WWF Superstars of Wrestling – October 21st, 1989

By Brian Bayless on March 31, 2017

October 21, 1989

From the Riverfront Coliseum in Cincinnati, OH

Your hosts are Jesse “The Body” Ventura and Vince McMahon

In action this week are Jimmy Snuka, Mr. Perfect, The Brainbusters, and Ronnie Garvin. Plus, highlights from the Ted DiBiase vs. Hulk Hogan match at “Saturday Night’s Main Event” and Dusty Rhodes as guest of the “Brother Love Show.”

“Superfly” Jimmy Snuka vs. Al Burke

Snuka beats on Burke as the announcers talk about how impressive he has been the past few weeks. He continues to rough up Burke as we hear him in an insert promo calling out Mr. Perfect then he gets the win with a Superfly Splash (2:16).

Thoughts: They continue to build Snuka up to feed him to Mr. Perfect, who is in line for a major push.

WWF Update with Gene Okerlund. We are shown clips from the Tito Santana vs. Rick Martel match that took place at “Saturday Night’s Main Event” last weekend. It ended with their respective Survivor Series teams, which were all at ringside, brawling at the end to hype up the PPV.

The Brainbusters w/ Bobby Heenan vs. Warren Bianchi & Tim Horner

Tully and Horner start off with a nice, fast-paced sequence. Arn tags as Horner fires away. Horner tags out as Bianchi gets kneed in the gut by Arn. The Brainbusters stay in control, we also hear them in an insert promo calling out all the other tag teams, and get the win after distracting the referee in order to hit Bianchi with the spike piledriver (3:16).

Thoughts: Basic squash match to put over the Brainbusters as champions.

Sean Mooney is in the Event Center to hype the 11/19 Hartford Civic Center show. Rick Rude & Bobby Heenan call out Roddy Piper to hype up their lumberjack match while Tito Santana promises to take care of Haku.

We are shown highlights from the DiBiase vs. Hogan “Saturday Night’s Main Event” match.

Mooney is back in the Event Center for some Survivor Series hype. We hear from the Million Dollar Team and The Hulkamaniacs as they hype up their match on the PPV.

Jim Evans vs. Dino Bravo w/ Jimmy Hart

Bravo does more situps with Hart on his back before the match. He clotheslines Evans then drops an elbow. Bravo follows with an inverted atomic drop as he calls out other strongmen in the WWF like the Ultimate Warrior and Jim Neidhart in an insert promo before hitting the side slam for the win (1:15).

Thoughts: Just what the company needs, another Dino Bravo strongman push.

Brother Love Show with guest Dusty Rhodes. Brother Love tries to goad him with comments on the Big Bossman and that his Survivor Series team has problems but Dusty does not worry and ends with him telling Brother Love if he gets in his way, he’ll handcuff him and beat him over the head with the nightstick. More hype for the Dusty/Bossman feud as that will lead into the PPV.

Bill Woods vs. “Ravishing” Rick Rude w/ Bobby Heenan

Woods is really ripped here. Looks like someone’s trying to get a job with the WWF. Rude beats Woods down as we hear from Piper in an insert promo to hype up their Survivor Series match. Woods fights back and almost puts Rude away but gets kneed then Rude hits the Rude Awakening for the win (1:27). After the match, Rude calls the woman Heenan brings to the ring a “Cincinnati Sweat Hog” and tells her to leave.

Thoughts: Rude’s post-match routine was funny as his feud with Piper continues to heat up.

“Rugged” Ronnie Garvin vs. Craig Green

Garvin beats on Green as the announcers hype up his feud against Greg Valentine then he puts him away with the Scorpion Death Lock (1:53).

Thoughts: The Garvin/Valentine feud continues here. It did not make for exciting TV but the house show matches were at least good.

Mr. Perfect w/ The Genius vs. Paul Roma

The Genius does the ring introductions for Perfect here too. Perfect also comes out to theme music, but its not the theme fans are the most familiar with today. The match starts off with both guys going back-and-forth in a fast-paced sequence. Roma fires away until Perfect cuts him off with a knee smash and fires away. Roma catches Perfect with an inverted atomic drop then a running powerslam. He follows with a missile dropkick but gets caught with a clothesline on a charge in the corner then gets finished off with the Perfect Plex (2:18).

Thoughts: Really good action while it lasted. Perfect, with The Genius by his side and coming out with actual entrance music certainly enhances his act. He felt like a star here.

Mooney is back in the Event Center to hype the 11/19 Hartford Civic Center show. Honky Tonk Man & Jimmy Hart tell the Red Rooster they do not care about him then Dusty Rhodes promises to hand out justice to the Big Bossman as he taunts him with his own handcuffs.

Next week in action are Jake Roberts, Dino Bravo, The Rockers, and Haku & Andre the Giant. Plus, Roddy’s Rowdies as guests on the “Brother Love Show” and more!

Final Thoughts: Lots of basic Survivor Series hype here, which will be the theme until the PPV. They also began Perfect’s big push too as he will be more of a player going forward. But until Thanksgiving, the Survivor Series will be the main focus.
