WWF Superstars of Wrestling – February 8th, 1992
By Brian Bayless on August 7, 2018
February 8, 1992
From the Oceanfront Center in Daytona Beach, FL
Your hosts are Vince McMahon and Mr. Perfect
In action this week are Jake Roberts, Virgil, and the debut of Papa Shango. Plus, Ric Flair on the “Funeral Parlor” and more!
Natural Disasters vs. Bob Avery & Raymond Hammer
Earthquake destroys Hammer to start. Tugboat tags in and also beats down Hammer then chokes him out on the middle rope. The Disasters continue to destroy Hammer and hit him with several corner splashes. Avery runs in and gets run over and tossed outside then Hammer is put away after a pair of splashes (3:16).
Thoughts: Not much to this match. There was little talk of the Natural Disasters/Legion of Doom feud.
WWF Update with Gene Okerlund. We learn that Piper vs. Mountie will face off at “Saturday Night’s Main Event” and that Bret Hart has challenged the winner for a title shot at WrestleMania. We also get to see the new SNME logo now that its on Fox. Footage from last week’s WrestleMania press conference is shown with Sid pissed off Hogan was chosen to face Flair at WrestleMania. We then hear from Sid, saying people are taking what he said the wrong way and apologizes to Hogan. Okerlund reminds us once again that Hogan & Sid will be facing Flair & Undertaker at SNME. This is the first time they have really pushed an SNME this strong on TV. Its clear major angles will be taking place on the show.
Kato vs. Virgil
Virgil and Kato go back-and-forth for a bit as the announcers talk about the Intercontinental Title situation. Kato hits a few chops but Virgil comes back with a sunset flip for two. Repo Man is then shown in a promo laughing about repossessing Virgil’s career then Virgil ducks an attack and runs wild until getting tossed outside. Kato poses in the ring then suplexes Virgil back inside for two but Virgil fires up and lands some jabs then uses the Million Dollar Dream for the win (3:27).
Thoughts: The Virgil/Repo Man feud continues to chug along. Repo Man pretty much cuts the same exact insert promo each time Virgil wrestles.
Jake “The Snake” Roberts vs. DD Russell
Jake breaks cleanly in the corner as the announcers talk about Elizabeth being in Randy Savage’s corner this weekend when he faces Jake. Jake then hammers away and tosses Russell outside. Jake rolls Russell back into the ring as Perfect says if Savage loses then he’ll lose Elizabeth’s respect. Jake hits Russell with a clothesline then uses a DDT for the win (2:27). The crowd cheered when Jake signaled for the DDT.
Thoughts: All hype for the Jake/Savage match at SNME.
Sgt. Slaughter & Hacksaw Jim Duggan vs. Bill Badd & Jim James
The announcers talk about the Tag Team Title match on SNME against Legion of Doom and the Beverly Brothers as Slaughter & Duggan shake off a sneak attack. Slaughter beats on James then Badd then Duggan tags and uses a Three Point Stance for the win (2:24).
Thoughts: They were still pushing that Tag Title match on SNME the day SNME would air even though the match never took place.
Funeral Parlor with guests Ric Flair & Mr. Perfect. Bearer asks them about the tag match on SNME. Perfect tells Hogan & Sid that destruction will hit them then Flair hypes up the match with some crazy rant that failed to captivate the crowd. Another segment to hype up the SNME main event.
More memorable WrestleMania moments are shown.
Dale Wolfe vs. Papa Shango
Shango comes out with a smoking skull and a necklace made of bones. Shango backs Wolfe into the corner then kicks him in the gut. Shango chokes Wolfe out against the ropes then hits a backbreaker as a frightened Jamison watches from ringside. Shango then hits a reverse shoulderbreaker and yells something that sounds similar to “zumba” and that gets the win (1:28).
Thoughts: The entrance was cool but after just one vignette the character was completely unfamiliar to the crowd.
The Mountie w/ Jimmy Hart vs. Mike Casey
Mountie immediately beats on Casey as the announcers talk about his title shot against Piper tonight on SNME. Mountie taunts the fans and tosses Casey outside as we hear from Piper in an insert promo telling Mountie he is “too legit to quit.” Mountie stays in control then hits a dropkick for the win (1:30). After the match, Mountie shocks Casey then taunts the crowd.
Thoughts: A dominating win for Mountie to give him momentum heading into his IC Title match.
Next week in action are Roddy Piper, Shawn Michaels, and the Nasty Boys. The show ends with more SNME hype including comments from several competitors.
Final Thoughts: This show was all about hyping up SNME. We also saw Papa Shango’s debut but besides that the rest was almost like a SNME infomercial.
