WWF Wrestling Challenge – July 30th, 1989
By Brian Bayless on February 6, 2017
July 30, 1989
From the Niagara Falls Convention Center in Niagara Falls, NY
Your hosts are Tony Schiavone, Gorilla Monsoon, and Bobby Heenan
In action tonight are the Bushwhackers, Bad News Brown, Fabulous Rougeau Brothers, and King Duggan.
Bushwhackers vs. The Gladiator & Sandy Beach
The Bushwhackers take control as Mr. Fuji is shown in an insert promo warning the Bushwhackers what will happen when they face the Powers of Pain. The Bushwhackers then hit The Gladiator with a battering ram before putting him away with a double gutbuster (3:09).
Thoughts: A short match to hype up a new tag team feud between the Powers of Pain and the Bushwhackers.
WWF Special Report with Lord Alfred Hayes. Its on the Dusty/Big Bossman segments from the 7/22/89 edition of “Superstars of Wrestling.”
Brook Bermice vs. Bad News Brown
Bad News attacks Bermice from behind and stays in control. The Genius is shown in an insert promo telling us not to hang around in Bad News’ neighborhood. Bad News stays in control until hitting the Ghetto Blaster for the win (1:54). After the match, Bad News tosses Bermice to the floor.
Thoughts: Bad News continues to beat up jobbers and do his usual antics but remains without any creative direction. 1989 has not been a banner year for the guy.
Red Rooster vs. Jim Chapel
Rooster calls himself “poultry in motion” as he makes his way to the ring. He’s then shown in an insert promo saying that he might not be Perfect but can cause some damage to Mr. Perfect. Chapel fights back in the corner but Rooster catches him with a knee smash then uses an elevated chicken wing for the win (1:44).
Thoughts: Quick match to hype up the Rooster vs. Perfect match at SummerSlam.
Event Center segment. They were all the same as this past week’s “Superstars of Wrestling.”
Dino Bravo w/ Jimmy Hart vs. Dale Wolfe
Ronnie Garvin is the referee for this match. Bravo turns his back then Wolfe hits a dropkick for a nearfall. Bravo fights back and hits a backdrop before dropping an elbow. He beats on Wolfe in the corner then yells at Garvin when asked to break. Bravo pulls up Wolfe after hitting a suplex then after an inverted atomic drop as Bravo argues with Garvin. Bravo inflicts more punishment before finally putting Wolfe away with a side slam (2:24). After the match, Bravo taunts Garvin to hit him as Hart jumps around.
Thoughts: This was more about the Garvin angle where he will face disciplinary action if he puts his hands on another wrestler.
Koko B. Ware plugs WWF Ice Cream Bars
Comments from Randy Savage, Sensational Sherri, and Zeus that we heard from “Superstars of Wrestling.”
Iron Mike Sharpe vs. King Duggan
Duggan hits a few clotheslines as Sharpe rolls outside. Sharpe re-enters as Duggan works a chinlock then hits a hip toss to set up the Three Point Stance and the win (1:57).
Thoughts: Not much to say about this other than Duggan is still over despite the ludicrous king gimmick.
Gene Okerlund welcomes Bobby Heenan & The Brainbusters to the interview platform. He asks about their upcoming title match against Demolition as they tell us at the end of the weekend they will be the new Tag Team Champions as Heenan says their match at SummerSlam against the Hart Foundation will be non-title. And they were.
SummerSlam Report, which was the same as from “Superstars of Wrestling.”
Fabulous Rougeau Brothers w/ Jimmy Hart vs. Terry Daniels & Mario Mancini
The Rougeaus try to outsmart Daniels but fail. They huddle and after that Raymond pulls the ropes down on Daniels as the Rougeaus hug. Daniels is rolled inside as Rick Martel is shown in an insert promo telling us its a treat for us to see him team with the Rougeaus. Daniels is hit with the Rougeau Bomb then put him away with a Boston Crab/knee drop combo (3:34). After the match, Martel comes out to the ring and celebrates with the Rougeaus & Hart.
Thoughts: A nice way to put over the six-man tag at SummerSlam against Tito & The Rockers.
Event Center segment.,
Next week in action are The Brainbusters, Tito Santana, Ted DiBiase, and Hillbilly Jim. The show closes with comments from Brutus Beefcake, Honky Tonk Man, and Hulk Hogan to hype up their “Saturday Night’s Main Event” matches.
Final Thoughts: Not a whole lot to this show, really. If you saw “Superstars” you wouldnt have missed anything with this episode as the SummerSlam hype train continues.
