July 29, 1989
From the Community War Memorial in Rochester, NY
Your hosts are Jesse “The Body” Ventura and Vince McMahon
In action this week are the Powers of Pain, Mr. Perfect, Jimmy Snuka, and Brutus Beefcake. Plus, Andre the Giant and the Ultimate Warrior as guests on the “Brother Love Show” and more.
Hart Foundation vs. Dave Coleman & Barry Horowtiz
Horowitz punches Bret and takes control briefly until Bret blocks a reverse rollup. We hear from The Brainbusters & Bobby Heenan in an insert promo as Heenan vows that his team will become the Tag Team Champions before SummerSlam and that their match on the PPV will be non-title. The Hart Foundation soften up Coleman before putting him away with the Hart Attack (2:48).
Thoughts: Quick match used to hype up the Hart Foundation vs. Brainbusters match at SummerSlam as the Brainbusters promise to win the Tag Team Titles and not give the Hart Foundation a shot at the title.
WWF Update with Gene Okerlund. This week’s focus is from last week’s episode of “Superstars” when Dusty Rhodes ran in after the Big Bossman’s match and stole his hat, handcuffs, and nightstick. We then hear from Big Bossman & Slick as they are livid and promise to make Dusty pay for the crimes he committed. Dusty is then shown with the Bossman’s stuff as he talks about how he never stole anything but rather “got himself some toys” as he taunts Bossman to get his stuff back.
Jim Chapel vs. The Widowmaker
The Widowmaker works the arm before hitting a slam. Jesse puts over the Widowmaker’s abilities as the Widowmaker is then shown in an insert promo telling us he is here for one reason and we will all find out soon as he gets what he wants. Widowmaker then places Chapel up top and hits a superplex for the win (2:04).
Thoughts: A quick match for the Widowmaker as they are still trying to establish his character.
Brutus “The Barber” Beefcake vs. Chuck Williams
The Genius is shown in an insert promo wishing Hulk Hogan & Beefcake farewell once Zeus & Randy Savage get through with them. Beefcake takes control early as the announcers put over the SummerSlam main event then Beefcake puts on the sleeper for the win (1:34). After the match, Williams gets a haircut.
Thoughts: Beefcake remains quite over with the crowds as they used this to hype up the SummerSlam main event.
Sean Mooney is in the Event Center to hype the September 2nd Nashville show. Hercules tells Ted DiBiase he is his worst nightmare while Slick tells Dusty Rhodes his best role is a janitor as Bossman runs down Dusty for being a thief.
Mr. Perfect vs. Bill Wood
Ronnie Garvin is the referee for this match. Jesse believes Mr. Perfect’s record will remain perfect after SummerSlam as Perfect chops Woods in the corner. He continues to beat on Wood as the Red Rooster is shown in an insert promo cackling and making more bird puns as he believes he’ll win at SummerSlam. Perfect then flattens Wood with a clothesline before hitting the Perfect Plex for the win (2:32). After the match, Perfect taunts Garvin to hit him as he knows Garvin is on probation then he leaves.
Thoughts: Perfect looked really good here as they also pushed Garvin’s storyline of being on the verge of suspension as a referee due to attacking competitors as well as the Perfect vs. Rooster SummerSlam match.
Hogan & Beefcake are shown in a taped promo. They talk about needing their own “potion” to combat whatever Sherri is brewing in her cauldron. Hogan once again talks about his “survival sweat” as this insanity finally ends. Hogan & Beefcake seemed to be on the good stuff here. They could have built up this match as The Potion vs. The Cauldron based off the promos.
Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka vs. Iron Mike Sharpe
Before the match, DiBiase is shown in an insert promo running down Snuka for being a poor Islander while bragging about his money as he talks about winning at SummerSlam. Sharpe tries a turnbuckle smash but that fails as Snuka continuously rams him in the corner. Snuka stays in control then puts Sharpe away with the Superfly Splash (2:31).
Thoughts: They used this to hype up the Snuka vs. DiBiase SummerSlam match, which is really a few steps down for DiBiase.
Brother Love Show is next. It starts with Bobby Heenan & Andre the Giant before the Ultimate Warrior is brought out. Warrior comes out to tell Andre when the time comes, they will meet in the ring. Warrior is now face-to-face with Andre as he promises to beat him then Warrior beats his chest and leaves as Andre is pissed. We are getting a Warrior vs. Andre feud as the Warrior shows no fear towards the giant. Decent segment here.
SummerSlam Report with Gene Okerlund. We hear from Sherri, Savage, and Zeus as Sherri tells us about the “Cauldron of Madness” as Sherri promises Hogan & Beefcake will rot at the bottom of the ocean along with the rest of the “pukesters.” This ends with Zeus screaming and beating his chest. Other matches have been added such as Hercules vs. Greg Valentine and The Rockers & Tito Santana vs. The Fabulous Rougeau Brothers & Rick Martel as we hear from both teams. The Rockers & Tito are all sporting SummerSlam tank tops in an attempt to get people to buy some.
John Weiss & Gary Wolfe vs. Powers of Pain w/ Mr. Fuji
Jesse calls Fuji “The Penguin” and jokes about him being the favorite to play The Penguin in the next Batman sequel. The Bushwhackers are shown in an insert promo yelling nonsense that I guess was aimed at the Powers of Pain, who are firmly in control of this match. The Powers then put Wolfe away after Warlord held up Wolfe so the Barbarian could hit a clothesline (2:31).
Thoughts: Its been over a year since the Powers of Pain debut and they really never got over as a team to be honest. Their match against the Bushwhackers doesnt sound too promising either.
Mooney is back in the Event Center to hype the 9/2 Nashville show. We hear from Jimmy Hart, Greg Valentine, and Dino Bravo to hype up a tag match against the Hart Foundation then the Ultimate Warrior tells Andre he has never dealt with the intensity he has to get ready for that match.
Next week in action are the Ultimate Warrior, Twin Towers, and Hercules. Plus, highlights from the Beefcake vs. Savage match from “this weekend (Saturday Night’s Main Event).” The show closes with promos from Hogan and the Honky Tonk Man to hype up their match at SNME then comments from Savage & Sherri about
Final Thoughts: Tons of SummerSlam hype here and they even added two more matches to the show. They also did the hard sell for us to watch SNME too. Overall, a decent show.
