WWF Superstars of Wrestling – July 1st, 1989
By Brian Bayless on January 15, 2017
July 1, 1989
From the Dane County Expo Center in Madison, WI
Your hosts are Jesse “The Body” Ventura and Vince McMahon
In action this week are Brutus Beefcake, The Genius, Red Rooster, Haku, and the Hart Foundation. Plus, Rick Martel & Slick as guests on the “Brother Love Show.”
Jim Magen vs. Red Rooster
Rooster struts and toys with Magen by acting like an actual Rooster as Vince laughs on commentary. Rooster then breaks up an arm wringer with an upkick as both guys trade slams until Rooster puts Magen away with the chicken wing (1:57).
Thoughts: I think Vince was more amused by this match than anyone else as they were really trying to get over the Rooster’s mannerisms.
WWF Update with Gene Okerlund. We are shown footage from last week when the Ultimate Warrior ran out and attacked Rick Rude as he attempted to give a lady the Rude Awakening. We then hear from both men to hype up their feud.
SummerSlam ad appears.
Hart Foundation vs. Brian Costello & Ray Oakley
Bret beats on Costello to start. Oakley tags in as the Hart Foundation remain in control then we hear from both in an insert promo as they tell us whether they are in singles or tag team competition, their opponents will get a “heart attack” then they put Oakley away with the Hart Attack and the win (2:53).
Thoughts: The Hart Foundation are back teaming together on TV after a brief singles run. The fans are still into them too.
Some guy tells us that Hulk Hogan should win an “Academy Award.” Man, the stuff the WWF had these people say to hype the film was something else.
Red Tyler vs. Bad News Brown
Bad News immediately attacks Tyler. He hits a slam then chokes Tyler out and beats on him some more until he hits the Ghetto Blaster for the win (1:56). After the match, Bad News tosses Tyler to the floor.
Thoughts: More of the same from Bad News as he is still without a feud.
Sean Mooney is in the Event Center to hype the 7/28 show in Nashville. Rick Rude & Bobby Heenan tell King Hacksaw Jim Duggan he will lose the crown and bow to the new king, who is also the sexiest man alive.
Dusty Rhodes is shown as a plumber where he performs the first-ever “triple potty bypass” which sees him fixed a clogged toilet with a turd still inside. Lots of Vince humor here as Dusty ended up being dirty from the toilet.
Haku w/ Bobby Heenan vs. Chris Zarna
Andre the Giant is in an insert promo telling us Haku is the real king of the WWF. Zarna refuses a handshake then Haku takes control. Haku hits a backbreaker as Heenan is shown laughing then Zarna is finished off with a Thrust Kick (1:57).
Thoughts: The story here is that Haku is irate over the fact he’s no longer the king. It was just a way for him to wrap up his feud with Duggan.
Mooney is in the Event Center to once again hype the 7/28 Nashville show. Demolition tells Mr. Fuji they will keep an eye on him as they take care of the Powers of Pain while Randy Savage & Sensational Sherri tell Hulk Hogan they will take back the World Heavyweight Title.
The Genius vs. Sonny Rogers
The Genius’s post-match promo insults the fans as he calls himself the World’s smartest man. Rogers tries to get the crowd behind him but Poffo takes control. He punches Rogers against the ropes then hits a slam before putting him away with a somersault senton off of the top rope (1:15).
Thoughts: The in-ring debut of The Genius character. He got a little bit of heat with his poem but the fans did not seem to care once the bell rang.
Brother Love Show with guests Rick Martel & Slick. Slick tells us that the “refried-bean eating Chico Santana” created a monster in Martel, who gloats about getting rid of Santana as he was the one who carried Strike Force. Martel keeps trash-talking Santana, even saying that he smells, as Santana himself comes out. Slick cuts him off and refers to him as “taco breath” but Santana has had enough and decks Slick before going after Martel. The former partners brawl with Santana getting the upper hand until they are separated by several WWE officials. Good segment as Tito finally had enough of Martel & Slick’s trash talk and fought back. Its been three month since WrestleMania V and this was the first physical altercation between the two.
Brutus “The Barber” Beefcake vs. Jim Merkle
Sensational Sherri is shown in an insert promo telling Beefcake he will never cut Savage’s hair because he is just a loser with a bad haircut. Merkle lands a few shots in the corner but Beefcake takes control. He hits a suplex before putting Merkle away with a sleeper (1:49).
Thoughts: They are back to pushing the Beefcake/Savage feud on TV.
Clips from “No Holds Barred” showing Zeus beating people up in a bar.
Fabulous Rougeau Brothers w/ Jimmy Hart vs. Paul Roma & Todd Becker
Roma is sporting all black gear now. Jacques keeps taunting Roma & Becker by flexing then tries to dropkick Roma from behind but fails as Roma clears the Rougeaus from the ring with dropkicks. Becker tags in but is distracted by Hart as the Rougeaus attack him. The Rougeaus are shown in an insert promo taunting the Rockers before they put Becker away with a Boston Crab/Knee Drop combo (2:52).
Thoughts: The Rougeaus heel stuff was pretty good here and Roma got a bit of shine too. They’ve given the Rougeaus/Rockers feud a lot of TV time.
Mooney is once again in the Event Center to hype the 7/28 Nashville show. Greg Valentine & Jimmy Hart laugh over Beefcake’s hair getting cut and talks about how he will get hurt. Dusty Rhodes then talks about Ted DiBiase to hype up their match.
In action next week are Koko B. Ware, Twin Towers, Mr. Perfect, The Rockers, and Jimmy Snuka. Plus, Randy Savage & Sensational Sherri as guests on the “Brother Love Show.” After that, King Hacksaw Jim Duggan tell us to spend our 4th of July weekend at the theater to see “No Holds Barred.”
Final Thoughts: Not a bad show this week. The “Brother Love Segment” was good and the “No Holds Barred” hype is slowing down a bit.
