WWF Wrestling Challenge – June 30th, 1991

By Brian Bayless on April 30, 2018

June 30, 1991

From the A.S.U. Activities Center in Phoenix, AZ

Your hosts are Gorilla Monsoon, Bobby Heenan, and Jim Neidhart

In action this week are The Undertaker, British Bulldog, Nasty Boys, Beverly Brothers, and Jake Roberts.

Nasty Boys vs. Steve Gatorwolf & Bobby Jones

The Nasties beat on Gatorwolf to start. The announcers talk about the Randy Savage & Elizabeth rumors as Jones now tags into the match. We hear from the Legion of Doom in an insert promo talking about becoming the next Tag Team Champions. Nasty Boys stay in control then put Jones away with a running powerslam/flying elbow drop combo (3:20).

Thoughts: More hype for the Tag Team Title feud and speculation about Savage/Elizabeth.

WWF Special Report with Lord Alfred Hayes. We see the Elizabeth comments from “Prime Time” as Savage promises to reveal his feelings for Elizabeth next week.

Greg “The Hammer” Valentine vs. The Intruder

Valentine lands some chops and elbow smashes as we see the newest edition of “Bodybuilding & Lifestyles” magazine in an insert while Gorilla lists off a few WBF stars. Valentine then suplexes The Intruder and soon after that uses the figure four for the win (2:17).

Thoughts: Valentine is going nowhere as a babyface so the announcers decided to talk about the WBF instead.

The Undertaker w/ Paul Bearer vs. Terry Zeller

Undertaker beats on Zeller in the corner. Heenan says that Undertaker can easily become a champion as Undertaker puts Zeller away with the Tombstone (2:10). After the match, Zeller is stuffed inside of a bodybag.

Thoughts: Heenan’s line about Undertaker becoming a champion would be notable down the line but for now they are getting over the Undertaker/Warrior feud.

Jake “The Snake” Roberts vs. Bill Luger

Jake works the arm as Gorilla notes this is Luger’s WWF debut then teases Heenan for not knowing that. Heenan says he is not concerned with ham-and-eggers like Luger as Jake stays in control. Heenan says there is a new fire burning inside of Jake as Gorilla says that will happen when you lose a pet. Jake then hits a clothesline before the DDT gets the win (2:27). After the match, Jake dumps Damien on top of Luger

Thoughts: They are still pushing the Jake/Earthquake feud.

Texas Tornado tells us he cools off during the Summer with WWF Ice Cream bars.

Barber Shop with guest Irwin R. Schyster. IRS says he is reporting Beefcake for not reporting his tips and that he’s a fraud, just like Roddy Piper. Beefcake tells IRS that he is the only one here that needs a trimming while IRS wants to know why Beefcake cannot afford an entire outfit. Beefcake then says its time to cut back in this economic climate and chases IRS away with his clippers. The dialogue here was terrible but the company is building towards a Piper/IRS feud.

Beverly Brothers w/ Coach vs. Bill Gatlin & Stephen DeLeon

The Beverly Brothers toss around DeLeon to start. We hear from Coach in an insert promo with the Beverly Brothers as he promises to take them to the top. Heenan says the Beverly Brothers are the team of the 90’s as Gatlin is now getting destroyed. The Beverly Brothers stay in control until using the Shaker Heights Spike for the win (3:22). After the match, Coach gets into the ring and does some sit-ups.

Thoughts: There is no real hook or gimmick for the Beverly Brothers and The Coach is not getting them any heat. According to the Beverly Brothers in their shoot interview with RF Video, they were hired after Pat Patterson called them up for a tryout and they went in between tours of Japan. Both guys also added that they had no clue why The Coach was their manager and speculated that it was Vince giving Tolos a favor.

Jim Duggan and The Natural Disasters put over Sid Justice. Jimmy Hart believes Sid will be the third Natural Disaster. Besides putting him over they are also adding intrigue as to whether or not Sid will be heel or face.

British Bulldog vs. Black Demon

Bulldog beats on Demon while showing off his agility. Heenan makes fun of Bulldog’s “Whoopi Goldberg” hairstyle as Bulldog works a chinlock. Bulldog stays in control then uses a running powerslam for the win (2:21).

Thoughts: Not much to speak about this match. Mr. Perfect hurt himself a week or so prior to this airing and that ended the IC Title program with Bulldog.

An ad for SummerSlam airs.

Col. Mustafa w/ Sgt.Slaughter & Gen. Adnan vs. Jerry Stevens

Adnan & Mustafa are in an insert promo crapping on 4th of July. Mustafa beats on Stevens as the announcers plug the games you can win on Hulk Hogan’s Hotline. Slaughter barks out orders then Mustafa finally ends this with the Camel’s Clutch (2:08).

Thoughts: This trio is ice cold at the moment. And it doesnt help that Mustafa is nothing more than an embarrassment inside of the ring.

Next week in action are Mr. Perfect, The Dragon, Ted DiBiase, and the Natural Disasters.

Final Thoughts: Another uneventful installment of Challenge. All of the key stuff is happening on Superstars and Prime Time, which makes Challenge something to watch only when feature matches take place.
