Music royalties

By Scott Keith on July 26, 2018

Hi Scott,

Not sure if you can answer this, but I was wondering about how much royalties are for use of licensed music.

For example, WWE edited out "My Way" from WM 17, "Ain't no grave" and "For whom the bell tolls" from WM 27, etc. from their DVD releases. It's a little irritating, I especially miss the WM 27 music 'cause it added to the atmosphere of HHH/Taker.

You don't see things like this happening to movies – even low-budget stuff. If there is a licensed song, it's there for life. Is it really so expensive or is Vince just cheap?

It's REALLY expensive. Music rights fees are administered by two groups, called ASCAP and BMI, and they are basically a group of humorless lawyers not unlike the ones employed by Mr. Burns. It's their stated goal in life to make sure that if someone is humming JUST a bit too much of a song on TV, then the record company gets paid for it. Not the artist, mind you, but the record company, the real heroes. When Vince licenses use of a particular song, unless it's a specially negotiated case like Punk's "Cult of Personality" or whatever the "official song of the show" is, it's typically for the live PPV airing only as a flat fee. If the song were to be played on the Network or TV afterwards or home video, then it would fall into a hideously complex "per use" area where he would essentially have to pay royalties based on every time the song was "played", which in the minds of the lawyers usually equates to "every person theoretically watching the show at that moment". It can literally add up to millions of dollars for expensive pieces of music. All of which is why it is perfectly understandable why they scrub licensed music from the shows after initial airing. It's just hundreds of thousands of dollars that they don't need to spend and adds nothing to the show.
