February 29, 1992
From the Amarillo Civic Center in Amarillo, TX
Your hosts are Vince McMahon and Mr. Perfect. They’ve removed Jim Neidhart from the opening montage and replaced him with Tatanka. Oddly enough, the New Foundation wrestled on this show.
This week, Jake Roberts is the guest on the “Funeral Parlor.” Also, there are new Tag Team champions we will learn about during the update. Also in action are El Matador, Sgt. Slaughter & Jim Duggan, and Papa Shango.
El Matador vs. Brian Elmore
The announcers talk about Matador’s WrestleMania match against Shawn Michaels. We then hear from Shawn & Sensational Sherri as Shawn promises to do a “Mexican hat dance” around Matador’s head then proclaims himself as the man of the 90’s and the sexiest man alive. Elmore lands some punches but Matador fights back. Matador stays in control then hits the El Peso de la Muerte for the win (1:28). Mr. Perfect then tells us how he likes Shawn Michaels.
Thoughts: The big news was learning that El Matador vs. Shawn Michaels has been added to WrestleMania as Shawn is slowly being pushed into the upper midcard.
WWF Update with Gene Okerlund. We learn that prior to the Natural Disasters vs. Legion of Doom Tag Title match in Denver, Jimmy Hart said due to the fact one of the LoD were hurt (Hawk had a hip pointer) they should replace the Disasters with someone else so the Disasters can face the LoD at full strength. Okerlund said that Ted DiBiase & Irwin R. Schyster are the new champions. Also, Okerlund said Hart took money and screwed over the Disasters, who never gave Hart consent to remove them from the match. President Jack Tunney then made Disasters vs. DiBiase & IRS for the belts at WrestleMania. We hear from DiBiase & IRS, now known as “Money Incorporated” as they call out The Disasters as Hart says the Disasters have faults. This is all certainly out of the blue and a contrived angle though and the Natural Disasters as faces chasing the belts is not an idea that will draw but they had to do something to get the belts off of LoD.
Don Ritcher vs. Repo Man
Repo Man beats on Richter then Virgil is shown in an insert promo running down Repo Man to continue that feud. Repo Man stays in control then grapevines Richter’s leg for the win (1:03). After the match, Repo Man drags Richter around the ring by a noose.
Thoughts: More hype for a played out lower card feud.
New Foundation vs. Todd Overbow & Khris Germany
The New Foundation take turns working over Germany. Overbow tags in and Owen takes him down and works the arm. The New Foundation stay in control then put Overbow away with a Rocket Launcher (2:10).
Thoughts: This was the final appearance of the New Foundation as Neidhart was fired a couple of weeks before this aired so their feud with the Beverly Brothers is over and was not even brought up on commentary.
Papa Shango vs. Larry Williams
Shango beats on Williams as the announcers talk about voodoo. Shango drops an elbow then screams something as the camera zooms in on the smoking skull. Vince talks about WrestleMania and how families are traveling from all over the country before Shango hits a reverse shoulderbreaker for the win (1:18). After the match, Shango shakes his bone necklace over Williams then talks about opening the gate.
Thoughts: They are trying to get over the voodoo aspect of the Shango gimmick now. They also hyped up WrestleMania as a global event.
WrestleMania Report with Gene Okerlund. We hear once again from Ric Flair & Perfect about this surprise they have in store for Randy Savage.
Texas Tornado vs. Kato
Tornado lands a few shots then hits the Tornado Punch for the win (0:39).
Thoughts: This was certainly brief and it was Tornado’s last TV match until Mid-April as Tornado was in rehab following an arrest for forging prescriptions.
Announcers plug WBF Magazine
Funeral Parlor with guest Jake Roberts. Bearer brings up what happened at SummerSlam when Jake ruined the wedding reception of Savage & Elizabeth then when Jake’s king cobra bit Savage. Bearer then talks about Jake making Elizabeth beg at This Tuesday in Texas then when Jake was about to hit either Savage or Elizabeth with a chair at Saturday Night’s Main Event but Jake cuts off Bearer and asks what side is he on and wants to speak to The Undertaker. We then hear The Undertaker’s music as he pops out of a coffin from behind. Jake wants to know who the hell Undertaker thinks he is and which side he is on but The Undertaker stares at the urn. Undertaker then tells Jake “not yours” in response to which side he is on so Jake smiles and steals the urn. Jake puts the urn inside of the coffin then shuts the door on top as Undertaker’s hand is caught. Jake then hits Bearer with a DDT as The Undertaker is unable to remove his hand. Jake then grabs a chair and uses it to beat Undertaker as the crowd boos. Jake then grabs the mic but sees Undertaker back up on his feet. Jake then taunts Undertaker before hitting him with the chair then Jake punches Undertaker in the ribs. Jake goes to speak again but Undertaker stands up. Jake calls Undertaker a “freak” before using the chair again but Undertaker is now dragging the casket towards Jake and shrugs off the chair shots. Jake now hammers away but Undertaker cannot be stopped as he backs Jake up the aisle. Several agents come out as Jake goes backstage while Undertaker follows. Awesome segment. Undertaker came out of this like a badass as he kept getting up from the chair shots and even dragged the casket with his hand stuck inside while Jake still comes off like a slimy prick only out for himself. If there were any doubts before, Undertaker is now 100% a babyface. Undertaker turning made sense because he was over and the heat on Hogan from the public eye combined with his fading popularity means they need new fan favorites with star potential.
Sgt. Slaughter & Jim Duggan vs. Rudy Gonzales & Dale Wolfe
Duggan slams Wolfe as Gonzales is tossed out by Slaughter after trying to interfere. Slaughter is now the legal man then he beats on Gonzales until the Irish Whip/Clothesline combo gives Slaughter & Duggan the win (1:39).
Thoughts: Nothing much to this at all as the Slaughter & Duggan team limps along.
Next week, we will get an update on what happened between Jake & Undertaker. In action will be Shawn Michaels, Money Inc., Tatanka, and Sid Justice. Plus, an interview with Ric Flair and more!
Final Thoughts: The Jake/Undertaker stuff was great and the company continues to push WrestleMania and fill out the rest of the card.
