just listened to Schiavone’s wrestling podcast and PN News came up.

Dan Spivey and One Man Gang apparently quit WCW (or were released) because they refused to job to PN News in mid-91. Meanwhile PN was a clumsy oaf in the ring (seriously injured jobber mainstay Angel Of Death) and didn’t get over as desired as a face midcard act. Iirc he was also accused of stealing stuff (according to him it was money, and he accused a referee…) in the locker room.

Plus he blamed being more over with his gimmick than the booker’s son (Dusty’s, not Watts’) as a reason he stopped getting booked and was released in 92.

Why all the trouble with him? Just because of the lame rap wigger gimmick that was super cliché even in 1991? Did he have some famous relative or anything in WCW? (I know Mantaur is his cousin)

​I think they just REALLY liked the gimmick, especially during that time in WCW’s history when they wanted every cartoonish gimmick they could find to compete with the WWF. Plus he was a big guy who was reasonably agile when he got his tryouts, so you’d think Dusty would be all over him. I mean, really, he only stuck around for a year anyway, it’s not like they banked the promotion on him. ​
