WWF Superstars of Wrestling – February 2nd, 1991

By Brian Bayless on February 18, 2018

February 2, 1991

From the Von Braun Civic Center in Huntsville, AL

Your hosts are Roddy Piper and Vince McMahon

This week, we will find out the main event of WrestleMania VII. Also, we will see highlights of Sgt. Slaughter vs. Jim Duggan from “The Main Event” and Mr. Perfect defends the Intercontinental Title against Texas Tornado.

We see Mr. Perfect backstage getting fanned of with a towel by Heenan. Perfect tells Heenan he’ll remain the champion. Now, the camera shows Tornado curling dumbbells while saying “nobody is perfect.”

Big Bossman vs. Jeff Sword

Vince puts over Hulk Hogan’s USO Tour appearances as Bossman beats on Sword. Bossman is shown in an insert promo saying he has destroyed all but one Heenan Family member and that’s Mr. Perfect. Bossman says Perfect has to serve hard time. He stays in control then puts Sword away with a sidewalk slam (1:26). After the match, Bossman cuffs Sword to the ropes as Vince is certain Bossman will keep an eye on the Intercontinental Title match.

Thoughts: Bossman told us his reason for going after Mr. Perfect and Vince pretty much telegraphed the finish of the Intercontinental Title match.

Clips from “The Main Event” where WWF President Jack Tunney names Hulk Hogan as Sgt. Slaughter’s opponent at WrestleMania VII.

Demolition w/ Mr. Fuji vs. Pez Whatley & Mike Wallace

Crush beats on Whatley to start. Whatley jumps on Crush’s back and uses a sleeper but is backed into the corner. Vince once again plugs “Bodybuilding Lifestyles” magazine, specifically an article about staying “psyched” as Demolition puts Wallace away with the Decapitation (1:48).

Thoughts: Demolition are just an afterthought now as Vince once again plugged the bodybuilding magazine.

Sean Mooney is in the Event Center. Davey Boy Smith calls out The Warlord and Dino Bravo by saying he will match their strength. Now, we hear from Dino Bravo with Jimmy Hart. Bravo refers to himself in the third person and says no one can over power him and promises he has a plan for 1991.

William Ford vs. The Undertaker w/ Brother Love

Undertaker overpowers Ford with ease. We then hear from Brother Love tells us that death is inevitable and calls out Tugboat as Undertaker promises to hit him with a tombstone. Undertaker stays in control then puts Ford away with a tombstone (1:47). After the match, Undertaker dumps rose pedals on top of Ford.

Thoughts: They are now setting up for a Undertaker/Tugboat feud. Tugboat would no longer be aligned with Hogan as Hogan vs. Earthquake in stretcher matches would headline house shows for the next month.

Mooney is back in the Event Center. The Legion of Doom tell us they are going to the top. The Warlord is with Slick, who tells us all Warlord is the most talented in the WWF and a future champion.

Highlights from the Duggan vs. Slaughter match and Hogan’s promo that closed “The Main Event.”

Shane Douglas vs. Dale Wolfe

Piper talks about Douglas’ Cinderella story in the Royal Rumble. We then hear from Douglas in an insert promo as he was proud of his performance in the Rumble match and says he is here to stay and looking to get to WrestleMania. Douglas works over Wolfe then puts him away with a flying crossbody (1:06).

Thoughts: This was one of Douglas’s last televised matches of his WWF run. He took time off to be with his sick father then returned briefly in the Summer before leaving.

Clips of Virgil turning on DiBiase at the Royal Rumble.

Intercontinental Title Match: Mr. Perfect (c) w/ Bobby Heenan vs. Texas Tornado

Tornado knocks Perfect outside then grabs the belt. Tornado drops Perfect with a right hand before giving the belt to the referee. Tornado yells at the camera to show how Perfect is not in fact perfect. Tornado misses a charge and rams his shoulder against the post. Perfect then removes a turnbuckle pad but Tornado blocks a turnbuckle smash and fires away before sending Perfect into the steel. Heenan runs backstage as Tornado beats on Perfect but we then see Bossman bring Heenan back out and cuffs his arm. Tornado eats boot on a charge then Perfect runs out and dropkicks Bossman into the steps. Tornado comes out and beats on Perfect then rolls in to get the win via countout (3:40) *1/2. Bossman raises Perfect’s hand.

Thoughts: Decent action while it lasted. The result was predictable based off of Vince’s comments in the opening match. They have now ended the Perfect/Tornado feud with both men on to other storylines, which is why we got this finish.

Mooney is back in the Event Center. Mr. Fuji is with The Orient Express and puts over their training. Tanaka promises that 1991 is their year.

We cut to Gene Okerlund in the Event Center for some breaking news. Okerlund lets us know their is an unconfirmed report that Ultimate Warrior and Randy Savage will put their careers on the line in a match at WrestleMania VII. Savage actually ended up injuring his thumb and required pins to be placed at a show in Normal, IL on 1/30. It was also reported around this time in the “Wrestling Observer Newsletter” that Savage would lose the match, end up in the booth only to return in the ring months later.

Next week in action are The Nasty Boys, Jake Roberts, and a WrestleMania VII report. Plus, the featured match of Tugboat vs. Earthquake as we hear from both men.

Final Thoughts: This was a stacked edition of Superstars. We saw an Intercontinental Title match and news of a possible career vs. career match between Savage and Warrior. After an ice cold finish to 1990, the company delivered a really strong PPV and is starting to make the TV shows less mundane with more featured matches. Anyway, we will also see a WrestleMania Report next week with more matches announced for the PPV.
