WWF Superstars of Wrestling – May 11th, 1991
By Brian Bayless on April 5, 2018
May 11, 1991
From the Omaha Civic Auditorium in Omaha, NE
Your hosts are Vince McMahon and Randy Savage. We are shown a clip of Roddy Piper in the locker room as he dedicates his match against Rick Martel to his mother.
Also in action this week are The Undertaker, Big Bossman, Sgt. Slaughter, and The Dragon.
The Bushwhackers vs. Brian Costello & Doug Wallen
The Bushwhackers beat on Costello to start. We hear from Power & Glory with Slick in an insert promo as they promise to end the Bushwhackers’ misery once and for all. Wallen tags in and the Bushwhackers quickly put him away with a double gutbuster (2:08).
Thoughts: More hype for the Bushwhackers/Power & Glory feud.
WWF Update with Gene Okerlund. We now see Slick trying to court Andre the Giant. Slick pulls up in a limo and says all of his guys have their own limo but Andre shoves Slick in the trunk and tells the driver to head towards New Jersey. Expect another manager attempting to woo Andre next week.
Sgt. Slaughter w/ Gen. Adnan & Col Mustafa vs. Kevin Kruger
Slaughter beats the crap out of Slaughter then hits a gutbuster. Vince says that Koko B. Ware will be on “Prime Time Wrestling” as Slaughter gets the win with a Camel’s Clutch (1:22). After the match, Mustafa comes in and puts Kruger in the Camel’s Clutch then Slaughter comes over to stomp away.
Thoughts: An easy win for Slaughter as the announcers also took this time to plug Prime Time.
Another ad for the “WrestleMania: History and Heroes” Hot Ticket PPV.
Irwin R. Schyster tells us about crooked WWF stars in the same promo from last week’s “Wrestling Challenge.”
Big Bossman vs. Dan Johnson
Bossman uppercuts Johnson after getting cheap-shotted. Vince plugs the cover of “WWF Magazine” that talks about WrestleMania VII as Bossman hits a sidewalk slam for the win (0:45). After the match, The Nasty Boys run out to attack Bossman with Jimmy Hart cheering from behind. They now cuff Bossman to the ropes then Hart waves down The Mountie, who strolls down the aisle with his cattle prod. Mountie then makes fun of Bossman for not being law enforcement and shocks him before telling the Nasty Boys to attack. Mountie then tells Bossman he is an International law officer before shocking him a few more times and says he always gets his man.
Thoughts: They finally added some heat to this angle with the sneak attack on Bossman. The attack itself was great and Jacques embracing the Mountie gimmick makes it more enjoyable to watch.
The Dragon vs. Ricky Rice
Vince reminds Savage that he lost to Dragon at WrestleMania III as a way to hype the Hot Ticket PPV. Dragon lands a few chops to start. Rice gets a nearfall with a sunset flip but Dragon fights back and puts Rice away with a flying body press (2:01).
Thoughts: The referenced Dragon’s past, back when he wasnt stuck with a lower card gimmick. Reminding fans of WrestleMania III likely made then wonder why they switched him up in the first place.
WBF star Jim Quinn says he is pumped for the WBF Championship. How original.
Funeral Parlor with guests Mr. Perfect & Bobby Heenan. Both men ask Bearer for a casket to take care of their “bulldog” problem. Bearer gives them a small casket as Heenan says its perfect. A forgettable segment. The dog puns in this feud were mostly embarrassing to be honest and its not catching on with the fans.
“The Model” Rick Martel vs. Roddy Piper
Martel makes fun of Piper’s fashion then taunts the fans. He tries a cheap shot but Piper was ready. Piper beats on Martel and sends him outside with a clothesline. Piper hits a double axe handle off of the apron but comes up lame. Martel tries to attack but Piper sends him into the post. We hear from Ted DiBiase & Sherri in an insert promo as they tell Piper he should have kept his crutch. Martel rakes the eyes then targets Piper’s injured knee. Piper tries to fight back but his knee gives out on a suplex attempt. Martel chokes out Piper on the mat as the crowd chants “Roddy.” Martel comes off the top but Piper punches him in the gut. Piper then crotches Martel on the top rope and wraps his bandage around Martel’s throat and drags him around. He now hangs Martel over the rope then brings Martel inside and soon after that puts him away with a small package (5:09) **1/4.
Thoughts: Good TV match. The story of Piper battling through a knee injury worked and Martel losing makes sense since he will be leaving the company for a while, returning in the Fall.
The Undertaker vs. George Anderson
Undertaker catches Anderson with a chokeslam as Vince tells us that Bossman is pissed off in the dressing room. The Undertaker then puts Anderson away with a tombstone then shoves him into a bodybag (0:47). Undertaker then carries Anderson backstage.
Thoughts: Quick win for the Undertaker as they are getting over the Bodybag Gimmick, which will lead to Bodybag matches against the Ultimate Warrior around the house show circuit.
Next week in action are British Bulldog, Power & Glory, and Irwin R. Schyster. Plus, the featured match of Demolition Smash vs. Ultimate Warrior. We hear comments from both men to close out the show.
Final Thoughts: Fun show this week. We had a hot angle and featured match and that alone was a treat back in these days. They are continuing the Andre stuff and continuing to plug upcoming guests on Prime Time and the WBF Championship. The WBF stuff will be in overdrive until the event takes place so prepare to see a lot about that in the coming weeks.
