Scott, I’m sorry- Fantasy Booking the Cena Heel Turn
By Scott Keith on January 28, 2017
Scott, I’m so beat down from Week 1 of the Trump Reich that I’ve escaped into my head to do the one thing no smark should ever do- fantasy book a Cena heel turn. But hear me out.
We know that the reason WWE holds off on a Cena heel run is merchandise. No matter how satisfying such a move would be, it can’t happen unless Vince feels (and rightfully so) that they can replace his merch numbers with something else.
So why not replace those Cena purple shirts with a retro take on one of the hottest angles- and T-shirts!- the business has ever seen- the NWO.
Work an angle where (and I really don’t care how for this argument) Cena turns heel, and gets Roman Reigns to do the same. They can either go full heel or- just like in the original run- go smart-ass heel.
The important thing is they’d have to do three things:
1. Dominate the tag team division. They have to win every tag belt. The Raw belts, the Smackdown belts…hell, send them down to NXT to recreate the lawn dart bit and win those belts too.
2. Have as a mini-story that the GMs from all three brands realize they have to work together to stop this. Steph has to drop the bitchy act and work with Shane and Regal to find two guys to beat them and restore order.
3. The "third man" angle. This is probably the trickiest part, since what made the angle work so well the first time is Hogan’s turn. If they hold off Cena to be the third man, though, everyone knows the ending. They’ve got to capture that shock factor. (If Daniel Bryan were still able to fight…that would be the real money…)
There’s all sorts of ways to go with this. Bring back Nash and Hall for limited runs as mouthpieces. Do a Wrestlemania moment with Hogan, begging them not to go down his route. Bring Vince back for a run.
Let’s face it- with the Goldberg storyline, Vince has found a way to make money with old storylines. Why not try it one more time?
Come on everyone, let’s just let go of the Cena heel thing. While Cena redoing the nWo with the Shield playing Hall & Nash might be awesome, there’s just too many things working against it that have nothing to do with merchandise or creative issues. You might as well just pitch an idea where Reigns actually gets over as a babyface while you’re at it.
