WWF Wrestling Challenge – November 24, 1991

By Brian Bayless on July 1, 2018

November 24, 1991

From the Hara Arena in Dayton, OH

Your hosts are Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan

This week’s featured match is Jim Duggan vs. Jerry Sags. Also in action are British Bulldog, Beverly Brothers, and more!

The Rockers vs. Kato & Brooklyn Brawler

Marty takes down Brawler with a rollup for two after a reversal sequence. Marty then catches Brawler with a super kick that showed a lot of air as we hear from The Bushwhackers in an insert promo putting over The Rockers as their Survivor Series partners. Heenan tells us that Shawn will face Beau Beverly at the Survivor Series Showdown as Shawn now works over Brawler. Shawn then tags Marty and press slams him on top of Brawler but decides to tell Marty to get off and makes the cover himself for the win (2:34). After the match, Shawn looks into the camera and says “now we’re cooking” then leaves with Marty.

Thoughts: The Rockers appeared to be on the same page for this match. They also announced a match for the Survivor Series Showdown that never ended up taking place.

WWF Special Report with Lord Alfred Hayes. Replay of last week’s “Funeral Parlor” from Superstars where Ric Flair distracted Hulk Hogan, allowing The Undertaker to attack from behind.

The Mountie w/ Jimmy Hart vs. Burt Stiles

Heenan tells us that Sgt. Slaughter is backstage trying to make fans and calls him garbage but Gorilla says it takes guts for him to show face. Gorilla brings up the “jailbird” chant as Heenan jokingly asks if Stiles has served time. Mountie beats on Stiles then puts him away quickly with a two-handed chokeslam (1:07). Heenan also brings up that Virgil vs. Ted DiBiase for the Million Dollar Title will take place at the Survivor Series Showdown then Mountie shocks Stiles after reading him his rights.

Thoughts: The biggest takeaway here was learning Slaughter has came back and was apparently backstage.

In the Event Center, Sean Mooney brings up how Randy Savage was bitten by a cobra.

Repo Man vignette from Superstars airs.

Jerry Sags w/ Jimmy Hart & Brian Knobbs vs. Hacksaw Jim Duggan

Sags bails and yells at the fans before huddling with his guys. Duggan gets the crowd behind him then clotheslines Sags, who bails again. The announcers mention how Duggan’s Survivor Series team is down a member then Duggan hits Sags with an atomic drop. Duggan uses mounted punches in the corner then catches Sags with a slam. Duggan goes for the Three Point Stance but Knobbs grabs his leg then Sags attacks from behind. The Nasty Boys now beat on Duggan and the match is ruled a DQ (2:40) 1/4*. After the match, The Nasty Boys clothesline Duggan with his flag and continue the beatdown until Sgt. Slaughter makes the save. Slaughter then takes Hart and tosses him outside onto his team. Duggan backs Slaughter into the corner with his 2×4 but Slaughter pleads with him for a bit. A “USA” chant breaks out as Duggan was about to leave then Slaughter hands the flag back to Duggan and salutes before leaving. Duggan then waves Slaughter back as Heenan is calling Slaughter a traitor. Slaughter enters the ring and Duggan hands him the flag. Slaughter raises the flag as Gorilla proclaims he is a changed man while Slaughter now kisses the flag. Both men shake hands after that as a shot of a kid in the crowd cheering is shown.

Thoughts: The Slaughter face turn is complete now as he showed his sincerity by helping out Duggan and respecting the flag. I guess they kind of tipped off something like this would happen when it was mentioned that Slaughter was walking around backstage. Slaughter got booed at shows after this and while that stopped the run never became successful.

The clip of President Jack Tunney telling us Savage’s reinstatement is still under consideration.

British Bulldog vs. Tom Stone

Gorilla plugs Jim Quinn being on the cover of “WBF Magazine” as Bulldog overpowers Stone. Bulldog blocks a kick and hits an atomic drop as Gorilla says Duggan could pick Slaughter as Jim Neidhart’s replacement at Survivor Series as Heenan says this is a plan by Slaughter to turn on Duggan. Heenan brings up that Duggan will name Neidhart’s replacement on the Survivor Series Showdown as Bulldog hits a running powerslam for the win (1:28).

Thoughts: The announcers mostly focused on Slaughter’s return outside of some talk of WBF Magazine. Funny story about Heenan’s mention of this being Slaughter’s plan to turn on Duggan. According to Slaughter, after he saved Duggan he came backstage and Vince hugged him then asked Slaughter if he would turn on Duggan. Slaughter said sure but Vince then said they better not do that.

Barber Shop with guests Undertaker & Paul Bearer. Beefcake asks about what they did to Hulk Hogan on the “Funeral Parlor” and calls them the slime of the earth among other things before calling them out for not finishing the job. Bearer & Undertaker talk about Hulkamania dying at the Survivor Series as the Undertaker promises to extract the soul of Hulkamania and plunge it into internal darkness. More talk about the Undertaker killing off Hulkamania.

Survivor Series Report

Beverly Brothers w/ The Genius vs. Reno Riggins & ???

I did not recognize Riggins’ partner. Riggins gets tossed outside as his partner is beat down. Beau holds up the guy’s face in front of the camera and says he will not be a TV star at their expense. Blake hits a powerslam as the Beverly Brothers stay in control until hitting the Shaker Heights Spike for the win (1:55).

Thoughts: Just a quick match to put over the Beverly Brothers.

Gorilla plugs the Survivor Series Showdown as we hear comments from Virgil and Ted DiBiase to hype up the Million Dollar Title match.

Final Thoughts: Slaughter returning was the major exclusive segment while the rest of the show was last minute Survivor Series hype.
