WWF Prime Time Wrestling – March 26, 1991
By Brian Bayless on March 15, 2018
March 26, 1991
From Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, NV
Your hosts are Vince McMahon and Bobby Heenan
This is billed as the “WrestleMania Celebration” with guests Ted DiBiase, Randy Savage & Elizabeth, and Koko B. Ware
Heenan is drinking as Vince tells us WrestleMania was seen by the largest PPV audience of all-time. Vince also tells us that Hulk Hogan is now champion as Heenan makes a joke about Hogan being the “toast of the town” as that angers Vince for reasons we will see in just a bit.
WrestleMania Update with Gene Okerlund. We also learn that WrestleMania VII will be available on Coliseum Home Video on April 11th. Okerlund goes over the results of the top matches and we get some still photos of the top matches. Hogan’s victory celebration after the match is shown and we get an extended version of that. However, we see Okerlund follow Hogan backstage and into his dressing room but when Hogan opens the door he gets a fireball in his face courtesy of Sgt. Slaughter, who then beats on Hogan with a chair. Okerlund lets us know that the war has just begun. So, the Slaughter/Hogan will in fact continue.
Hacksaw Jim Duggan vs. Rick Saxon
This match was from the 3/12 “Wrestling Challenge” tapings in Biloxi, MS. The crowd gets behind Duggan, who spends a lot of time pumping them up. Duggan beats on Saxon before tossing him outside as that causes Lord Alfred to laugh. Duggan heads back in and catches Saxon with a slam before the Three Point Stance gets the win (2:33). After the match, Duggan leads the crowd in a “USA” chant.
Thoughts: Duggan is now being sent out to beat jobbers and drum up “USA” chants. Without the war going on you have to wonder what his role would have been.
Heenan is flanked by two women that were apparently given to him by Ted DiBiase. After the break, DiBiase comes out and tells us that Virgil always needed someone to lean on then tells us the only reason he lost at WrestleMania was due to Piper. DiBiase calls Piper a “cripple on a crutch” then leaves to “break the bank.”
Big Bossman defeats Hercules by disqualification from the 1/21 Madison Square Garden show.
Mike Casey & Bob Bradley vs. Legion of Doom
This match also aired on the 3/31 edition of “Wrestling Challenge.” Hawk beats on Bradley to start. The announcers say that the LoD are the #1 contenders then we hear from Nasty Boys with Jimmy Hart as they taunt LoD with the belts. Casey tags in and gets destroyed then the LoD put him away with the Doomsday Device (2:27).
Thoughts: And now the LoD appear to be the ones that will feud with the Nasty Boys as they try and capture the Tag Team Titles.
The Berzerker w/ Mr. Fuji vs. John Allen
The Viking was trademarked for something else so Vince changed the name to The Berzerker. This is also from the 3/12 “Wrestling Challenge” tapings in Biloxi, MS. The Berzerker destroys Allen to start. He takes him down with a big boot then yells “huss” while holding out his pain. Fuji tells Berzerker to inflict more pain and he does until tossing Allen outside and winning by countout (2:26). After the match, Berzerker flies out with a slingshot splash then runs back inside and falls down on his back after running the ropes.
Thoughts: New name and The Berzerker is a crazier version of The Viking. John Nord, who played the character, hated it and thought it was dumb. The crowds seemed to agree with him on that as they were not reacting. Several years later this could have been a cult character but its too out there for 1991.
Paul Roma defeats Shane Douglas from the 1/21 Madison Square Garden show.
Next week, the show will film in Venice Beach, CA and feature WBF star Mike Christian, The Nasty Boys, and Hulk Hogan. I will not be reviewing that but expect to see a lot of WBF mentions going forward.
Hart Foundation defeat Earthquake & Dino Bravo from the 3/15 Madison Square Garden show.
Vince and Heenan sit down with Savage & Elizabeth. Savage is in a great mood then Vince talks about Sherri attacking him after his loss at WrestleMania VII then how he almost hit Elizabeth by accident. Savage said he never hit anyone then talks about his highs and lows then is not ashamed to admit Elizabeth came to his rescue. Heenan interrupts to ask Elizabeth what made her come to WrestleMania as Savage thinks its a great question. Heenan thought Elizabeth came to rub it in when Savage lost. Vince then tells Savage despite one career ending another one will open up. Some foreshadowing there and we will see what he is talking about very soon.
Sgt. Slaughter is in the ring. He yells at the crowd then talks about ruling the WWF before introducing someone new in his ranks, Col. Mustafa. Of course, Mustafa is none other than the Iron Shiek. This segment was shown on the 3/30 edition of “Superstars of Wrestling.”
Col. Mustafa w/ Sgt. Slaughter & Gen. Adnan vs. Billy Burke
Mustafa beats down Burke and hits a back suplex before the Camel’s Clutch gets the win (0:56). Mustafa then tosses Burke outside so Slaughter can use the riding crop. Mustafa then kicks Burke a few more times before tossing him back out.
Thoughts: Sheik was a bloated mess at this time. He could barely move and everything he did looked awful. This is just watering down the Slaughter gimmick more than anyhing.
Back at the table with Savage & Elizabeth. Savage promises to dance with Elizabeth as Vince reminds them how everyone was crying after seeing them reunite. Savage then yells “oh yeah!” into the mic before they dance on stage. Savage was just elated to be back with Elizabeth.
Kato defeats Shawn Michaels from the 3/15 Madison Square Gardenshow.
The show ends with Heenan losing everything at the blackjack table.
Final Thoughts: They had more exclusive stuff here in terms of angle advancement than on previous editions of Prime Time. The new format will continue to do so going forward. We saw the fireball for the first time and know now the Tag Team title program. Also, we should expect a new career from Savage.
