Mid-South Wrestling – May 20th, 1982

May 20, 1982
Your hosts are Boyd Pierce and Bill Watts
We start off with a spotlight on “Precious” Paul Ellering. He is in the ring with several kids and teaches them to do pushups then proceeds to have two large women sit on him as he does pushups then the women fawn all over him. Ellering had some personality in this role but was not much of a wrestler at all.
Rick Ferrara vs. Dick Murdoch
These two trade side headlocks before struggling on the mat. Murdoch hits an atomic drop but Ferrara fights back. Murdoch cuts off Ferrara with an elbow smash and stays on the attack until he hits a brainbuster for the win (2:17).
Thoughts: A nothing match to put over Murdoch.
The Assassin vs. Buddy Landel
The Assassin works a side headlock on the mat for a while. Landel finally fights out but Assassin yanks him down by the hair. Landel fights back but runs into a knee smash then the Assassin loads his boot and kicks Landel in the face as Landell rolls around on the mat in pain. Assassin now hits a few knee drops then stomps away before making Landel submit to a hammerlock (3:12).
Thoughts: The Assassin’s dated offense was just a crowd killer here. Landel continues to show promise though.
Bob Roop vs. Coco Samoa
Samoa hits some sort of hurricarana in the corner but it ends up leading to a pinfall reversal sequence. Roop grabs an armbar and puts it back on when Samoa breaks out. Roop tries a Vader Bomb but Samoa gets his knees up as Watts talks more about Steve Williams and how Roop wants to embarrass him. Samoa stays on the attack but runs into a high knee then Roop hits a leg drop for the win (3:43).
Thoughts: A fairly easy win for Roop but the focus was on Steve Williams, who Watts put over here and all throughout the show.
Kim Duk vs. Ernie Ladd
Duk is better known to WWF fans as Tiger Chung Lee. Ladd works a chinlock then after that switches to a bearhug. Duk breaks out and beats on Ladd in the corner. He stays on the attack but misses an elbow drop then Ladd hits a big boot before using the double leg drop gets the win (2:01).
Thoughts: Ladd is still a star here but he was practically immobile in the ring here and his offense looked pathetic.
We get a replay of the DiBiase & Ladd vs. Roop & The Assassin match from two weeks ago when One Man Gang & Skandor Akbar interfered, resulting in DiBiase getting pinned.
One Man Gang & The Grappler w/ Skandor Akbar vs. Iron Mike Sharpe & Jesse Barr
Sharpe knocks down the Grappler, who fights right back. Gang tags in as Sharpe tries to slam him. Sharpe fails then Gang wins a test-of-strength. Gang beats down Sharpe but misses an elbow drop. Gang fights back but Sharpe escapes from the corner then tags out as Barr runs wild on the Grappler. Gang ends up making a blind tag though and drops an elbow on Barr as he had the Grappler in a cradle and that gets the win (3:29).
Thoughts: A fairly easy win for Gang & The Grappler as Gang is the one being pushed here.
Billy Starr vs. Mr. Olympia
Mr. Olympia is the Mississippi Heavyweight Champion and one-half of the Tag Team Champions. He works a headlock as the announcers put over Junkyard Dog. Olympia takes Starr down again with a headlock and works that for a bit. Starr cheap shots Olympia after a break in the corner but Olympia fights back then works a chinlock. He has Starr in the corner then catches his leg and uses a leg lock. Starr tries but is unable to muster any offense as Olympia gets two with a dropkick. Olympia follows with two more dropkicks and a backdrop then locks on the sleeper for the win (6:27) *.
Thoughts: Good god this should not have been over six minutes long.
The Turk vs. Ted DiBiase
DiBiase looks upset during the introductions. He works a side headlock then takes the Turk down with a sunset flip for a nearfall. Watts says that JYD will be here next week as DiBiase works a side headlock on the mat. DiBiase rams Turk into the corner and drops an elbow for two. Turk comes back with a forearm smash but DiBiase fights back and hits a backdrop as that gets two then puts him away with a powerslam seconds before the show ran out of time (4:43).
Thoughts: DiBiase gets the win then the show ends. DiBiase seemed a bit more aggressive than usual.
Final Thoughts: A rare dud from Mid-South this week. This show was incredibly boring and did not have any angle advancements at all. Hopefully next week we get some actual excitement from the product.
