WWF Superstars of Wrestling – March 30th, 1991

By Brian Bayless on March 16, 2018

March 30, 1991

From the Pensacola Civic Center in Pensacola, FL

Your hosts are Vince McMahon, Roddy Piper, and Randy Savage. The show opens with the Hulk Hogan USO Tour montage ending with a shot of him holding the World Heavyweight Title. Savage tells us he will the be WWF Broadcasting Champion while Piper rants about Ted DiBiase and what he did to him at WrestleMania.

The show starts off with the same WrestleMania Update segment we saw on the 3/26 edition of “Prime Time Wrestling.” It focused on Sgt. Slaughter throwing a fireball at Hulk Hogan’s face in the locker room after their match at WrestleMania VII.

Bob Holly & Mike Sample vs. The Bushwhackers

The Bushwhackers are shown in an insert promo holding flowers and talking about Springtime. It ends with them eating the flowers. We see Bob Holly in his first WWF appearance as a TV jobber. Samples also wrestled as Leatherface in the USWA and then for other promotions. The Bushwhackers beat on Sample to start. Holly tags and is hit with the battering ram before The Bushwhackers get the win with a double gutbuster (2:18).

Thoughts: At this point The Bushwhackers are just an opening act. At least the crowd reacts well to them in that role.

The Mountie w/ Jimmy Hart vs. Major Yates

Mountie attacks Yates before the bell. We then see the Big Bossman in an insert promo telling Mountie to be a “law man” instead of a law breaker. Mountie taunts the crowd then hits a two-handed chokeslam before using the Carotid Control Technique for the win (1:26). After the match, Mountie cuffs Yates and shocks him after saying he is under arrest.

Thoughts: They are going with a Bossman/Mountie program now since WrestleMania has ended.

Vince plugs the newest edition of “Bodybuilding Lifestyles” magazine with Gary Strydom on the cover.

British Bulldog vs. Doug Vines

Bulldog and Vines lockup as Vince tells us Brutus Beefcake will be returning to the WWF. Vince adds that Beefcake went through major surgery on his face as the result of a boating accident and there are rumors he is opening up a barber shop. Davey takes control as we see him in an insert promo showing off his dog, Winston. Davey grabs a chinlock then a corner clothesline before hitting a running powerslam for the win (2:36). Vince then speculates Bulldog might be the next Intercontinental Champion.

Thoughts: With news of Beefcake returning to the WWF that means the masked character he had been portraying is now dropped. Bulldog vs. Perfect is the new Intercontinental Title program since Bret Hart, who was originally slotted as the challenger, declined because he did not want to lose the feud because it would hurt his singles career.

Funeral Parlor with Paul Bearer. He talks about respecting the deceased as The Undertaker’s theme continues to play. Bearer said everyone dies and will one day face the pallbearer and does not know why the WWF is scared to come on his show. This was brief but really just a preview of what to expect on the show going forward.

Power & Glory w/ Slick vs. John Allen & Dale Wolfe

Power & Glory beat on Wolfe to start. Allen tags in and does not fare any better then Roma hits a few elbow drops and covers with his foot for the win (3:12).

Thoughts: Power & Glory need to find something else to do since the LoD beat them in under a minute at WrestleMania.

Savage talks about the 6/15 WBF event as we see another shot of the Strydom on “Bodybuilding Lifestyles” magazine. Expect a lot of hype for this going forward.

Brooklyn Brawler vs. The Dragon

Ricky Steamboat makes is in ring return after more than three years. The lights go out when Dragon hits the ring so he can blow fire. Dragon hits a bunch of strikes then heads up top for a flying chop before finishing Brawler off with a flying body press (1:58).

Thoughts: Having Steamboat return in this role is really a waste. The fire breathing stuff is a lower card gimmick and Steamboat is much better than that role.

We now see a vignette for Irwin R. Scheyster, or IRS for short. He talks about how to deduct charitable contributions but that we do it for greed instead of being from the heart because you pay less taxes. IRS says deducting for charity is cheating and not allowed. And IRS is of course played by Mike Rotunda, returning to the WWF after four years.

Col. Mustafa’s debut that was first shown on the 3/26 edition of “Prime Time Wrestling.”

Next week in action are Big Bossman, Jake Roberts, Ted DiBiase, The Rockers, and Mr. Perfect. Plus, The Undertaker as guest on “The Funeral Parlor” and more!

Final Thoughts: We saw the first IRS vignette and if you missed “Prime Time Wrestling” then you got to see the fireball incident. Other than that it was a dull show as in the coming weeks they’ll focus more on the post–Mania plans.
