Ring of Honor Supercard of Honor XII – live blog!
By Rick Poehling on April 7, 2018
Howdy!
Alright, for the like 5 of you that may be watching ROH over NXT, I’m liveblogging this one tonight. Reload and give Scott some pageviews every few minutes.
I don’t know if it will work, might, might not, we’ll see. Could suck, could be fun. This will just be stream of consciousness as the card is going. I’m gonna catch Takeover later, but how can I pass up the biggest crowd in ROH history?
Let’s watch some wrestling, shall we?
Ring of Honor: Supercard of Honor XII
– Well, maybe. Ring of Honor’s site is down and so is the Roku channel. This could be…..interesting.
– 7 minutes in, site is still down. This is irritating. I’m skipping NXT, damnit, and they can’t even get their show to load?
– Okay, I’m in! Gresham and Chuck Taylor are working right now. Gresham fires a forearm. He’s so good, but his size is going to hold him back in a lot of ways. Ankelock by Jon! more back and forth, ‘rana roll through by Gresham and he hits the knee, but Taylor gets Sole food, Gresham comes back with a springboard DDT, Taylor responds with an inside cradle for 3. Can’t rate it, didn’t see enough. Looked to be about **3/4, ***, something like that.
– Up next, Tomohiro Ishii vs Punishment Martinez. But first, we’ve got a dude in facepaint and what looks like Punishment’s jacket harassing the announcers. OH JOY, more supernatural bullshit in ROH. STOP THIS RIGHT NOW. Martinez is wearing a mask, takes it off. This should be super fun, Ishii is so good.
– Big ol’ pop for Ishii. As well there should be.
– No Code of Honor. Ishii just clobbers him with forearms to start, the size difference is really pronounced. Ishii has to reach up to strike Martinez. Punishment takes control with elbows and a Falcon Arrow. Ishii gets the suplex to come back, Martinez back with a spinkick to send Ishii outside. Ishii ends up on the floor, Punishment goes for the over the buckle to the floor dive and LANDS ON HIS FUCKING HEAD! JESUS. AND HE POPS BACK UP! Then he goes back in the ring and does it again, this time more of a tope con hilo, he tosses Ishii back in and hits a top rope spinning heel kick for two. Good christ. Punishment should be DEAD.
– More crazy, as Martinez ‘ranas Ishii off the top rope. Ishii is just selling and selling for Punishment here, finally getting a Saito suplex to stop Martinez. Superplex from Ishii gets two and 3/4. Martinez with a choke, but Ishii levels him with a lariat for another close near-fall. They trade shots, headbutt by Ishii, big roundhouse kick by Martinez, South of Heaven chokeslam by Punishment! 1, 2, 3!! Holy shit, didn’t expect that one! They just traded the big moves out there, but they made it work. ***1/4
– I genuinely don’t know how Punishment didn’t break his neck on that dive.
– Adam Page is out. He’s up against Kota Ibushi next. People cheer for Page, but Ibushi gets a crazy pop…..and my stream goes out again. This is getting REALLY fucking annoying.
– Okay, I’m back in. Page blocks the Golden Triangle moonsault, goes for the Shooting Star off the apron, lands on his feet, Ibushi gets sent to the rail, Page tries to moonsault him off the barricade, but Ibushi jumps up and hits a german suplex from the barricade to the floor. And now we have a second person HITTING THEIR DAMN HEAD, as Page rotates over and takes a sick bump.
– STOP LANDING ON YOUR HEADS, GUYS!
– Ibushi hits the Golden Triangle this time and rolls Page in for two. Page comes back with a Dudebuster for a VERY close two. Out to the apron where Ibushi teases a piledriver, but Page escapes with a back body drop, sending Ibushi to the floor, Page follows with a BEAUTIFUL moonsault (his hangtime was nuts), then the flipping clothesline back in the ring for two.
– Very nice reversal sequence by the guys gets a bunch of kickouts and a ‘fight forever’ chant. They slug it out from their knees, then to their feet, Ibushi begs for more, slap fight! Ibushi hits the Golden Star powerbomb for two, then a straight jacket German for two, then the Goye Knee to finish. Don’t know how the first part of the match was, but the second half was great. Problem is, Page just isn’t on the level of Ibushi and it showed. *** from what I saw, but was probably a bit higher.
– Women of Honor Final is up next. Kelly Klein against Sumie Sakai. I’m gonna take a smoke break, as I think it’s clear that Klein is going to win. Hey, Daffney is ringside! Cool. Be right back.
– I’m back. Sakai with a swinging Fisherman’s DDT. Klein fires off a German suplex. The women from the tournament come out to ringside to support Sumie as they slug it out, won by Sakai. Klein kicks her down to stop the comeback, however.
– Northern lights suplex gets two for Kelly. Sakai with a Fisherman’s Buster and she goes for the moonsault, misses it, but hits an awkward DDT….for the pin? Eh, okay. She’s been with the company forever, that’s cool. Ending sequence was utter shit, though, and I don’t know that I would have ended Klein’s streak like that. ** from what I saw.
– 6-man tag titles are up next. Ladder match time. Flip Gordon is out first, then the crowd goes nuts as the music of the Young Bucks are out. Never thought I would say this about the Bucks, but please don’t die, guys. Daniels, Kazarian, and Sky are out next as SoCal Uncensored.
– If anyone sells a move for more than a minute, I’ll almost be disappointed. This is gonna be a spotfest to end all spotfests.
– Doesn’t take too long for everyone to end up outside the ring through various shenanigans, as Sky hits a tope con hilo onto both Bucks, who happen to be holding a ladder. Partner miscommunication across the board and we end up with Daniels and Matt on the ladder, they go down, now it’s Nick and Sky, Sky knocks Nick down, Gordon pulls Scorpio down. Daniels ends up alone on the ladder, then we get a neato sequence where Flip springs off the top rope to the ladder, knocks Chris off, then Frankie does the same thing from the other side and brings Gordon down with a cutter off the top of the ladder.
– The Bucks are back in and dominate, then do an assisted 450 with Flip onto Daniels, who’s draped on a ladder. That was pretty cool. Kaz stops that by just throwing a ladder at the Bucks. He goes for the Terry Funk ladder spin, but Flip avoids it and kicks Kaz down, and we get a triple superkick onto Frankie. Swanton by Nick onto Sky, who’s on a ladder being held by Matt.
– Don’t worry, he sells it for less than a minute as all six guys are firing at each other again.
– They abuse Flip in the corner, setting him on top and having Sky ‘rana him off. They pin Flip under the ladder and attempt to climb, but the Bucks stop it. SoCal retakes control, but Flip makes the comeback, clearing the ring and hitting a tope con hilo onto Daniels. The Bucks back in, but they can’t complete double teams because Matt’s back is hurt too badly.
– They finally get it together and destroy Daniels with a faceplant on the ladder. Nick climbs, Sky stops that. Matt climbs, Sky stops that with a shot to the back. Sharpshooter with the crossface assist by the Bucks and Sky taps, but that doesn’t mean anything as more ladders end up in the ring. Kaz throws a ladder at Nick on the top of another ladder to knock him off.
– Flip goes for a springboard from the turnbuckle to the post into a moonsault. It goes…..badly. He kind of saves it before crashing to the ground. Nick shows him how it’s down by jumping from ladder to ladder into a dive on the outside.
– The Bucks are alone in the ring and they start to climb…..but the Kingdom hits the ring. Joy. They destroy Flip and the Bucks, then encourage SoCal to climb, but they turn on SoCal and toss them.
– This match is a mess, by the way.
– Anyway, now it looks like TK is going to climb, which conceptually wouldn’t mean anything, but now the Bucks, Daniels and Kaz are back in and they pick up the ladder and dump TK onto the rest of the Kingdom outside. Back to fighting amongst themselves.
– Everyone ends up on the top of three ladders in the middle of the ring, everyone goes down…..as does the stream yet again. Good fucking god.
Okay, guys. The stream has gone down again, for the 3rd time, and the website is currently down as well. I can’t make anything work, and I’m apparently not the only one. I’ll hopefully be able to return to this later, but for now I have to take a break before I destroy a piece of technology that costs money. I’ll be back with the rest of the show when I can.
– Okay, we’re back again. Finally got back in, the Roku channel appears to be useless, but the website finally loaded after being down for the last half-hour. Hopefully this holds up through the last three matches after the tag title match.
– I’ve missed most of this, but Briscoes vs Tanahashi/Lethal looked good from what I saw. Impossible to rate, though. SoCal retained the 6-man titles, BTW. I know that was necessary for all of you to know before you lose your mind.
– Kenny King and Silas Young are up next, Last Man Standing.
– But first, Austin Aries and his armful of belts are out to say a few words. He once again issues a challenge to whoever wins the TV title, then goes to sit at commentary.
– I don’t have much to say about this match. It’s okay. I’m just ready for this feud to be over, to be honest.
– Cool spot as Silas gets Misery to drop Kenny on the apron for an 8-count.
– Plunder in the ring, and Kenny gets the Royal Flush onto a trash can for a 9-count. King sets a table up on the outside, telling people to move, prompting the crowd to give us a rendition of “Move, bitch, get out the way”. CLASSY.
– The Bruiser comes out to save Silas from being put through the table, Kenny fights him off but Silas attacks from behind. He gets out a ladder (why? There’s already a damn table set up!) and attempts to whip King into it, but Kenny reverses and belly-to-bellys him on the ladder. Kenny goes up, shooting star press puts Silas through the table!
– They both struggle to their feet on the outside….but something has Kenny’s feet from underneath the ring! Silas staggers to his feet as King can’t move…..and he finally gets his legs out from underneath the ring as the ref counts ten. And Kenny’s legs are tied together as the Bruiser pokes his head out from underneath the ring, and we have a NEW Ring of Honor TV champion.
– That finish sucked all kinds of dick. Anyway, Silas and the Bruiser beat down King after the match, Aries makes the save and grabs the belt. Whatever. **3/4
– Up next, Cheeseburger! WHY?
– He’s out with his new tag partner, Eli, and ‘Burger has fully embraced his inner Village person, to say the least. My goodness. Their opponents will be the Dawgs.
– And the Dawgs beat down both of them before the bell, injuring Eli’s knee. Bully Ray comes out and tells ‘Burger that he needs to find a partner or forfeit, so he asks Bully to be his partner. You know, because no one else will do it, because ‘Burger sucks balls.
– So Bully agrees and they beat down the Dawgs, Wazzup drop, Bully tells ‘Burger to get the tables…..and then chokeslams Cheeseburger. GO BULLY RAY! He cuts a promo on Cheeseburger, calling his generation selfish, spoiled, entitled, then calls out Will Ospreay, Flip Gordon, and ‘that nobody’ Ricochet! They’ve destroyed the wrestling industry! They don’t belong here! Joe Koff comes down to the ring and Bully taunts him, calling him an old bastard and saying that this is the reason that the business sucks, because he signs idiots like this! PREACH ON!
– Flip Gordon comes down to the ring to save ‘Burger, but Bully Ray threatens to piledrive Cheeseburger and get the show shut down before the main events. He tells Joe that he’s a WWE hall of famer (drawing boos), then powerbombs Cheeseburger and leaves the ring.
– Well, that was interesting. On the one hand, complete demolition of Cheeseburger (yay!) but a heel turn by Bully that may or may not be good for storylines. We’ll see.
– Graphic for Kenny/Cody. Holy shit, Dalton and Marty are main-eventing tonight? Cool! Fun tidbit – according to one of the Bucks in a recent interview, Cody’s role was supposed to be played by Adam Cole, but Cole left and Cody got the spot. I’d say he’s done a bang-up job with it.
– Cody is out first, with Brandi and Bernard, the Business bear. Cody is really channeling his inner Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow out there.
– Kenny comes out to the loudest pop of the evening without question.
– With them not main-eventing….will Omega do the job?
– Bernard interferes early and gets tossed. His head gets knocked off, but we can’t see who it is. Back in the ring, Cody hits some moves and does some pushups.
– Cody sets up for Shattered Dreams, even does the full Goldust pose, gets a running start….then stops and flips off the crowd with both hands. Bless you, young Rhodes.
– Cody asks for the ring, then kicks Omega in the balls when the ref’s back is turned. Brandi is tremendous at ringside, by the way.
– They fight on the floor, with Cody taunting the ringside fans and stealing one of their beers. Back in and Omega makes his comeback, sends Cody to the floor and hits him with the Rise of the Terminator.
– V-Trigger by Kenny, they trade reversals, snapdragon by Kenny! Again! Crowd wants a third, but Cody reverses and hits the Disaster kick for two. Another V-Triggers hits, but Cody escapes the One-Winged Angel attempt and hooks a figure-four. That’s on for awhile before Kenny reverses, Cody breaks.
– To the apron where Cody attempts to CrossRhodes Kenny through a table on the floor. He fails, but still manages to suplex him stomach-first onto said table.
– Back in for another V-Trigger from Kenny, Brandi gets up on the apron. Cody goes over to her, Kenny charges with a V-Trigger, Cody moves, BRANDI goes through the table! Nice bump, Brandi. Kenny goes to check on her and then comes back in the ring, Cody is ready, CrossRhodes! 1, 2, NO! 2.99999!
– Cody whips Kenny with the weight belt and goes up, moonsault misses! V-Triggers galore from Omega and he looks to finish with the Angel, but Cody reverses to a VERTEBREAKER! 1, 2, 2.999999 kickout! Crowd wants ‘fight forever’ now, and I’m getting there.
– Just as I say that, the ref gets bumped and both guys wipe the other out on crossbodies. Cue the Bucks. They load up the double superkick after thinking about it, looks like they’re going for Cody…..but he moves and the Bucks hit Kenny! CrossRhodes! Cody covers…..3! CODY WINS!
– ****. Just a bit under Cody/Okada for me. The story continues, I guess. Match was pretty good.
– Kenny shoves away the Bucks and leaves as the crowd lets the Bucks know they fucked up.
– Main event time, here comes Marty! Scurll is dressed head to toe in gold, and he somehow makes it work. This man is a god. Dalton gets the big entrance, and I’m ready for this one.
– Code of Honor is refused by Scurll, as we see Nick Aldis in the crowd.
– Nice chain wrestling sequence starts us off, we get a ‘roll camera’ into the middle finger from Scurll. Castle returns it, but putting a middle finger in front of Marty is like waving a red cape in front of a bull, and Dalton has to slug Marty down to avoid getting his finger broken.
– Deadlift suplex by Castle, but they end up outside and Marty tricks Dalton into clotheslining the post. Marty slams him on the floor and goes after the Boys as we see that Castle is bleeding from the nose. Back in, Marty crushes the elbow and goes to work on it.
– Castle mounts a brief comeback, but Scurll stops that and goes back to working the elbow. Dalton frees himself and hits a few suplexes, but Scurll tosses him to end that. He goes over to the ropes, but Castle pulls him out and hits a German on the floor.
– Marty comes back, sending Dalton to the rail, then a tornado DDT off the apron. This is really good stuff, both guys are selling really well.
– Superplex by Scurll, then a superkick. That sends Dalton to the floor, and after a brief fight around the ring, Scurll backdrops him onto the entrance stairs.
– Scurll hits the Ghostbuster (ushigoroshi) for two and Castle rolls out again. Marty follows and sends Dalton to the barricade, then Aldis passes Marty some cutters from the front row. Back in, Scurll uses the cutters to take off the buckle pad.
– Dalton avoids Marty and fires away, sends Marty to the apron with stomps, then hits the deadlift German to bring Scurll back in. Scurll manages to kick Dalton in the head and covers for…..3? Oh, Castle forgot to kick out in time and the ref just stopped the count. Come on, guys.
– Marty goes looking for toys under the ring, finds his powder. He goes back in, but Castle kicks the powder back into his face! Marty is blind, the ref goes to check on him, Marty breaks his fingers! He does it again! Dalton picks Scurll up, Bangarang!
– Ref goes to count, 1, he pulls up! It hurts too much to count! The ref is helped to the back as Marty takes the opportunity to mercilessly beat Castle with the umbrella. New ref comes out as Scurll hits the Ghostbuster, 1, 2, no! Well, it was like an 8-count, but the ref had to get to the ring.
– Undeterred, Scurll slaps on the chickenwing, Dalton reaches for the ropes, Marty grabs the fingers and breaks them, reapplies the chickenwing. Dalton flips him over to break it.
– Scurll starts stomping on Castle’s head to get a stoppage, but Dalton is able to respond. Scurll throws superkicks, but Castle picks him out of nowhere and hits the 2nd Bangarang! 1, 2, 3! Dalton retains!
– ***3/4. Good action, but a lot of mat work and not for everyone.
That’s all, folks! I wish I had more to say, but the streaming problems meant that I missed over an hour of the show, so that’s my thoughts. If you watched or hung out tonight, thanks! See you down the road.
As always, thanks for reading this thing I wrote,
