June 24, 1989
From the Dane County Coliseum in Madison, WI
Your hosts are Jesse “The Body” Ventura and Vince McMahon
This week we will get the premiere of the “No Holds Barred” music video. In action are Demolition, “The Widowmaker” Barry Windham, King Hacksaw Jim Duggan, and Hillbilly Jim. Plus, the “Brother Love Show” with guest Ted DiBiase and more!
Demolition vs. Chris Curtis & Tom Stone
Demolition beats on Stone to start. Slick & Twin Towers are shown in an insert promo as they tell us Demolition has a problem with reality if they want to face the Twin Towers. Curtis is in now and does not fare any better as Demolition quickly puts him away with the Decapitation (2:30).
Thoughts: The Demolition/Towers feud is still being pushed on TV.
WWF Update with Gene Okerlund. This is a replay from last week’s “Brother Love Show” when the Honky Tonk Man attacked Jimmu Snuka from behind. After that, Honky tells Snuka that is what happens when you mess with his music but that he shows no mercy.
Frank DeFalco vs. “The Widowmaker” Barry Windham
Windham is shown in an insert promo as he tells us there is a lot of gold in the WWF and he wants it all, especially the World Heavyweight Championship. Windham starts off by taking DeFalco down with an armdrag. Windham knocks DeFalco down a few times after toying with him then hits a superplex for the win (1:39).
Thoughts: Windham looked really good here. According to Windham himself, he left WCW due to being underpaid and that Herd never wanted to discuss a new deal with him so he called up Pat Patterson, who told him to call up Vince McMahon. Windham also said he came up with the widowmaker gimmick and got the same from a rodeo bull that ended up killing several people throughout its career and was so dangerous they had to retire it from the sport.
The “No Holds Barred” music video is shown.
Sean Mooney is in the Event Center to hype the 6/28 Nashville show. Ted DiBiase runs down Dusty Rhodes while King Hacksaw Jim Duggan does the same towards Rick Rude to hype up those matches.
King Hacksaw Jim Duggan vs. Jake Milliman
Haku is in an insert promo telling Duggan he stole his king crown as Bobby Heenan vows they will reclaim the king title. Duggan takes control early and hits a clothesline and a slam before getting the win with his Three Point Stance (1:48).
Thoughts: The fans still love Duggan but my lord was this gimmick just too goofy, even for Duggan.
The Genius gives his thoughts on “No Holds Barred.” He thought Hogan did good but closes by saying Randy Savage will take his title away.
Jim Evans & Jim Powers vs. The Brainbusters w/ Bobby Heenan
Powers slams Tully but Arn attacks him from behind. Powers almost rolls up Tully for the win but Arn fights back. Evans tags but Arn drops an elbow to the back of his neck. Arn follows with a spinebuster then tags Tully as the Brainbusters stay in control and hit the spike piledriver behind the referee’s back for the win (2:08).
Thoughts: Another win for the Brainbusters as they continue to feud with the Bushwhackers.
Mooney is in the Event Center. Brutus Beefcake calls out Greg Valentine as Ronnie Garvin will be the referee while Mr. Fuji & Powers of Pain run down Demolition for their match at the 7/28 Nashville show.
Hillbilly Jim vs. Butler Stevens
Stevens bounces off of Hillbilly, who stays in control. Vince tells us that Hillbilly will be bringing a good luck charm with him to the ring as Jesse refers to it as “Hillbilly Voodoo” then Hillbilly gets the win with a boot to the face (1:33).
Thoughts: They have brought Hillbilly back on TV the past few months but he was really just an opening match guy by this point. Plus, he was really awful in the ring even by late 80’s WWF standards.
We get an ad for SummerSlam with the tagline “Feel the Heat.”
Brother Love Show with guests Ted DiBiase & Virgil. Brother Love puts over DiBiase’s accomplishments but wants to know about his greatest accomplishment. DiBiase says he has accomplished everything he has ever set out to accomplish such as buying the WWF World Heavyweight Championship and the Million Dollar Belt. DiBiase is most recent accomplishment is the most satisfying of all as anyone who crosses him or tries to take his money, like Jake Roberts, will end up in the hospital as DiBiase brags about putting Jake out of wrestling for good. Another solid promo by DiBiase who needs something to do after injuring Jake. He did end up getting a feud with Dusty Rhodes until Jake came back.
Sonny Rogers vs. “Ravishing” Rick Rude w/ Bobby Heenan
Rude beats on Rogers after going through his pre-match routine and quickly puts him away with the Rude Awakening (0:45). After the match, Rude has a woman come out for the Rude Awakening and closes his eyes but the Ultimate Warrior runs in and starts hammering away. Warrior then hits a press slam and shakes the ropes as Rude rolls outside and retreats with Heenan as Warrior celebrates with the Intercontinental Title belt.
Thoughts: The post-match attack by Warrior really got over with the crowd and was a nice surprise.
Replay of the Dusty Rhodes in a barn vignette.
The Barbarian w/ Mr. Fuji vs. Tom Stark
The Barbarian destroys Stark then rams him into the turnbuckle a few times before getting the win with a flying clothesline (1:46).
Thoughts: The Barbarian was good in the ring but it just never clicked with him as a singles wrestler for whatever reason. Maybe a better manager than Fuji could have helped.
Mooney is in the Event Center. Hogan runs down Savage to hype their match at the 7/28 Nashville show. He then brings out Elizabeth, who will be in his corner for the match, as she will do everything she can to make sure he remains the World Heavyweight Champion.
Final Thoughts: The show was okay this week. Windham returned to the company and we found out what happened to Jake. There was a bit less “No Holds Barred” hype than usual but we did get a music video hyping the film. We also got reminded that SummerSlam will be returning so expect the top matches to be announced for that in the coming weeks.
