WWF Superstars of Wrestling – October 28th, 1989

By Brian Bayless on April 3, 2017

October 28, 1989

From the Civic Center in Wheeling, WV

Your hosts are Jesse “The Body” Ventura and Vince McMahon

In action this week are the Colossal Connection, The Rockers, and Jake Roberts. Plus, the Roddy’s Rowdies Survivor Series team on the “Brother Love Show” and more!

The Rockers vs. Mike Scarberry & Ken Arnold

Bobby Heenan is shown in an insert promo laughing about the surprise he has in store for the Rockers at the Survivor Series. The Rockers take control early and eventually put Arnold away with a double flying fistdrop (3:46).

Thoughts: The Rockers are still very much over with the crowds. Heenan’s surprise ended up being the Colossal Connection, which was not much of a surprise as Andre & Haku were already on the same Survivor Series team.

WWF Update with Gene Okerlund. This focuses on the “Saturday Night’s Main Event” match between Ted DiBiase and Hulk Hogan where Zeus attacked Hogan’s neck then DiBiase put on the Million Dollar Dream. This was done for storyline purposes to make Hogan seem vulnerable.

The Widowmaker vs. Jim McPherson

The Widowmaker beats down McPherson then puts him away with the a superplex (1:54).

Thoughts: Nothing much to this other than it being The Widowmaker’s final match on Superstars during this brief run.

Hercules vs. Joe Cruz

Cruz gets beat down then clotheslined over the top rope. Hercules rolls Cruz back inside and overpowers him some more until he puts him away with a backbreaker submission (2:07).

Thoughts: Hercules gets some cheers but he is clearly sliding down the card as a babyface.

Colossal Connection w/ Bobby Heenan vs. Mike Williams & Chuck Casey

Haku beats down Casey as the Brainbusters now appear at ringside. Williams tags in and does not fare any better. Andre tags in now and headbutts Williams then holds him up for Haku, who hits a thrust kick, then drops an elbow for the win (2:52).

Thoughts: On commentary they were pushing the Colossal Connection hard as an unstoppable threat and they even had the Brainbusters come out and congratulate them as well.

We hear from The Hulkamaniacs team as they run down their opponents, The Million Dollar Team.

Mark Regan vs. Dino Bravo w/ Jimmy Hart

Bravo beats on Regan then turns him inside out with a clothesline. He then skies Regan on a backdrop as we hear him in an insert promo screaming about being the strongest man in the WWF before hitting a side slam then gets the win with a bearhug (1:49). Bravo keeps the hold on well after the bell sounded as Hart is jumping around and celebrating. We then see Regan getting stretchered to the back after the replays of the finish are shown.

Thoughts: They keep pushing Bravo as a strongman. However, it will have a payoff this time and it happens soon.

Brother Love Show with guests Roddy Piper, Jimmy Snuka, and the Bushwhackers. Not much here other than Survivor Series hype.

Barry Hardy vs. Jake Roberts

Jake runs through Hardy then tosses him outside. We hear from DiBiase in an insert promo as he tells us Roberts will not survive at the Survivor Series then Jake puts Hardy away with a DDT (1:18). After the match, Jake dumps Damien on top of Hardy.

Thoughts: More hype for the Survivor Series and the DiBiase/Roberts feud.

We get a video of Mr. Perfect & The Genius as Perfect play ping-pong in his finest pair of Zubaz, telling us Hogan cannot do what he does.

Twin Towers w/ Slick vs. Dennis Burke & Chuck Coates

Bossman has brought a ball-and-chain to the ring with him. We hear from Rick Martel & Honky Tonk Man in an insert promo putting over the Towers and their Survivor Series team. The Towers take control early as they destroy Coates. Burke is in now and he gets his ass kicked until Bossman puts him away with a sidewalk slam (1:46). After the match, the Towers put the ball-and-chain on Burke then Akeem hits a splash.

Thoughts: The ball-and-chain is a new gimmick for Bossman and expect that to be utilized going forward.

Next week in action are the Powers of Pain, Jim Duggan, Dusty Rhodes, and the featured match with The Brainbusters defending the Tag Team Titles against Demolition as we hear from both teams to hype up the match.

Final Thoughts: More basic Survivor Series hype but the big news is next week’s Tag Team Title match, which is a big deal to see on syndicated TV.
