling.”
Back in the studio, Heenan & Perfect discuss the photos as Vince calls it damning evidence. Slick says the photos appear innocent.
Jim Powers vs. The Mountie w/ Jimmy Hart
This match took place at the 2/18 Challenge tapings in West Palm Beach, FL. Mountie has a new theme song about always getting his man. He starts off by taunting the crowd but ends up getting hit with an atomic drop. Hart distracts the ref but Powers is still able to avoid the Mountie’s sneak attack. Mountie bails and heads halfway up the aisle as Gorilla runs down Hart for selling out the Natural Disasters. Gorilla also said Hart lied to the Disasters by telling them not to show up early because they were on very late in the card. Mountie returns and lands a few shots before hitting a jumping back elbow smash. Powers bites Mountie to avoid a back drop and hits ten turnbuckle smashes in the corner. Mountie rolls outside after getting dropkicked but Mountie uses the cattle prod behind the ref’s back and rolls in for the win (4:47) *. Mountie then sings his theme song after the match.
Thoughts: Most of this was Gorilla running down how Hart sold out the Natural Disasters. The action here was forgettable.
Okerlund is in front of the Hoosier Dome. The WrestleMania bus pulls up and Heenan is driving. Heenan refuses to give Okerlund a ride.
The panel talks about WrestleMania as Heenan jokes about Savage having a better chance at winning the title then keeping his marriage together.
Repo Man vs. “Superfly” Jimmy Snuka
This match took place at the 1/28 Superstars Tapings in Amarillo, TX. Repo Man attacks Snuka in the corner then uses a back drop. Snuka fights back and works the arm for a while. Snuka chops down Repo Man after a terrible Irish whip sequence and once again goes back to the arm. Repo Man escapes and lands a few punches before hitting a back suplex. Repo Man cranks the neck then takes Snuka down with a knee smash. The announcers wonder whether or not Snuka is hurt because of how slowly paced this match is then Snuka starts fighting back. Snuka hits a poor excuse of a crossbody for a two count then avoids a charge in the corner and hits a back suplex. Snuka heads up top but misses a flipping senton then Repo Man covers for the win (6:49) DUD. Repo Man sneaks away after the match.
Thoughts: An embarrassing effort from two veteran wrestlers. The finish was dumb and this was Snuka’s last televised match of this current run.
The Undertaker w/ Paul Bearer vs. Col. Mustafa
This also took place at the 2/18 Challenge tapings. Mustafa tries to cheap shot Undertaker before the bell but that fails and Undertaker hits a tombstone for the win (0:18).
Thoughts: I guess Gen. Adnan is done but this match was what it needed to be as no one wanted to see several minutes of Mustafa selling Undertaker’s offense.
The Bret/Piper interview from the 3/15 edition of “Wrestling Challenge” is shown
Shawn Michaels w/ Sensational Sherri vs. British Bulldog
This match took place at the 2/17 Superstars tapings in Tampa, FL. Shawn bounces off of Bulldog twice then gets clotheslined over the top rope after he pulled up to avoid a leap frog. Shawn returns inside after regrouping with Sherri and is put in a headlock. Sherri yells at Bulldog then Bulldog blocks a leapfrog with a falling headbutt. Bulldog works the arm then hits a clothesline but Sherri jumps up on the apron to allow Shawn the time for a sneak attack. Shawn stomps away and uses a back drop as Sherri is happy. Shawn yanks Bulldog outside by grabbing the tights then Sherri crawls towards Bulldog and distracts him so Shawn can hit a running clothesline off of the apron as Bulldog crashes into the barricade. Back inside, Shawn covers for two then uses a chinlock. Shawn thumbs Bulldog in the eye and heads to the middle rope and drops an elbow as that gets two. Shawn goes back to the middle rope but gets punched in midair as Bulldog now fires away. Shawn uses an eye poke then Bulldog kicks Shawn off of the corner and outside. Bulldog brings Shawn back in and catches him with a press slam as he crotched Shawn on the top rope. Sherri is on the apron and chokes Bulldog and that is enough for a DQ (7:58) **1/4. After the match, Bulldog has Sherri up for a powerslam but Shawn makes the save.
Thoughts: Shawn was getting a push and Bulldog had not been in a feud for months but was still protected so the result was not a surprise. Both guys had chances to shine but it was a really just a basic match.
We see the Savage interview from the 3/14 edition of “Superstars of Wrestling.”
Sid Justice defeats Dale Wolfe in a match first shown on the 3/14 edition of “Superstars of Wrestling.”
The Warlord vs. Tatanka
Another match that took place at the 2/18 Challenge tapings. Whippleman is not here with Warlord. Tatanka lands some chops but runs into a boot after a reversal sequence. The announcers keep talking about the Flair vs. Savage WrestleMania match as Warlord drops Tatanka throat-first across the top rope. Warlord now uses a chinlock then takes Tatanka outside and rams his head against the steps. We get more talk about Flair and Savage as Warlord stays in control of the match. Warlord blocks a sunset flip attempt then taunts the crowd before going back to the chinlock. Some of the fans try to rally behind Tatanka by doing the tomahawk chop as Tatanka gets up but is sent back down with a clubbing forearm. Tatanka punches away but Warlord cuts him off to use another chinlock. Warlord cuts off another comeback then tries a slam but Tatanka turns that into a small package and gets the win (8:07) 1/2*.
Thoughts: This was to give Tatanka a win over a name opponent even if Warlord took most of the match. And the match was incredibly slow and dull. Speaking of the Warlord, they’ve quietly dropped Whippleman as his manager now that Whippleman is with Sid so its clear they do not have any plans for him at the moment.
Papa Shango defeats Lee Thomas in a match first shown on the 3/14 edition of “Superstars of Wrestling.”
“The Model” Rick Martel vs. Robbie Sampson
Martel works the arm as we hear him in an insert promo talking trash about Tatanka to hype up their match at WrestleMania. Martel misses a charge in the corner then toys with Sampson for a bit. Martel catches Sampson with a hotshot then puts him away with a Boston Crab (1:12).
Thoughts: More hype for the Tatanka/Martel WrestleMania match.
Final Thoughts: Shawn vs. Bulldog was really just a glimpse of what those two could do in a full-length competitive match but the rest of the exclusive matches were poor. Also, Heenan recycling the same material from Challenge to here is getting old too. The studio wrestling format is dated as the shows ratings have not improved enough.
