WWF Wrestling Challenge – September 29th, 1991

By Brian Bayless on June 4, 2018

September 29, 1991

From the Cornwall Civic Complex in Cornwall, Ontario, Canada

Your hosts are Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan

In action this week are Sid Justice, Ric Flair, Nasty Boys, and The Dragon. Plus, the Legion of Doom as guests on the “Barber Shop” and more.

Big Bully Busick and Harvey Whippleman are standing in the ring. Whippleman puts over Busick for being the greatest wrestler and toughest man in the WWF and demands competition. They bully Mike McGuirk into making an announcement that Busick wants competition but out comes Sid Justice.

Big Bully Busick w/ Harvey Whippleman vs. Sid Justice

Sid attacks Busick then hits a chokeslam before the powerbomb gets the win (0:37). After the match, Sid looks into the camera and tells us to learn to like the powerbomb. Whippleman gets in Sid’s face then runs away after Sid raised his fist.

Thoughts: Having Busick lose in this manner shows you how much they thought of him as a talent but it also sold Sid’s character of serving justice by giving the bully his comeuppance.

WWF Special Report with Lord Alfred Hayes. Gene Okerlund’s interview with Sgt. Slaughter that was first shown on Superstars.

Phil Apollo & Bill Pierce vs. Nasty Boys w/ Jimmy Hart

The Nasty Boys beat on Apollo to start. Pierce tags in and gets destroyed as the announcers talk about “Suburban Commando then the Nasty Boys get a win with the running powerslam/flying elbow drop combo (2:41). After the match, Heenan said that The Rockers are in a lot of trouble.

Thoughts: After Heenan’s comments it seems the Nasty Boys will completely move away from the Legion of Doom and feud with The Rockers.

The Dragon vs. Mike Williams

Dragon takes down Williams with a dropkick then with an enziguiri as Williams bails. Dragon is dragged outside but he fights back with a chop. Williams attacks Dragon but Dragon comes back with a crossbody for two. Dragon then uses a swinging neckbreaker and a clothesline then we hear from Skinner in an insert promo as he wants Dragon’s “hide.” Dragon then heads up top to put Williams away with a flying body press (2:25).

Thoughts: Dragon gets another win as they hype his feud against Skinner.

Same vignette of Tito Santana becoming El Matador that aired on this week’s Superstars.

Mark Thomas vs. “Million Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase w/ Sensational Sherri

DiBiase knees Thomas down then hammers away. Sherri yells into the camera to tell Virgil what will happen next time he faces DiBiase as Thomas gets dumped outside. DiBiase stays on the assault as we hear from Virgil in an insert promo as he says DiBiase will never get his belt back. DiBiase catches Thomas with a powerslam then uses the Million Dollar Dream for the win (1:56).

Thoughts: More hype for the Virgil/DiBiase feud.

Barber Shop with guests Legion of Doom. Beefcake asks them about the Natural Disasters saying they’ll take the Tag Team Titles. The LoD call out the Disasters for going after an injured Andre the Giant at SummerSlam then say they will beat the Disasters. Just a generic interview from the LoD. Their feud with the Disasters doesn’t have that much heat though. They had the angle at SummerSlam and since then its been based on promos.

Ray Garcia vs. Irwin R. Schyster

The announcers talk about Randy Savage being placed on 90 day probation as IRS beats on Garcia. Gorilla then plugs the Savage/Elizabeth hotline as Garcia is dumped outside. Gorilla teases Heenan then IRS uses the Write Off for the win (2:26).

Thoughts: The focus was on Savage here. No mention of the IRS/Bossman feud.

The trailer for “Suburban Commando” airs.

Ric Flair vs. Jim Powers

Heenan is upset with McGuirk for messing up Flair’s introduction. Powers uses a shoulder block then Flair chops him in the corner. We hear from Flair in an insert promo that shows the NWA World Heavyweight Title belt as he calls out Hogan and Piper then Flair puts Powers away with the figure four (1:26).

Thoughts: Not much to this at all. Just a quick squash match to close out the “B” syndicated show. Flair just came off as another guy on the roster here unlike Sid Justice.

Next week in action are the Natural Disasters, Big Bossman, Bret Hart, and the British Bulldog.

Final Thoughts: The Sid/Busick segment was fun and Flair had his first official WWF televised match so it was more newsworthy than usual this week. I really do not have much more to add.
