Let me preface this by saying I have absolutely no clue how the wrestling business works or if what I am about to ask is even legally possible between two companies. People in the comments section please be gentle…
So TNA/Impact has been incredibly beneficial to WWE. They’ve brought in a ton of guys that the company has groomed for years. Styles, Joe, Roode, Eric Young, and EC3. Eli Drake could very well be the next one. Impact has also kept Lashley in the spotlight in recent years and will be showing up on WWE television any day now.
That being said, could an offer be put on the table that has the WWE purchasing the tape library while still allowing Anthem to continue using the library? In exchange for this generous offer by WWE, Anthem signs a working agreement that gives WWE first access to any talent. They pretty much already have this but this would guarantee it.
– WWE gets a valuable tape library for DVD/Network. They would own past and any future content from TNA/Impact
– Anthem gets a cash infusion while still being able to use past/future footage for their own network
– WWE gets a promotion on national television to development talent for them
– Anthem has the WWE machine behind them with negotiations with Pop TV or any future TV deals. It’s incredibly beneficial for them to help Impact stay on national television.
Seems kinda like a win-win situation, no?
I mean, I don’t see any legal issues with it, but there’s not much in it for WWE. The TNA tape library isn’t worth THAT much outside of getting some extra Angle/AJ/Joe footage they don’t already have. The value would come after TNA finally died and they could do a “Death of TNA” DVD set and recoup their costs. It’d be more likely that WWE would do that with a group like ROH who isn’t a direct threat to them.
