WWF Wrestling Challenge – September 22nd, 1991
By Brian Bayless on June 1, 2018
September 22, 1991
From the Erie Civic Center in Erie, PA
Your hosts are Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan and they talk about Savage destroying Jack Tunney’s office after not getting reinstated as a performer.
In action this week are Jim Neidhart, The Undertaker, and Virgil. Plus, Ric Flair as guest on the “Barber Shop” and more.
Virgil vs. Bubba Monroe
Virgil lands some jabs then says he’ll make this match short. Virgil throws more punches in the corner as Heenan makes jokes about Virgil and the belt. We hear from Ted DiBiase & Sensational Sherri in an insert promo as DiBiase says seeing Virgil with his belt makes him sick and that common peasants do not know how to handle wealth. Virgil looks into the camera to tell DiBiase he’ll have to kill him to get the belt back then soon after that Virgil puts Monroe away with the Million Dollar Dream (2:33).
Thoughts: Virgil is the “common millionaire” now against his pissed off former boss.
WWF Special Report with Lord Alfred Hayes. This is a replay of the Savage sit-down interview from Superstars.
The Berzerker w/ Mr. Fuji vs. Ron Cumberledge
Berzerker boots Cumberledge in the face then asks Fuji for Hogan. Heenan then tells us this week on “Prime Time” are Roddy Piper, Lou Ferrigno, and Jake Roberts as Berzerker stays in control. Gorilla tells Heenan to get bodyguards as Heenan panics then Berzerker inflicts more punishment then tosses Cumberledge over the top rope and gets the win via count out (2:22).
Thoughts: This segment was pretty much a plug for “Prime Time Wrestling” The Berzerker remains without any direction other than constantly winning TV squash matches via count out.
The Tito Santana vignette airs about him becoming El Matador.
Tony Diamond vs. The Mountie w/ Jimmy Hart
Gorilla says he’s not sure Mountie can go back to Canada as he is now a criminal. That line works in storyline and in real life with the Canadian Mounties threatening to sue WWF over the character. Mountie uses his control techniques as the announcers talk about Savage as Gorilla would do the same thing if that happened to his wife while Heenan says you can always cut a deal with someone. Mountie stays in control then uses a two-handed chokeslam for the win (1:59). After the match, Mountie asks Diamond to say his man but Diamond calls him a jailbird so the Mountie goes nuts.
Thoughts: They continue to get over the “jailbird” chant aimed at The Mountie and talked about Savage.
Jim “The Anvil” Neidhart vs. Dwayne Gill
Neidhart talks about Sgt. Slaughter in an insert promo and calls him scum that got what was coming to him at SummerSlam and promises the same will happen to Heenan. Neidhart beats on Gill as Heenan refers to Neidhart as “Captain Schizo” then Neidhart uses a powerslam for the win (1:45).
Thoughts: Neidhart, with his new gear, is getting some TV squash wins as a singles act but it doesn’t seem too promising.

Barber Shop with guests Ric Flair and Bobby Heenan. Flair talks about coming to the WWF where Hogan is claiming to be the world champion and Roddy Piper claiming to be the “baddest apple on the street” but that has changed with him now here. Flair challenges both men and tells Hogan he’s second best until he beats him and calls himself the real world’s champion. Really just a generic promo from Flair and what made him special elsewhere is not being showcased in the WWF. They are treating him like a big deal but what made him a big deal is being taken away.
Texas Tornado vs. Barry Hardy
Heenan is gloating on commentary over what Flair just said. Tornado works over Hardy as Heenan is still doing the Flair wooing then uses the Tornado Punch to put away Hardy (3:05).
Thoughts: A longish squash match featuring a rapidly declining talent. Most of the focus on commentary was about Flair.
Another plug for the “Bodybuilding Lifestyles” magazine.
The Undertaker w/ Paul Bearer vs. Chris Hawn
Undertaker beats on Hawn and hits a clothesline. We hear from Sid Justice in an insert promo as he calls out Undertaker and Jake Roberts to say that justice will be served. Undertaker uses his ropewalk attack then puts Hawn away with a tombstone (2:31).
Thoughts: They are going hard with the Sid/Undertaker feud.
Next week in action are The Dragon, Nasty Boys, Ted DiBiase, Sid Justice, and Ric Flair. Plus, Legion of Doom as guests on the “Barber Shop” and more!
Final Thoughts: The big news was Flair appearing on the Barber Shop and learning he will be in the ring next week. Beyond that we had standard hype for TV feuds as Challenge remains a show you really do not need to keep up with on most weeks.
