WWF Wrestling Challenge – July 21st, 1991

In action this week are the Natural Disasters, British Bulldog, and The Mountie. Plus, Randy Savage as guest on the “Barber Shop” and an interview with Sgt. Slaughter.

Texas Tornado vs. Ed Moretti

Moretti shoves Tornado but gets taken down with an arm drag. Tornado follows with a slam as Gorilla wants Heenan to show us his “broadcast journalism” skills. Moretti cheap shots Tornado after a break but Tornado fights back and soon after that hits the Tornado Punch for the win (2:35). Moretti took one hell of a bump off of that move.

Thoughts: Tornado has been a flop so he is now relegated to occasional squash match wins.

WWF Special Report with Lord Alfred Hayes. We are shown the interview with the Triangle of Terror from this past“Superstars of Wrestling”where Sid Justice is named the special guest referee for their SummerSlam match and only wants to make sure that justice is served.

An ad for SummerSlam airs.

Larry Williams vs. The Mountie w/ Jimmy Hart

The Mountie beats on Williams then uses his control techniques as the announcers talk about Sid Justice. Mountie then uses a claw before getting the win with a two-handed chokeslam (1:49). After the match, Mountie cuffs Williams to the ropes then reads him his rights before using his cattle prod then the camera shows a fan holding up a Big Bossman hat.

Thoughts: They are still heavily promoting the Bossman/Mountie feud.

The vignette with Skinner popping out from the swamp airs.

Mike Starr vs. British Bulldog

Heenan gets a dig on McGuirk by saying she is Starr and screaming “she’s missing a tooth!” Heenan’s scoop of the day is that Skinner will help Earthquake get a snake skin jacket. Bulldog hits a pair of slams then a back drop as Heenan continues to make fun of McGuirk. Bulldog now hits a delayed vertical suplex and soon after that hits a running powerslam for the win (1:55).

Thoughts: Most of the focus was on Heenan making fun of McGuirk as Bulldog is back collecting squash match wins.

The Rockers shill WWF Superstars Ice Cream Bars. Might as well since they are doing anything else.

Buddy Wayne vs. The Warlord w/ Slick

Warlord brushes off a few punches before running over Wayne. Warlord then hits a press slam as the announcers talk about the Savage/Elizabeth wedding. Warlord tosses Wayne around before using a full nelson for the win (1:56).

Thoughts: Mostly a backdrop for the announcers to talk about the Savage/Elizabeth wedding.

Barber Shop with guest Randy Savage. Beefcake asks Savage if he is getting cold feet but Savage says you do not get that when you’re in love. Savage says he is getting married in the ring because its his way of returning since he is contractually unable to compete as a wrestler anymore. Savage also said it was fitting to have his marriage take place at SummerSlam.

The message from Vince about drug testing is shown.

SummerSlam Report airs.

Larry Ludden & Bobby Jones vs. The Natural Disasters w/ Jimmy Hart

The Disasters beat on Ludden to start as Gorilla once again chastises Heenan for not having any scoops. The Bushwhackers are shown in an insert promo putting over how Andre the Giant will be in their corner at SummerSlam. The Disasters now beat on Jones until they put him away with the double splash combo (2:34).

Thoughts: Trying to portray an obviously crippled Andre as a threat is almost laughable at this point, sadly, as he can barely move with the aid of two crutches.

In action next week are Hacksaw Jim Duggan, Irwin R. Schyster, The Dragon, Big Bossman, and the Nasty Boys. Also, we will see Jake Roberts’ appearance on the “Funeral Parlor” and more!

Final Thoughts: Not much to see here unless you missed Superstars, which has been a theme of Challenge for a while now.
