WWF Wrestling Challenge – February 23rd, 1992
By Brian Bayless on August 14, 2018
February 23, 1992
From the Lubbock Municipal Coliseum in Lubbock, TX
Your hosts are Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan
In action this week are Shawn Michaels, New Foundation, and Papa Shango
New Foundation vs. Brooklyn Brawler & Louie Spicolli
Owen works over Spicolli as we see the Beverly Brothers & The Genius in an insert promo saying that they are much better than the New Foundation. Neidhart tags in and overpowers his opponents then the New Foundation put Spicolli away with a Rocket Launcher (2:10).
Thoughts: Neidhart was fired about six days before this match aired due to “unprofessional conduct.” However, Bret Hart said what happened was Neidhart kept stalling when asked to give a sample for a drug test then ended up sneaking out of the building. The next day, Neidhart arrived to a show and got pissed off to the point he shotputted a TV monitor but that monitor ended up breaking the ankle of an executive and led to Neidhart’s firing. The New Foundation’s last appearance was on the 2/29/92 episode of Superstars.
WWF Special Report with Lord Alfred Hayes. Same as “Superstars” that hyped up the WrestleMania double main event.
Papa Shango vs. Todd Overbow
Shango beats on Overbow and even busts out a dropkick. Shango continues to hammer away then puts Overbow away with a reverse shoulderbreaker (1:49).
Thoughts: The crowd is still not reacting to Shango but making your debut a week after your first vignette is tough to overcome. Overbow actually trained in the same class as Steve Austin and Austin even put him over as having a lot of talent but Overbow never ended up making it as a wrestler.
The announcers plug the “WBF Magazine.”
Khris Germany vs. Shawn Michaels w/ Sensational Sherri
Heenan says that Ted DiBiase has given Sherri his blessing to go after Shawn. Sherri is smitten with Shawn, who puts his earrings on her dress. Shawn & Sherri are shown in an insert promo with Shawn saying when he is done with someone he throws them out and that is the difference between a loser and a winner. Shawn stays in control then puts Germany away with a teardrop suplex (1:36).
Thoughts: They continue to make Shawn an arrogant prick and behind the scenes he was becoming that too. Shawn does show potential in the infancy of this character.
WrestleMania Report
The Jake Roberts/Undertaker footage from SNME are shown.
Next week in action are the Nasty Boys, Ted DiBiase & IRS, and Sid Justice. Plus, “Funeral Parlor” with Jake Roberts from Superstars and more!
Final Thoughts: Not much here besides the Jake/Undertaker stuff as the Road to WrestleMania VIII continues.
