- September 8, 1991
From the Erie Civic Center in Erie, PA
We get a new montage here too with the Ultimate Warrior completely removed.
Your hosts are Gorilla Monsoon and Bobby Heenan as Heenan plugs Ric Flair’s appearance this week on “Prime Time Wrestling.”
In action this week are the Natural Disasters and Big Bossman. Plus, Ted DiBiase on the “Barber Shop” and more!
Big Bossman vs. Scott Colontonio
We see an insert of the newest edition of “WWF Magazine” which features an article on Bossman. Colontonio lands a few shots but gets booted down. Bossman gets the crowd behind him as Heenan says Bossman used to pocket change as a meter maid in Georgia. Bossman stays in control before hitting a sidewalk slam for the win (2:31). After the match, Bossman cuffs Colontonio to the ropes before leaving.
Thoughts: No real mention of the IRS/Bossman feud but that is still continuing.
Footage from the Savage/Elizabeth wedding reception first shown on “Superstars of Wrestling.”
Greg “The Hammer” Valentine vs. Bob Bradley
The announcers talk about who knows what would have happened to Elizabeth if Sid Justice was not there to make the save. Flair then says he has three exclusive interviews this Monday on Prime Time with Undertaker, Paul Bearer, and Ric Flair. Valentine clotheslines Bradley then hits some chops in the corner. Bradley comes back with his slo-mo backspring elbow smash in the corner then we get a slugfest. Bradley misses a high knee in the corner then Valentine works the leg and uses the figure four to get the win (2:34).
Thoughts: Just a backdrop for the Wedding Reception fallout and to let us know that Flair himself will be on this week’s Prime Time. I will be recapping that show for those wondering.
Col. Mustafa vs. Bill Pierce
Heenan notes that Sgt. Slaughter is still in seclusion and that his own men cannot even stand him. Pierce starts up a “USA” chant but Mustafa takes him down with a fireman’s carry. Mustafa drops Pierce then we hear from Mustafa & Gen. Adnan in an insert promo telling Slaughter its his turn to retire like General Schwarzkopf. Well, Mustafa couldnt say Schwarzkopf’s name and Heenan got in a joke that the guy he mentioned was a general in the Salvation Army. Mustafa stays in control before using the Camel’s Clutch for the win (2:20).
Thoughts: No idea where Adnan is this week. Not like its a big loss or anything. With the rest of the Triangle of Terror hating Slaughter too its crystal clear they are looking for some sympathy on Slaughter for his babyface turn.
WWF Special Report with Lord Alfred Hayes. It was a replay of last week’s Funeral Parlor with guest Bobby Heenan calling out Hulk Hogan then getting confronted by Roddy Piper.
Paul Perez & Phil Apollo vs. Natural Disasters w/ Jimmy Hart
We hear from the Disasters, Nasty Boys, and Jimmy Hart in an insert promo vowing to take the Tag Titles away from Legion of Doom. The Disasters beat on Apollo then Earthquake puts him away with a sitdown splash (3:23).
Thoughts: The LoD have to look out for both the Natural Disasters and the Nasty Boys now.
The Dragon vs. Brian Donahue
The announcers talk about what happened at the wedding reception as Dragon takes down Donahue. Gorilla says he would not be surprised to see Savage try to get reinstated as a wrestler as Dragon stays in control. Skinner is shown in an insert promo saying Dragon’s fire does not scare him as Heenan says Skinner’s brother played guitar in “Deliverance.” Dragon chops down Donahue before hitting a flying body press for the win (2:22).
Thoughts: More hints at Savage attempting to get reinstated as a wrestler. We also get more hype for the Dragon/Skinner feud.
Barber Shop with guests Ted DiBiase & Sensational Sherri. DiBiase says Virgil was a common peasant when he found him and after stealing his belt Virgil is now just a common thief. DiBiase says Virgil having the Million Dollar Belt is like a peasant given a Mercedes Benz. DiBiase says Virgil’s dream will be a reality soon and the belt will be back around his waist while Virgil is face down in a gutter. This feud will continue.
Ross Greenberg vs. Irwin R. Schyster
Before the match, IRS tells people the economy would improve if people did not cheat on their taxes. IRS immediately beats on Greenberg as Heenan makes jokes about taxes. Big Bossman is shown in an insert promo saying IRS’s accusations are false and wants to see how much heat IRS can take. IRS tosses Greenberg outside then brings him back in where he hits the Write Off for the win (2:43).
Thoughts: Guess they saved the Bossman/IRS feud hype for this match.
Next week in action are the British Bulldog, Skinner, and the Beverly Brothers.
Final Thoughts: The only thing different here than on Superstars was learning that the rest of the Triangle of Terror do not even want Slaughter around. The Savage/Jake feud is the top focus and Flair’s debut on Prime Time was hyped as we can expect the fallout next week on the syndicated shows.
