Mid-South Wrestling – August 5th, 1982

By Brian Bayless on April 2, 2017

August 5, 1982

Your hosts are Boyd Pierce and Bill Watts

This week in action are Junkyard Dog & Mr. Olympia vs. Killer Khan & One Man Gang. Plus, Hacksaw Jim Duggan and others are in action

Watts addresses JYD’s comments from last week when he talked about since everyone else was making ultimatums, he was going to as well and refuse to wrestle on TV until he gets a match signed against Ted DiBiase. Watts says that matchmaker Grizzly Smith put this together but that JYD has not shown up to the arena yet and does not believe he will at all.

We hear comments from Dick Murdoch via satellite while on tour for New Japan Pro Wrestling. After the Japanese reporter stopped speaking, Murdoch says he did not understand what he said then puts himself over and the conditioning of the Japanese wrestlers, who are training in the ring in the background. Murdoch says he cannot wait to return to Mid-South with this conditioning and misses the fans and looking forward to returning soon.

Ted DiBiase vs. Tommy Saxon

DiBiase beats on Saxon as Watts talks about JYD’s ultimatum and the strain it puts on the matchmakers. JYD is still showing up to the arenas though as Watts says he loves the fans. DiBiase stays in control and catches Saxon with a knee smash and a backdrop. He then hits a powerslam before the figure four gets the win (3:35). DiBiase maintained the hold well after the bell rung too.

Thoughts: DiBiase is becoming more aggressive as they are getting over the story of JYD refusing to wrestle on TV until he gets a match against DiBiase. They are also telling the fans JYD will still be wrestling at the arenas to make sure they buy tickets to the house shows too.

Billy Starr vs. Buck Robley

Robley takes Starr down and works the arm. He then works a side headlock on the mat as Watts says JYD has still not arrived to the arena and that he is a man of his word. Robley beats on Starr before applying a chinlock then cuts off a comeback attempt. Swinging neckbreaker gets two and he gets another nearfall before putting Starr away with the sleeper (4:45).

Thoughts: Long and boring match. Watts was still pushing the JYD angle here too.

Hacksaw Jim Duggan vs. Tony Torres

Duggan beats on Torres as Watts puts him over as being a lunatic. He works a front facelock then catches Torres with a shoulderbreaker for a nearfall. Watts says that DiBiase is willing to face the Junkyard Dog on TV but it will be for a Tag Team Title match against Duggan and himself. Duggan then tackles Torres and after that runs him into the corner a few times before hitting a backbreaker for the win (2:54).

Thoughts: A good win for Duggan, who seems like he could be teaming with DiBiase as part of a permanent team now.

We get a replay of Iron Mike Sharpe hitting Skandor Akbar with a piledriver from two weeks ago and again last week and the Khan vs. Sharpe Louisiana Heavyweight Title match from last week, where Sharpe hit Akbar with the piledriver after Akbar cost him the match.

Killer Khan & One Man Gang w/ Skandor Akbar vs. Mr. Olympia & “Precious” Paul Ellering

JYD has not shown up as Ellering is his replacement. Olympia takes Gang down with a dropkick but fails when trying a slam. Khan tags and beats Olympia down for a bit until Olympia uses his speed to escape and tag out. Ellering & Olympia take Gang down and work the leg but Gang manages to choke out Olympia. The match breaks down then the ref orders Olympia back as Gang slams Ellering then Khan hits a top rope knee drop for the win (3:33)*.

Thoughts: Not a bad match but they are pushing the idea that Olympia is not too happy with JYD refusing to wrestle in this match.

Watts talks about Murdoch mentoring DiBiase and getting him to attend West Texas State University, even helping him out when DiBiase’s father died. We then hear from Murdoch in Japan as he talks about being disgusted in how DiBiase won the North American Title. The show closes with a few minutes of a Murdoch vs. Tatsumi Fujinami match.

Final Thoughts: The action was forgettable but they pushed a lot of storylines here that revolved around DiBiase and JYD. These storylines will get a lot more interesting too.
