WWF Wrestling Challenge – September 17th, 1989

By Brian Bayless on March 9, 2017

September 17, 1989

From the Springfield Civic Center in Springfield, MA

Your hosts are Tony Schiavone and Gorilla Monsoon

In action this week are Brutus Beefcake, Ronnie Garvin, Koko B. Ware, and the Fabulous Rougeau Brothers

Brutus Beefcake beat Dale Wolfe in a match shown on the 9/11/89 edition of “Prime Time Wrestling.”

WWF Special Report with Lord Alfred Hayes. This week’s focus is on Rick Rude attacking Roddy Piper on the “Brother Love Show.”

The Fabulous Rougeaus defeated Butch Mayo & Terry Daniels in a match shown on the 9/11/89 edition of “Prime Time Wrestling.”

Clips of Garvin as ring announcer to hype SummerSlam Coliseum Home Video release.

“Rugged” Ronnie Garvin vs. Barry Horowitz

Garvin frustrates Horowitz by escaping from the corner. We hear from Valentine in an insert promo as he talks about making Garvin’s life a living hell as Garvin hits an atomic drop. Garvin chops down Horowitz next and roughs him up until he puts him away with a Scorpion Death Lock (3:10). After the match, Horowitz is helped to the back.

Thoughts: More hype for the Garvin/Valentine feud. Garvin even busted out a new finisher here too.

Sean Mooney is in the Event Center to hype the 10/13 Nashville Auditorium show. Bobby Heenan & Andre the Giant run down the Ultimate Warrior for cheating to win the IC Title and when he attacked Andre before the bell in their previous match. Jake Roberts says that no one thought he would come back but himself and tells us the exact time it took him to heal and promises Ted DiBiase will never, ever get over what is going to happen to him.

Big Bossman w/ Slick vs. Mark Boswell

Bossman shoves down Boswell then hammers away. Bossman taunts the crowd as we hear from Dusty Rhodes in an insert promo as he shows off what he stole from Bossman and will hand out some “Americana Justice.” Bossman stays in control then puts Boswell away with a sidewalk slam (1:27). After the match, Bossman cuffs Boswell to the ropes and beats him with the nightstick.

Thoughts: They are still heavily pushing the Bossman/Dusty feud on TV.

Mooney is back in the Event Center to hype the 10/13 Nashville Auditorium show. Ultimate Warrior talks about Andre the Giant will be humiliated once again as the Bushwhackers keep yelling to hype up their match against the Powers of Pain.

Tito Santana vs. Chris Duffy

Santana works over Duffy as The Genius is in an insert promo telling us that he is in fact better than Santana. Duffy lands a few shots but Santana fights back and puts him away with the flying forearm (2:45).

Thoughts: With Tito’s feud with Martel on the backburner, he’s now down to getting called out by The Genius in insert promos. Its a spot reserved for the lower midcard.

Gene Okerlund welcomes Bobby Heenan & Andre the Giant to the interview platform. Andre yells at the Ultimate Warrior for stealing the Intercontinental Title and promises to get his back. Heenan yells about not being upset over having a heart attack as he promises Andre will squeeze the championship out of Warrior as it belongs to the “family.” Solid segment to show Andre & Heenan are out for revenge after the IC Title left the Heenan Family.

Sandy Beach vs. Koko B. Ware

Koko takes over Beach to start. We then hear from Koko in an insert promo as he sings some of his new theme music titled “Bird.” Back to the match as Beach hits a gutwrench suplex but misses an elbow drop. Koko hits a slam then a missile dropkick before dropping Beach right on his head with the Ghostbuster for the win (2:18).

Thoughts: Koko is back on TV but instead of getting a feud he’s just hyping up his new theme song, which the WWF is trying to get over for some reason.

The Powers of Pain defeated George Skaaland & Mark Frear in a match shown on the 9/11/89 edition of “Prime Time Wrestling.”

Mooney is in the Event Center. Valentine & Jimmy Hart run down Ronnie Garvin as Roddy Piper tells Rick Rude there is nothing better than beating him at his own game.

Next week in action are Dusty Rhodes, Ted DiBiase, Hart Foundation, Mr. Perfect, and Ultimate Warrior.

Final Thoughts: Unless you missed “Superstars of Wrestling” there was nothing you missed here as Challenge was firmly the “B” show this week.

Here is my schedule for the next several days:
