The Cover Is Better Than The Book

By Scott Keith on December 23, 2016

Hey Scott–

Going through Rumbles past as I prepare for everyone’s favorite January main event (Company Line v. What the Fans Want) and I’m on Royal Rumble 1992. The LOD come out for their tag title match, and they get a very impressive pop. It just makes me think more about your Observer recaps, and how the Road Warriors coming in didn’t mean much for actual business. My 13-year-old self totally believed that LOD were huge box office, but the facts saying otherwise would have blown my mind.

Which leads to my question: What acts (besides LOD) would you have sworn up and down were huge money, only do discover as you got older that they didn’t move the needle that much?

LOD was definitely the main ones, and I also would have sworn that Sting and Warrior were huge drawing main event stars based on how they were presented at the time. The cold hard facts on Sting’s reign in 1990 were really striking for me. Also, it feels like reports of the huge business being done by Hogan v. Earthquake were somewhat exaggerated over time as well.
