From the Frank Erwin Center in Austin, TX
Your hosts are Vince McMahon and Mr. Perfect
This week, we will have a special interview with Randy Savage & Elizabeth. In action are The Undertaker, Roddy Piper, Beverly Brothers, and the British Bulldog.
Roddy Piper vs. Brooklyn Brawler
We see Ric Flair in an insert promo combing his hair then telling us that his chances of winning the Rumble match are astronomical and that Piper might not even show up. Brawler blows his nose into Piper’s t-shirt then gets his ass kicked. Piper puts on Brawler’s hat and hammers away before using a sleeper for the win (1:18). After the match, Piper wipes his shirt on Brawler then puts on Brawler’s hat before tossing it away.
Thoughts: Piper toyed with Brawler as he is positioned as one of the top several guys in the match.
WWF Update with Gene Okerlund. It is sponsored by the WWF Merchandise Catalog. The focus is on last week’s Tag Title match where The Rockers lost then Shawn slapped Marty twice after blaming in for the loss. Okerlund says they are not seeing eye to eye then we learn that the LoD will be defending the Tag Titles at the Royal Rumble against the Natural Disasters. We hear from the Disasters & Jimmy Hart as they vow to become champions. Now the Rumble card is complete as we await the next chapter of The Rockers saga.
Louie Spicolli vs. British Bulldog
Vince says that Bulldog could win the Rumble match. Bulldog runs over Spicolli a few times then hits a dropkick. Bulldog then catches Spicolli with a slam as we hear from Jim Duggan in an insert promo saying he likes Bulldog but at the Rumble friendships go out the window. Bulldog skies Spicolli with a back drop then soon after that uses the running powerslam for the win (1:40).
Thoughts: More emphasis on the every man for himself theme at the Rumble here.
The announcers plug the newest edition of “WBF Magazine” then the Ultimate Personal Fitness Weekend.
The Mountie w/ Jimmy Hart vs. Rudy Gonzalez
Mountie beats on Gonzalez as we hear from Bret Hart in an insert promo vowing revenge on The Mountie. Mountie uses his control techniques then taunts the crowd and soon after that uses a knee drop for the win (2:10). After the match, Mountie demands they stop his music then he cuffs Gonzalez to the ropes and shocks him with the cattle prod after reading his rights.
Thoughts: Hype for the Bret/Mountie IC Title match at the PPV.
We see the replay of Jake Roberts slapping Elizabeth from “This Tuesday in Texas.”
Okerlund now welcomes Savage & Elizabeth to the interview platform. Savage talks about the Rumble match and how the championship belt is the grand prize and he wants to go back to the top of the mountain. Savage said there are no friends in the Rumble as its every man for himself. Savage said he will get Jake and doesnt care when. Okerlund now asks Elizabeth about Jake as she almost feels sorry for him because of what Savage will do then she hopes to hear Savage announced as the winner of the Rumble match. Generic hype for Savage as a Rumble match favorite here.
Beverly Brothers w/ The Genius vs. Scott Bazo & Ken Johnson
The Genius talks about the Beverly Brothers being champions and calls out Neidhart as Jamison is taunting Genius by holding up action figures of The Bushwhackers. The Beverly Brothers beat down Johnson to start. We now hear from Bushwhackers & Jamison in an insert promo as they promise to embarrass the Beverlys and Genius at the Rumble. Bazo is in now as Genius and Jamison have words with each other. The Beverly Brothers stay in control and use the Shaker Heights Spike for the win (2:50).
Thoughts: More of the Jamison nonsense which did not get over during this match.
We get another vignette for Chris Chavis. He is at the river and calls it a source of food, transportation and the life blood of his people. Chavis then says he will be the river and carry the sacred wisdom to all nations.
Royal Rumble Report with Gene Okerlund.
The Undertaker w/ Paul Bearer vs. Richie Garvin
Undertaker beats down Garvin as Jake is shown in an insert promo telling Undertaker to beware of the snake and closes by saying “trust me.” Undertaker then puts Garvin away with a tombstone (1:43). After the match, Garvin is stuffed inside of a bodybag then attacked.
Thoughts: Jake’s insert promo was intriguing as The Undertaker is another one of the Rumble match favorites.
Next week in action are El Matador, Natural Disasters, Jim Duggan & Sgt. Slaughter, and the featured match of The Barbarian vs. Randy Savage. Plus, Ric Flair & Mr. Perfect as guests on the “Funeral Parlor” and more!
Final Thoughts: More basic Rumble match hype on this show. We also got another vignette for Chavis but with the PPV two weeks away expect more generic hype on TV.
