WWF Superstars of Wrestling – September 14th, 1991

By Brian Bayless on May 30, 2018

September 14, 1991

From the Rochester War Memorial in Rochester, NY

Your hosts are Vince McMahon and Roddy Piper. We hear from Piper telling WWF President Jack Tunney that if he has any guts he’s reinstate Randy Savage.

This week, we will have a special interview with Hulk Hogan. In action are The Undertaker, Jim Neidhart, Natural Disasters, and Irwin R. Schyster

The Dragon vs. Paul Perez

The announcers talk about Savage being reinstated as Dragon works over Perez. Dragon hits an atomic drop as we learn of a personality profile about Dragon in this month’s “WWF Magazine.” Piper is now referring to Dragon as Steamboat while Dragon puts away Perez with a flying body press (2:11).

Thoughts: Most of the focus was on Savage possibly being reinstated. No mention of Dragon’s feud with Skinner here as Dragon continues to languish in the midcard.

WWF Magazine with Gene Okerlund. We first have Gene shilling WWF merchandise that can be found at Toys R Us before seeing a replay at what happened during the Savage/Elizabeth wedding reception. We now hear from Jake Roberts with Paul Bearer & The Undertaker as they tell Sid Justice you do not play with the snake without getting bit. After that we hear from Sid as he says Savage will take care of Jake after caring for Elizabeth then promises that justice will be served. Fairly generic promos from both yet they were effective. Pairing Jake with Undertaker & Bearer I thought was really good even if they could have done more with them as a trio. Sid oozes charisma.

Scott Colontonio vs. Greg “The Hammer” Valentine

Valentine beats on Colontonio then softens the leg. Vince asks Piper about Sgt. Slaughter and if Slaughter is thinking he made a mistake but Piper does not think Slaughter was punished enough. Valentine stays in control then uses the figure four for the win (1:35).

Thoughts: More talk about Slaughter and if he has been punished enough. Valentine continues to get wins on TV but is clearly established in the lower midcard.

A solider standing in front of a tank calls out Slaughter for being a traitor then says he got what he deserved at SummerSlam. They are really laying this on to the point where a face turn when he begs for forgiveness is to be expected.

Ross Greenberg vs. The Mountie w/ Jimmy Hart

Mountie beats on Greenberg as Piper makes jokes about Mountie being in jail. However, Piper says The Mountie will not get fooled twice and after that Mountie uses a two-handed chokeslam for the win (1:40). After the match, Mountie screams that they cut the music before asking Greenberg who he is but Greenberg said he is a “jailbird.” The Mountie goes mental and shocks Greenberg before screaming that he is the Mountie.

Thoughts: After spending the night in jail they are trying hard to get a “jailbird” chant directed towards The Mountie.

Irwin R. Schyster vs. Tony Diamond

IRS beats down Diamond as we hear from him in an insert promo running down the Big Bossman. IRS stays in control then puts away Diamond with the Write Off (2:32).

Thoughts: More hype for the IRS/Bossman feud, which is not exactly off to a hot start. The IRS character is not getting over enough to warrant the push.

Gene Okerlund brings out Hulk Hogan to the interview platform, referring to him as the “greatest WWF Champion of all-time.” Hogan first plugs his 1-900 number before talking about the power of Hulkamania. Hogan now refers to Hulkamania as a fairy tale and considers the Hulkamaniacs his friends because they have made everything possible. However, Hogan says every morning he has to wake up and look into the mirror because he always hears what will happen if he ever squared off with Ric Flair. Hogan calls Flair the “cream of the crop” as far as top contenders go and will make it perfectly clear he will accept his challenge anytime, anyplace. Hogan says he needs to know who is the better man and the better champion. This is to set up for a series of Flair/Hogan matches in the future. Hogan did a good job here and it was not his typical “what’cha gonna do” promo as he treated Flair as a legitimate threat.

Brian Donahue & Mike Fury vs. The Natural Disasters w/ Jimmy Hart

The Disasters beat on Fury as Vince believes Jimmy Hart will manage the Tag Team Champions in the near future. Donahue is in as Typhoon hits him with a suplex as the announcers talk about the Natural Disasters and Legion of Doom. Piper then sneaks in a comment about how its as hard to argue matches with Vince than it is with contracts while the Disasters hit a double splash combo on Donahue for the win (3:00). That Piper line was hilarious.

Thoughts: More hype for the LoD/Natural Disasters feud. Fury was a huge dude but really awful in the ring. He was known as “Primo Carnera” in the Eastern Independent scene throughout the decade.

Jim Neidhart defeats Brooklyn Brawler in a match first shown on the 9/7 edition of “Prime Time Wrestling.”

The Undertaker w/ Paul Bearer vs. Bill Pierce

Undertaker ties up Pierce in a tree-of-woe then lands a few kicks. Vince talks about Undertaker being “strange” then sells the disgust over Jake ruining Elizabeth’s wedding night as Undertaker hits Pierce with a tombstone for the win (2:02). After the match, Undertaker shoves Pierce into a bodybag as Vince wonders if that could happen to Sid or Savage.

Thoughts: All the talk of the Jake & Undertaker/Sid & Savage feuds during commentary as this is going to be heavily focused on going forward.

In action next week are British Bulldog, Ted DiBiase, Big Bossman, and Sid Justice in his in-ring debut. Also, Ric Flair as guest on the “Funeral Parlor” and the return of Randy Savage to the broadcast booth with the ruling from Jack Tunney as to whether or not his suspension was overturned.

Final Thoughts: The big news on this show was setting up for next and whether or not Savage will get reinstated so he can get revenge for what happened to Elizabeth. They also had Hogan finally address Ric Flair and are clearly doing something to set up for Sgt. Slaughter’s return. The promotion has a lot going on right now and the angles are exciting and fresh. A good time to be a fan even if business was not exactly thriving.
