WWF Superstars of Wrestling – July 8th, 1989
By Brian Bayless on January 17, 2017
July 8, 1989
From the Dane County Expo Center in Madison, WI
Your hosts are Jesse “The Body” Ventura and Vince McMahon
In action this week are Jimmy Snuka, The Rockers, Mr. Perfect, Twin Towers, and Koko B. Ware
Jimmy “Superfly” Snuka vs. Tom Stone
The Genius is shown in an insert promo calling Honky’s attack on Snuka one of Honky’s greatest hits. Snuka hits a crossbody after a criss-cross sequence and chops Stone down before the Superfly Splash gets the win (1:35).
Thoughts: They continue to push the Snuka/Honky feud on TV.
WWF Update with Gene Okerlund. This week’s focus is on last week’s “Brother Love Show” when Tito Santana attacked Rick Martel. We then hear comments from both men.
Jim Evans & Ron Fails vs. Twin Towers w/ Slick
The Towers destroy Fails to start. Evans tags as Bossman hits him with a shoulderbreaker then Akeem puts him away with a splash (1:52). After the match, Bossman cuffs Fails to the ropes and beats him with the nightstick.
Thoughts: No mention of the Towers feud with Demolition here.
Sean Mooney is back in the Event Center to hype the 7/28 Nashville show. King Hacksaw Jim Duggan tells us he is a “meat and potatoes” king and if Rick Rude wants it he can come try and take the crown away. Ted DiBiase laughs at Dusty Rhodes calling himself the American Dream because he relishes in the fact he is a common man to hype their match.
Dusty Rhodes trashman vignette airs again.
Dino Bravo w/ Jimmy Hart vs. Brad Perry
Ronnie Garvin is the referee here. Bravo celebrates after shoving Perry down then beats him down as Garvin yells at him to back off his opponent. Bravo is now pissed at Garvin but he remains in control. Bravo hangs Perry in the tree- of-woe as Garvin orders him to back off but he does not listen. Garvin then backs Bravo up and unhooks Perry then raises his hand as Bravo got himself disqualified (2:33). Bravo swings at Garvin but misses then Garvin fires away and the two brawl until several officials run out to break things up.
Thoughts: They finally showed Garvin lay down the law as a referee as he disqualified Bravo then embarrassed him after the match.
Mooney is back in the Event Center to hype the 7/28 Nashville show. Mr Fuji & Powers of Pain tell Garvin to count to three when they defeat Demolition for the Tag Team Titles. Brutus Beefcake then calls out Greg Valentine to hype their match as they continue their feud since breaking up as a team over two years ago.
Tom Burton & Dusty Wolfe vs. The Rockers
Burton cheap shots Jannetty from the apron ten the match breaks down as the Rockers clear the ring. The Rougeaus & Jimmy Hart are in an insert promo telling us not to buy “WWF Magazine” this month because the Rockers are on the cover. The Rockers stay in control and put Burton away with a double flying fist drop (2:11).
Thoughts: The Rougeaus insert promos taunting the Rockers have been brilliant. They were a tremendous heel act.
Brother Love Show with guest Sensational Sherri. She then introduces Randy Savage, calling him the “undisputed Champion,” as Savage comes out. Savage tells us that Hulk Hogan & Brutus Beefcake cannot beat him one-on-one so they are thinking about teaming up to beat him and that might be a problem. However, Savage said he is the world’s greatest problem solver and found someone to watch his back as Zeus comes out to the stage. Zeus is grunting as Savage tells Hogan & Beefcake to “pick a date and not be late” so they can face off. Zeus then warns Hogan they will destroy him as the segment ends. A major segment here as Savage & Zeus have formed an alliance to take on Hogan & Beefcake and with SummerSlam ads casually mentioned on TV the past couple of weeks you can put the two together.
Koko B. Ware vs. Harley Manson
Koko hits Manson with a dropkick and a clothesline before finishing him off with a fist drop from the middle rope (0:52).
Thoughts: Really quick match for Koko, who did not even use his signature moves in the match. In fact, it was the second straight match that ended with a fist drop.
An ad for SummerSlam airs, this time telling us it will take place on Monday, August 28th.
Mr. Perfect vs. Scott Colton
Perfect grounds Colton and stretches him out. He then starts chopping Colton hard before putting him away with the Perfect Plex (1:44).
Thoughts: Perfect’s offense looked tremendous as he is being pushed as a bigger threat on commentary.
An address pops up on the screen where you can send get well cards to Jake Roberts.
The “No Holds Barred” music video airs again, this time by “popular demand.” Actually, it wasnt a bad video.
Greg “The Hammer” Valentine w/ Jimmy Hart vs. Frankie DeFalco
Valentine beats on DeFalco as we hear him in an insert promo telling us that Ronnie Garvin is the worst referee in WWF history and will make sure he is suspended forever. DeFalco runs into a knee smash then Valentines softens up the leg before putting him away with the figure-four (2:03).
Thoughts: This let us know that the Garvin/Valentine feud will not be ending anytime soon.
Mooney is once again in the Event Center to hype the 7/28 Nashville show. Hogan & Elizabeth call out Savage as Elizabeth promises to slap Savage as hard as she can as Hogan laughs.
Next week in action are the Ultimate Warrior, Honky Tonk Man, and Tito Santana. Plus, Hulk Hogan & Brutus Beefcake as guests on the “Brother Love Show.”
Final Thoughts: This show was huge as it set up the main event for SummerSlam. Other than that, they heated up ongoing feuds as the build to SummerSlam begins.
