Eddie Gilbert

Throughout the Observer Recaps, Eddie Gilbert keeps being brought up, keeps being mentioned like he was a big star, and keeps getting fired. Was he really a draw or did his hype not fizz out by not lasting long enough in one place?
He was a draw in Memphis and Mid-South, no question, but as far as WCW goes, no. However especially for them he was a valuable upper card guy who was a GREAT worker and a great promo who could book, so that’s a valuable tool to have in the toolbox. Plus he was a name guy that people liked who could work either heel or babyface. He wasn’t Jose Bautista, but he was a solid utility player who could hit for power, so to speak. That being said, by the time we’re getting into now, both major promotions considered him more trouble than he was worth, and he was pretty much exiled to the outsiders like Global and then ECW before he finally died in 95. Just think of how self-destructive he must have been for even Paul Heyman to give up on him. He REALLY should have been a much bigger star, and probably would have been had he stuck around in 89, and probably would have ended up in a position of some power like Kevin Sullivan eventually did.
