WWF Superstars of Wrestling – October 14th, 1989
By Brian Bayless on March 26, 2017
October 14, 1989
From the Riverfront Coliseum in Cincinnati, OH
Your hosts are Jesse “The Body” Ventura and Vince McMahon
In action this week are the Ultimate Warrior, Bushwhackers, Bad News Brown, Red Rooster, and Bret Hart. Plus, Macho King Randy Savage & Queen Sherri as guests on the “Brother Love Show.”
Ultimate Warrior vs. Dale Wolfe
Wolfe tries and fails when attacking Warrior from behind and gets destroyed in the corner. We get an insert promo from Bobby Heenan & Andre the Giant, whose face is painted as he calls himself the “Ultimate Giant” as they promise to reclaim the Intercontinental Title for the Heenan Family. Back to the match as Warrior stays in control and puts Wolfe away with the press slam/splash combo (1:02). After the match, Warrior kicks Wolfe underneath the ring and goes after him then after the replays we see him drag out Wolfe, who is now wearing face paint, as he yells into the camera about taking down Andre the Giant.
Thoughts: This was all about continuing the Ultimate Warrior/Andre the Giant feud.
WWF Update with Gene Okerlund. This is about the Survivor Series. Okerlund lets us know the teams will now consist of four people and he tells us the captains that will be facing each other: Hulkamaniacs vs. Million Dollar Team, The Ultimate Warriors vs. Heenan’s Family, The Dream Team vs. The Enforcers, Roddy’s Rowdies vs. Rude’s Brood, The 4×4’s vs. The King’s Court.
Mark Young & Larry Lawson vs. The Powers of Pain w/ Mr. Fuji
The Barbarian destroys Young then does the same to Lawson. The Warlord tags as Vince lets us know the Powers of Pain will be part of The Million Dollar Team at the Survivor Series as we hear from then and Mr. Fuji in an insert promo talking about surviving. The Powers of Pain stay in control as Vince promises we will hear from the final member of The Million Dollar Team later on in the show then Warlord lifts Lawson up as Barbarian takes him down with a top rope clothesline for the win (2:22). Jesse wants to know what will happen if they hit that move on Jake Roberts and his injured neck.
Thoughts: They gave us a hint of who was on some of the Survivor Series teams here. They did not push the Bushwhackers/Powers of Pain feud on commentary.
Sean Mooney is in the Event Center. The Rockers talk about taking care of the competition and that they are coming after The Brainbusters and the Tag Team Titles. Jimmy Hart & Dino Bravo talk about Bravo’s strength.
Bret Hart vs. Tom Stone
Before the match, Bret gives his glasses to a kid in the front row. Bret takes control to start as Jesse puts over his strength, speed, and intelligence. He hits Stone with a suplex then a backbreaker before pulling up Stone after an elbow drop. Bret takes Stone down with an uppercut then puts him away with a piledriver (3:18).
Thoughts: This was I believe the first time Bret would put his glasses on a kid in the front row.
Brutus Beefcake tells us to pick up a copy of the film “No Holds Barred,” which will be released next Thursday. Beefcake has the VHS tape cover on top of his scissors here.
Jim Evans vs. Greg “The Hammer” Valentine w/ Jimmy Hart
Valentine chops Evans hard in the corner to start. Evans comes back with a sunset flip for two and follows with a dropkick. He fires away but Valentine cuts him off as we hear from Ronnie Garvin in an insert promo promising to finish Valentine’s career. Evans gets tossed outside as Vince lets us know that Valentine and Garvin are on opposing teams in the Survivor Series. Valentine catches Evans with a slam then drops an elbow before getting the win with a figure four (2:59).
Thoughts: More hype for the Valentine/Garvin feud and we find out they will oppose each other at the Survivor Series too.
Mooney is back in the Event Center. He talks about the Survivor Series then runs down all of the team members: Dream Team (Dusty Rhodes, Brutus Beefcake, Tito Santana, and Red Rooster) vs. The Enforcers (Big Bossman, Akeem, Rick Martel, and Honky Tonk Man), The 4×4’s (Hacksaw Jim Duggan, Ronnie Garvin, Hercules, and Bret Hart) vs. The King’s Court (Randy Savage, Greg Valentine, Dino Bravo, and The Widowmaker), Roddy’s Rowdies (Roddy Piper, Jimmy Snuka, The Buswhackers) vs. Rude’s Brood (Rick Rude, Mr. Perfect, Fabulous Rougeau Brothers), The Ultimate Warriors (Ultimate Warrior, Jim Neidhart, and The Rockers) vs. Heenan’s Family (Andre the Giant, Haku, The Brainbusters), and The Hulkamaniacs (Hulk Hogan, Jake Roberts, and Demolition) vs. The Million Dollar Team (Ted DiBiase, Zeus, and the Powers of Pain). It must have been interesting for longtime WWF fans at the time to see Piper & Snuka on the same team.
Brian Costello vs. Red Rooster
Rooster struts around then catches Costello with a boot. He hits a bulldog as the Honky Tonk Man is shown in an insert promo saying he will break Rooster’s neck by “playing a tune” on him as Rooster stays in control and puts Costello away with the chicken wing (1:47).
Thoughts: They are now hyping a lower card feud between Rooster and the Honky Tonk Man.
Brother Love Show with guests Macho King Randy Savage and Queen Sherri. We are shown a flashback of Savage beating Duggan for the crown and the post-match attack along with some of his coronation ceremony. Savage calls himself the only “mega power” then says Jim Duggan is both a commoner and a peasant at the same time. Sherri tells Duggan he is nothing compared to the “Macho King” then Savage grabs her by the throat and wants her to say how awful Duggan is and grabs her up by the hair afterwards as Sherri says Duggan could not beat Savage even on his very best day as this ends with Brother Love and Sherri bowing to Savage. Wow, Savage was rough with Sherri here and this is something you would never be able to do on TV today. Sherri’s act is almost as if she is possessed by Savage since he became King.
Bad News Brown vs. Mitch Casey & Scott Colton
Finkel makes a mistake as he announcers one of the competitors as “Scott Casey.” Bad News immediately attacks both men and stays in control. We hear from Bad News in an insert promo as he calls out Hogan then he puts Colton away with the Ghetto Blaster then does the same to Casey and makes the referee count as he has pinned both men (2:38).
Thoughts: Since Bad News has nothing going on, he was not listed as part of the Survivor Series card, he is now winning handicap matches. Bad News’ character doesnt fit well on teams anyway so it makes sense that he is not part of the PPV.
We get a vignette of Mr. Perfect with both The Genius and himself telling us he is perfect as they call out Hogan.
The Bushwhackers vs. Brooklyn Brawler & Ray Oakley
The Bushwhackers are shown in an insert yelling and acting excited over their Survivor Series team. Oakley gets booted down on a charge as Butch beats him down. The Bushwhackers bite Brawler, who fights back. He heads up top but Luke slams him off. Oakley tags in and gets beaten down and put away with the double gutbuster (2:26). After the match, Butch licks the head of a fan while Luke lets others rub his head.
Thoughts: Some Survivor Series hype here as the Bushwhackers are now playing with the fans after winning their matches.
Mooney is in the Event Center as we hear from the Heenan’s Family and The 4×4’s Survivor Series teams to hype up their matches. The 4×4’s are all holding 2×4’s.
Next week in action are Ronnie Garvin, Rick Rude, The Brainbusters, Mr. Perfect, and Jimmy Snuka. Plus, Dusty Rhodes as guest on the “Brother Love Show.” We then hear from Ted DiBiase & Zeus and Hulk Hogan to hype up tonight’s title match on “Saturday Night’s Main Event.” The story is that DiBiase paid Zeus to be in his corner for the match.
Final Thoughts: The big news here is that we got to find out the Survivor Series matches and learn about “Saturday Night’s Main Event” this week. Other than that they continued some of the current feuds.
