January 25, 1992
From the Oceanfront Center in Daytona Beach, FL
Your hosts are Vince McMahon and Mr. Perfect. We see Perfect gloating over the fact Flair is the new champion.
This week, we will have a Royal Rumble report. Also in action are Sid Justice, Ted DiBiase, and Bret Hart.
New Foundation vs. Bob & Brad Avery
I have no idea how to tell the Avery Brothers apart but they are both an embarrassment to pro wrestling. The announcers talk about Ric Flair being the WWF World Heavyweight champion as Perfect sounds ill. We then hear from the Beverly Brothers with Genius as they run down the New Foundation. The New Foundation stay in control as Owen hits a missile dropkick then soon after that they use a rocket launcher for the win (2:46).
Thoughts: The Beverly Brothers will now focus on the New Foundation after their disaster at the Rumble with The Bushwhackers & Jamison.
Royal Rumble Report with Gene Okerlund. We get a run down of the show with Roddy Piper as the new Intercontinental Champion. Okerlund also says we will hear from the top competitors to the World Heavyweight Title later on in the show. Now, we hear from Flair & Perfect as they put themselves over. Flair talks about winning the title in record-setting fashion and how he told everyone up front that to be the man you have to beat the man. Flair ends by calling himself the greatest thing going today. The big news here is finding out the challengers for Flair and that Piper is the new Intercontinental Champion.
Mickey Jay vs. “The Model” Rick Martel
The announcers talk about who will be the #1 contender to Flair. Vince then plugs the Hulk Hogan Hotline as Martel dropkicks Jay. Martel hits another dropkick as Vince makes fun of his pink tights. Martel taunts the crowd as Vince says we will hear from the top 5 contenders named by WWF President Jack Tunney as they all try to claim why they deserve a title shot. Martel hits a third dropkick and does some jumping jacks then soon after that uses a Boston Crab for the win (2:42).
Thoughts: So we will hear from the top 5 contenders, whoever they may be, later on in the show. Regarding Martel, it appears all of his heat is gone after returning from his layoff. To be honest, the whole gimmick feels dated.
Another plug for the “WBF Magazine” and the Ultimate Personal Fitness Weekend.
Bret Hart vs. Jack Owens
Vince talks about Bret losing the IC Title after defending it against doctors orders. Bret works over Owens then we hear him in an insert promo assuring us that he is feeling great then congratulates Piper for becoming the new champion before calling out The Mountie. Bret drops an elbow from the middle rope then uses the sharpshooter for the win (2:26).
Thoughts: Bret will continue his feud with The Mountie. For now, anyway.
An ad for WrestleMania VIII airs.
“Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase w/ Sensational Sherri vs. DD Russell
Russell has a terrible look and some odd looking tights. DiBiase takes Russell down with a knee smash then continues to beat him down. DiBiase and Sherri talk to each other then Sherri kisses DiBiase before DiBiase uses the Million Dollar Dream for the win (1:50).
Thoughts: An easy win for DiBiase but his feud against El Matador was not mentioned. That’s something to keep an eye on going forward.
Back to Okerlund in the studio as we learn one of the top 5 contenders will face Flair for the title at WrestleMania. The contenders are Hogan, The Undertaker, Piper, Randy Savage, and Sid Justice. Okerlund tells us that next week, Tunney will name the person who will face Flair for the title. Okerlund then tells us fans to call into “Prime Time Wrestling” this Monday night to say who we want as the #1 contender.
Repo Man vs. Kevin Katlin
Repo Man attacks Katlin as Vince talks about the vote line this Monday on Prime Time. Perfect wants to know what happened to the win/loss record determining the #1 contender as Repo Man stays in control. We hear from Virgil man in an insert promo as he promises to give Repo Man the “whoopin” he deserves. Perfect makes fun of Virgil’s promo then Repo Man chokes out Katlin in the ropes and grapevines the leg for the win (1:58). After the match, Repo Man drags Katlin around the ring with a noose before leaving.
Thoughts: Repo Man and Virgil is still being pushed as a lower card feud. Its getting a lot of TV time too.
Chris Chavis is now shown sitting in front of a campfire. Chavis says he has embarked on a quest for courage, respect, and honor. Chavis then says like an eagle he will soar in the WWF.
Another plug for WBF Magazine.
Mike Casey vs. Sid Justice
Justice beats on Casey to start. He hits a chokeslam then press slams Casey back inside from the floor. Vince talks about who will be named the #1 contender to Flair as Sid hits a helicopter slam then a powerbomb for the win (2:09).
Thoughts: A dominating performance for Sid to help him look like a favorite to win the title shot against Flair at WrestleMania.
Next week in action are IRS, Legion of Doom, The Undertaker, and debut of Chris Chavis and his new Native American name. Plus, Sensational Sherri as guest on the “Funeral Parlor” and the announcement of who will face Ric Flair at WrestleMania VIII.
Final Thoughts: We saw the key results from the PPV and that one of the top 5 competitors will be facing Flair for the title at WrestleMania VIII and us fans could vote to influence the decision. And we get to find out who will be facing Flair next week on a show that is shaping up to be huge.
