WWF Superstars of Wrestling – January 11th, 1992
By Brian Bayless on July 25, 2018
January 11, 1992
From the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, TX
Your hosts are Vince McMahon and Mr. Perfect
This week we will see highlights . Plus, Ric Flair on the “Funeral Parlor.” Also in action are El Matador, Natural Disasters, and IRS
Hacksaw Jim Duggan & Sgt. Slaughter vs. Barry Horowitz & Jesse Hernandez
Slaughter beats down Horowitz to start. Duggan leads the crowd into “USA” chants then we hear from the Nasty Boys & Jimmy Hart in an insert promo as they want to finish off Slaughter & Duggan at the Rumble. Vince talks about a tag match not happening in the Rumble match then Slaughter & Duggan work over Hernandez and put him away with an Irish whip/clothesline combo (3:34).
Thoughts: More hype for the Slaughter & Duggan/Nasty Boys feud.
WWF Update with Gene Okerlund. We are shown footage from Sid Justice’s appearance on the “Barber Shop” as he talks about a man who does not need a manager and stands alone then confirms that his arm is at 100%. We then hear comments from other men in the Rumble match.
Irwin R. Schyster vs. Robert Taylor
IRS beats on Taylor to start. IRS yells at the ref and that allows Taylor to sneak in a rollup for two. IRS is pissed and tosses Taylor outside as Vince says you cannot take your eyes off of someone in the Rumble. IRS stays in control then hits the Write Off for the win (1:49).
Thoughts: No heat for IRS here as this character is seemingly on TV every single week.
Footage from This Tuesday in Texas is shown.
El Matador vs. Brian Donahue
Donahue backs Matador into the corner but is shoved back. Matador hits a dropkick then we hear from Texas Tornado as he tells Matador all friendships are out the window at the Rumble. Donahue lands a few shots then uses the El Paso de la Muerte for the win (1:13).
Thoughts: The every man for himself theme of the Rumble was pushed here.
Another plug for the “WBF Magazine.”
Funeral Parlor with guests Ric Flair & Mr. Perfect. Flair says when he wins the title at the Rumble they will have to call him the greatest of all-time and tells Tunney to distort his title now because with the WWF World Heavyweight will make him #1 and that will make Hulk Hogan walk around as #2 with Perfect telling Flair Hogan will be #3. Flair was decent here but this was hardly a memorable promo.
Royal Rumble Report with Gene Okerlund.
Another vignette for Chris Chavis. We are shown his people dancing and celebrating then Chavis says he has found his place and vows to be a leader of the new Indian Nation.
Bobby Jones & Ken Johnson vs. Natural Disasters w/ Jimmy Hart
Perfect calls out Chavis for not training and sitting in front of campfires. The Disasters toss around Jones to start. We hear from the Legion of Doom as they call out the Disasters as the announcers talk about their feud. Disasters stay in control and put Jones away with a double splash combo (3:17).
Thoughts: More hype for the Tag Team Title match at the Rumble.
Next week in action are Nasty Boys, Virgil, Jake Roberts, and Randy Savage vs. Barbarian. Plus, an interview with Hulk Hogan and more.
Final Thoughts: All basic Royal Rumble hype on this show. Nothing else more to add.
