WWF Superstars of Wrestling – August 6th, 1989
By Brian Bayless on February 7, 2017
August 5, 1989
From the Worcester Centrum in Worcester, MA
Your hosts are Jesse “The Body” Ventura and Vince McMahon
In action this week are the Ultimate Warrior, Twin Towers, and Hercules. Plus, highlights from the Brutus Beefcake vs. Randy Savage match from “Saturday Night’s Main Event” and The Brainbusters & Bobby Heenan as guests on the “Brother Love Show.”
The Rockers vs. Boris Zhukov & Sandy Beach
Tito Santana is shown in an insert promo stating he is proud to team with people he can trust like the Rockers to go up against The Fabulous Rougeaus & Rick Martel as Jesse notes the latter team has the advantage as they can communicate in French, unlike their opponents. The Rockers clear the ring with dropkicks as Jesse calls them out for illegal double-teaming. Beach beats on Jannetty and gets a few nearfalls before hammering away in the corner. Jannetty reverses an Irish whip and follows with a super kick. Zhukov breaks up the pin as the match breaks down and he gets dumped as the Rockers get the win with a double flying fist drop (4:21).
Thoughts: The crowd was really into the Rockers as this match hyped up their six-man tag at SummerSlam.
WWF Update with Gene Okerlund. We get highlights of the Beefcake vs. Savage match from “Saturday Night’s Main Event” as it mainly focused on Zeus’ run-in attack.
Hercules vs. Chris Duffy
The announcers talk about the Zeus attack as Jesse questions why a man of Hogan’s size needs a chair. The Genius is then shown in an insert promo as he calls Hogan & Savage “tweedle-dee and tweedle-dum” as Jesse jokes that those are the names for Vince & Okerlund. Hercules stays in control until he puts Duffy away with the backbreaker submission (2:09).
Thoughts: This match was really just a backdrop for the announcers to talk about the SummerSlam main event. No mention of Hercules’ feud with Dino Bravo.
The Bushwhackers shill the WWF Ice Cream Bars.
Sean Mooney is in the Event Center hyping up the 9/2 Nashville Auditorium house show. The Big Bossman & Slick call out Dusty Rhodes for being a thief then Dusty taunts Bossman for wanting back his stuff.
Twin Towers vs. Mike Williams & Terry Daniels
Andre the Giant is shown in an insert promo as he talks about teaming with the Twin Towers, calling himself the “Eiffel Tower,” while calling out SummerSlam opponents Demolition & King Duggan. The Towers destroy their opponents until Bossman hits Williams with a Samoan drop then Akeem gets the win with a splash (2:45). After the match, Akeem cuffs Williams to the ropes while Bossman beats him with the nightstick.
Thoughts: A match to promote the other six-man tag at SummerSlam.
We get a video package on Roddy Piper to put over how he is the new co-host of “Prime Time Wrestling.”
Red Rooster vs ???
We never got the enhancement talent’s name. Rooster is shown in an insert talking about beating Mr. Perfect at SummerSlam then he quickly gets a win with the flying chicken wing (0:48).
Thoughts: Just basic hype for the Rooster vs. Perfect match at SummerSlam.
Sensational Sherri is with Randy Savage & Zeus and talks about the “Cauldron of Madness” as they gloat over what happened on “Saturday Night’s Main Event.” Savage tells Hogan & Beefcake they cannot escape from them and that they are so shaekn he heard that Miss Elizabeth will be with them down the aisle as Sherri promises to rip her hair and clothes off if she even dares to touch Savage.
Ultimate Warrior vs. Barry Horowitz
Horowitz attacks Warrior from behind but it has zero effect. Warrior clotheslines Horowitz to the floor then goes out and roughs him up as Vince cackles like an idiot over Warrior beating his chest. Warrior is then shown in an insert promo telling Rick Rude he will take back his Intercontinental Title then hits a slam and a clothesline for the win (2:27). After the match, Horowitz is taken out on a stretcher.
Thoughts: Odd how the finish of this match went as Warrior just hit a scoop slam then won with a basic running clothesline yet Horowitz left on a stretcher. Horowitz worked the next night at the “Wrestling Challenge” tapings so it didnt seem legit. Anyway, they are really pushing the Rude vs. Warrior rematch strong.
Brother Love Show with guests The Brainbusters & Bobby Heenan. Brother Love declares this a celebration as the new Tag Team Champions head out to the stage. Heenan gloats about how they won the titles “fair and square” while the Brainbusters declare themselves the baddest team of them all. Arn then lists of all the teams they’ve feuded with since entering the WWF and how the journey ended with them beating Demolition for the titles. It ends with a group hug and more gloating.
SummerSlam Report with Gene Okerlund. They also showed the Beefcake & Hogan promo from “Saturday Night’s Main Event.”
Honky Tonk Man w/ Jimmy Hart vs. Tony Durante
Hart is shown in an insert promo telling Dusty Rhodes that Honky has the “Dusty Rhodes Blues” song all tuned up for him. Honky takes control early and puts Durante away with the Shake, Rattle, and Roll (1:22).
Thoughts: Quick match to hype up Honky vs. Dusty at SummerSlam.
Mooney is back in the Event Center. Demolition tells The Brainbusters they will get back their Tag Team Titles while Andre the Giant tells Heenan not to worry as he will take care of the Ultimate Warrior.
Next week in action are Ted DiBiase, Rick Rude, and Demolition. Plus, “Brother Love Show” with guests Randy Savage, Zeus, and Sensational Sherri. The show then ends with WWF President Jack Tunney suspending referee Ronnie Garvin indefinitely for repeated violations of putting his hands on talent.
Final Thoughts: Overall, a solid show. They’ve done a good job at hyping up the top SummerSlam and the Beefcake & Hogan vs. Savage & Zeus feud has been really good. The build to Summerslam continues.
