WWF Prime Time Wrestling – January 27th, 1992

By Brian Bayless on August 1, 2018

January 27, 1992

Vince McMahon is the host with panelists Bobby Heenan, Mr. Perfect, Slick, and Gorilla Monsoon

This week in action are El Matador & Virgil vs. Ted DiBiase & Repo Man, Bushwhackers vs. Nasty Boys, Jim Powers vs. Skinner, Bret Hart vs. Col. Mustafa, and Marty Jannetty vs. Kato

The panel talks about the top 5 competitors for the World Heavyweight Title. Heenan says you can call in and vote and he can call as many times as he wants and change his voice. Perfect says they will vote for Hulk Hogan because they know they can beat him. Slick picks Roddy Piper because of his momentum while Heenan calls in his vote and disguises his voice.

Col. Mustafa w/ Gen. Adnan vs. Bret “The Hitman” Hart

This match took place at the 1/8 “Wrestling Challenge” tapings in Ft. Myers, FL. Announcers are Sean Mooney and Lord Alfred Hayes and they talk about Bret vowing to reclaim the Intercontinental Title. Mustafa stalls then Bret puts him in a full nelson. Mustafa reaches the ropes then tells the crowd to shut up. Mustafa lands some forearm smashes but Bret comes back with a clothesline and a slam. Bret fires away in the corner but Mustafa loads up his boot after the ref breaks them up and Bret gets kicked in the chest. Mustafa hits a gutwrench suplex for two but Bret fights back. Bret knocks down Mustafa then hits an elbow drop from the middle rope that gets two. Russian leg sweep gets two then Bret rolls outside only for Mustafa to knock him off of the apron. Adnan then tries to yank Bret off but gets kicked then Bret slingshots back in with a sunset flip and gets the win (6:21) 3/4*.

Thoughts: Bret got the best match possible out of Mustafa here. I cannot state enough how awful the Mustafa & Adnan pairing were.

Back in the studio, Heenan is still disguising his voice to make votes for Hogan. Gorilla would like to see Sid Justice get a shot but how can Hogan get denied a chance to become a five-time champion. Vince wants to see The Undertaker face Flair but Heenan & Perfect disagree. Vince says its up to Jack Tunney and the fans though.

Kato vs. Marty Jannetty

This is from the 1/7 “Superstars of Wrestling” taping in Daytona Beach, FL. The announcers comment how strange it is to see Marty on his own since Shawn Michaels ended their team. These two fight over a lockup as Lord Alfred feels bad for Kato due to the fact he is far from home and verbally abused by the fans. Kato hits some chops in the corner but Marty fights back. Lord Alfred continues to sympathize with Kato then is pissed at Marty for breaking the rules. Kato sends Marty into the post then rolls back inside as Lord Alfred says Shawn is better off without Marty and Mooney wants to know why. Marty hits a super kick as Lord Alfred blames Marty for Shawn losing to Ric Flair a few weeks ago. Kato hits a pair of elbow drops but Marty catches him with a punch then hits a Rocker Dropper for the win (3:49) *1/2.

Thoughts: The most interesting thing about this match was Lord Alfred heeling on Marty. With Shawn turning heel and getting a new look with Marty still in his Rockers gear, its clear which of the two the company is going to get behind.

Back in the studio the announcers talk about WrestleMania VIII. Slick is chartering a bus with members of his church as Heenan & Perfect make fun of that for sounded boring and cheap. Heenan says all of his friends will be there and he’ll pass out coasters saying he is Indiana’s favorite “Bobby” as Vince says that is Bobby Knight. Heenan also has his own hockey jersey then proves to be clueless about the sport and talks about being featured at the Fox 103.3 radio event.

Skinner defeats Jim Powers from the 12/29 MSG show.

Back in the studio, Heenan talks about the radio event and is grilled about that by Gorilla.

Pete Sanchez & Jim Cooper vs. Legion of Doom

This match also aired on the 2/1 edition of “Superstars of Wrestling.” The LoD beat on Sanchez to start. Cooper tags in and does not fare any better than his partner and the LoD put him away with the Doomsday Device (2:34).

Thoughts: An easy win for the Legion of Doom as they are still feuding with the Natural Disasters.

We now see Ted DiBiase & Sensational Sherri in Tocula, Mexico. DiBiase jokes they are milking the bull El Matador tamed then makes fun of Mexico losing the Alamo. DiBiase wants to know what type of person is a Tito Santana fan as we see a man sleeping underneath a tree. Sherri wakes him up and yells “no sleepo” then DiBiase asks the guy if he is a fan of El Matador as the guy speaks Spanish and perks up at the mention of El Matador. The man then extends his hand but DiBiase kicks him down. In the studio, Vince apologizes for what we just saw then Heenan makes jokes about that being the Mayor of Tocula but Perfect says that is “Senor Slum.” Slick wants to quote scriptures to DiBiase then Heenan whistles “La Cucaracha.” Well, here is the follow up to that vignette that aired a few weeks back on Challenge. This particular vignette was even more offensive.

Repo Man & “Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase w/ Sensational Sherri vs. El Matador & Virgil

A rematch from the This Tuesday in Texas PPV that took place at the 1/7 Superstars tapings. DiBiase distracts his opponents to allow Repo Man a chance at a sneak attack.Virgil & Matador fight back and clear the ring as this barely got a reaction at all. Virgil now works over Repo Man then Matador tags into the match. DiBiase comes in and beats on Matador in the corner then he bails but is met by Virgil and that gives Matador time to come out and hammer away. Back inside, Matador sends DiBiase over the top rope with an atomic drop. Matador is tripped up by Sherri on the outside then DiBiase takes control. DiBiase & Repo Man cut off the ring. Repo Man works a body scissors for a bit then DiBiase tags in but Matador fights back and makes a tag but the ref was distracted by Repo Man. DiBiase ducks his head but Matador hits a swinging neckbreaker as both men are down then tag out. Virgil runs wild on Repo Man and sends him outside with a dropkick. DiBiase runs in from behind to knock Virgil outside then Matador beats on DiBiase. Repo Man chokes out Virgil with his rope then drags him up the aisle for the DQ (9:18) **1/4. Matador then heads up the aisle and chases Repo Man & DiBiase away.

Thoughts: Decent tag match but nowhere near at the level of their match at This Tuesday in Texas. Based on the finish you’d expect these feuds to continue.

Top 5 Contender Comments are shown. After that, we see Heenan making more votes for Hogan

Nasty Boys defeat Bushwhackers from the 12/29 MSG show.

IRS defeats Kenny Kendall from the 1/26 edition of “Wrestling Challenge.”

Beverly Brothers defeat Ray Hammer & Terry Davis from the 1/26 edition of “Wrestling Challenge.”

Vince introduces us to a Chris Chavis vignette. After that we get some lame comedy attempts by Heenan & Perfect.

Sid Justice defeats Mike Davis in a match first shown on the 1/25 edition of “Superstars of Wrestling.”

Next week in action are Marty Jannetty vs. Rick Martel, British Bulldog vs. Berzerker, Beverly Brothers vs. Greg Valentine & Kerry Von Erich, Sgt. Slaughter vs. Col. Mustafa & Gen. Adnan, and IRS vs. Virgil.

The show closes with Vince reminding us of Tunney’s decision this weekend.

Final Thoughts: The theme of this show was hyping up the #1 contender announcement. For some reason Heenan was trying to stack the vote in favor of Hogan. The exclusive matches were not great but about average when compare to most episodes of PTW. And I’ll also review next week’s PTW because why not.
